I breathed through my mouth for those levels so I couldn't really tell the difference.

Mater chief doesn't breathe though does he? He is half human, half robot, and part alien tech. Hopefully the next Halo adds a Dog like in COD ghosts to track smelly aliens and take down the choppers for you because you can't run as fast.

Nice list. A very deserved winner. Pep reversing his order proved costly to poor old Mass Effect.

I don't understand.. I gave Mass Effect 3 10 pts.. yet it only shows as having 6 in there?
Re: Game of the Generation
Yeah I done goofed, must have missed your edit. Fixing it now...
Re: Game of the Generation
Fixed. Well that was a bit of excitement at the end. Poor old Mass Effect can't catch a break.

Re: Game of the Generation
Way predictable Top 5 even without seeing everyone's votes.
Surprised on a few of them, Gears 1 got 13pts *snigger* yet only 2 people voted on Demon's Souls.
Also only 2 people liked Blur enough to vote for it. (Better than Mario Kart!)
Halo 3 was the 360s highest ranked exclusive, Journey was the next highest ranked exclusive.
Seems like horses were a popular theme this generation.

Re: Game of the Generation
Demon's Souls is exclusive to sony. This is xbox land. There is no way it would rate high.
Also you won't see happy games getting rated up there like Mario because people here are depressed nerds obsessed with power who want to chainsaw people in half rather than butt stomp them. People have beomce uber serious. A non-serious game is never going to be called GOTG.
It's also why mall security is discriminating against people who dress up as vieogame characters since videogames are so violent. (could be potential school shooters amongst them, you are the guys who laugh at running over hookers and spraying poo on people's property in saint's row. Can't be too careful if you enact that fantasy in real life)

Re: Game of the Generation
To find out why this place is mostly a xbox fan site and why demon souls isn't GOTG.
To be GOTG you have to be appealing to the tech demo crowd.
If a game with good graphics like gears gets more attention than say mario kart, despite mario kart being superior as a game, it is because the people voting are into darker titles that involve killing stuff and are serious.
It would be like comparing legacy of kain (dark violent and serious) with zelda LTTP and saying zelda isn't as good because it's cartoony and doesn't have good voice acting or serious story behind it and it looks like it's for kids.
Sure it's more appealing to general audience and has no blood, no gore, and lack voice acting, than vampire-themed clone of zelda, but zelda is still a better game. But that doesn't matter if you like the graphics style of the other game more.
People on here keep harping on about how pc is superior in tech to console, but then why does diablo 3 suck compared to ugly console version?
If this place was more balanced, you might see games like Demon Souls get up there. But From software are not the best at graphics. Gears 1 looks better. Thus Gears 1 gets votes.
It reminds me of how people used to compare platformers in the 16 bit days. You had these nice looking games like Earthworm Jim with great animation, and they look nice but were they really better than mario other than in things like the look of the sprites? Was the gameplay as deep? No. It's just people are so obsessed with looks so they forget that games with plain looking visuals are usually the best titles of a generation because the emphasis is in how it plays as a game not how it looks as a demonstration of a platform's power.
The system wars thing stlll rages on here. It's stupid. But it affects what gets voted as GOTG. And Demon Souls is a classic textbook example of this because it is an exclusive-to-sony title with only-ok graphics and this is mostly a Xbox forum. (for last gen)

Mario Kart is not better than Gears 1. People forget that Gears made the cover shooter popular. Not only was it the best looking game at the time, but it was fresh and fucking fun. It deserves all the plaudits it gets.

Yup. Don't forget its online multiplayer was a blast. I remember playing it over the free weekend then instantly subscribing to live afterwards. And who could forget co-op.

Re: Game of the Generation
Gears was the game that kicked off last gen, I remember how underwhelming a lot of games were before Gears hit.
It brought a jump to visuals we all were waiting for and cover shooters were fresh and it did pioneer a great flowing cover system that's been since copied by many other games. It also was the game that made unreal engine the dominant engine of the generation.
This is why I hope MS do something special with the new next gen Gears and take their time. I only wish cliffy b joined MS instead of making arena based FTP shooters.

Re: Game of the Generation
I had a really hard time making my list because of games like Gears. If I were to vote again for the games of the generation in terms of impact and influence, Gears would certainly be there alongside Wii Sports, Nintendogs, and a whole bunch of other "important" titles that I didn't get into for a variety of reasons. At the end of the day my criteria prioritised the games I personally enjoyed playing the most and that had the biggest impact on me (hence voting for Portal 1 over 2, for example), but even then there were exceptions. I played far, far more of Little Big Planet than I did its sequel, but LBP2 more or less contains everything the first game did, plus more stuff. I wouldn't recommend the original to a new player over the sequel, so it seemed silly to vote for it.
TL;DR: There's no "right way" to define GOTG, but it's a fun exercise all the same.

Re: Game of the Generation
Makes sense. Sonic 2 was vastly superior to the first game in every way, shape, and form, and I sure played it a fuckton more so I'd vote for it over the original if we were doing a GOTG, 16bit edition.

Re: Game of the Generation
In the last ~7 years, I've played more great games than I can remember, and yet I've only played 18 games out of the 87 in the tallied list of votes.
If "traditional" videogames are dying to the F2P monster, then they're going out with a hell of a bang.

Re: Game of the Generation
It had pretty average gameplay though.Madmya wrote:Mario Kart is not better than Gears 1. People forget that Gears made the cover shooter popular. Not only was it the best looking game at the time, but it was fresh and fucking fun. It deserves all the plaudits it gets.
The enemies were kinda repetitive and didn't work together in interesting ways. And they only ever attacked in small groups so it didn't feel epic.
The vehicle section was linear piece of shit unlike halo's nice warthog sections.
The levels felt very scripted.
It went for nice graphics and that was the highlight but it felt like your character's weapons were weak and ineffective. When you hit an enemy in other games you se body language on the target that shows it is having some kind of effect. This game actually felt like melee combat in skyrim lol.
Taking enemies down also felt slow. When you get your little chainsaw thing out it goes into a canned-animation and felt very stiff like you had no freedom where you cut the guy's body.
It was an 8 out of 10 game to me. Marcus Fenix and his buddies also have anatomically incorrect feet and his boots are so chunky. I mean like the incredible Hulk size. And people make fun of Ryu's hobbit feet in SF4.. What about gears? Good game but it wasn't competing with much out at the time so I can understand why people would put it on a top ten because its brown grey and has bald space marines in it which is popular amongst the metallic t-shirt crowd who are depressed about life and want dark themes and stuff. That is the crowd drawn to Xbox and since this is an xbox fansite, it makes sense.

No. They should hire him to do a Conker's Bad Fur day third person cover shooter which is hyper violent aimed at adults.lestat wrote:Gears was the game that kicked off last gen, I remember how underwhelming a lot of games were before Gears hit.

Would love to cut people's limbs off in a realistic looking world with a chainsaw as a mascot. MS need to put colour in the games. You know that bit in Gears 1 where the old man at the gas station tells you not to shoot at the fuel? I think they could make a whole game where you are told not to do things and to beat the game you do those things that piss people off in the game in order to complete missions and progress.

Re: Game of the Generation
I definitely would've added Tomb Raider to my list had I started it earlier. Love it. I wouldn't have kicked Mass Effect though.
