Fuck they dropped the ball BIG TIME by releasing such an inferior console to PS4.

They both dropped the ball - both machines are ridiculously underpowered. In both absolute terms and in comparative. I know I've had this rant before, but the PS360 were top-of-the-line hardware when they came out. Multicore 3.2GHz PPC chips, high-end graphics... about all they skimped on was graphics, but then 512MB was respectable by 2005 standards.

About the only thing the PS4/bone got right in terms of their internals was the number of CPU cores. The CPU clock speed has gone backwards, and the GPUs were subpar at best when they were announced.
Now, I know both companies are/were looking at reducing their hardware and R&D costs from the PS360 generation, but this generation is fucking woeful. AMD must be loving it, but it's a serious blow to diehard gamers.

I'm starting to think that MS's consoles are a bit like their Windows (and Star Trek films): Avoid every other release.

Blame Nintendo and the Wii. Sony and MS figured why waste so much money on advancing tech so much when it's obvious people will pay for under powered consoles.

The more I think about, the more I realise that the folks over at Nintendo truly are geniuses!

They know exactly what they're doing, and that's marketing not a traditional home console confined to a TV, but instead a funky looking tablet that can be used anywhere in the house no matter whether in front of the tv in the family room or laying in bed in the bedroom.

It lets you play Nintendo videogames, functions as a universal touch screen remote control/interactive tv guide for your television/cable TV set top box/DVR, lets you stream & watch from a collection of thousands of movies & tv shows, watch YouTube videos & browse the internet, videochat with friends & family, etc.......all on a tablet, that also happens to be a home console.

It's basically an Ipad/Nintendo Console hybrid! It's going to sell like hotcakes!

Games Ranch yet again behind the ball in figuring out what's going on. This is going to be just as wildly successful as the Wii, if not more so (especially considering pre-orders across the United States for the Wii U have practically sold out nationwide).

Yeah, the Xbox One has too many features that simply don't make sense outside of America, and it was entirely marketed to Americans, with everywhere else being an afterthought. I mean, really, watching live TV on a console that's plugged into a TV? Does anywhere outside of North America even approach the prevalence of STBs that they do?

It really just furthers my argument that they should make a model without that HDMI-in port and associated crap. It won't save the machine now, but it'll make it cheaper, at least.

Even if they made a stripped down model, there isn't much reason to buy a xbone over PS4 there unless you are a halo/forza nut. PS4 will get more 3rd party support and the best versions of games which is what matters most to consumers.

Ultimately it's always been about power and 3rd party support. 1st party stuff is gravy but not the sole reason the general wider community buy into the platform.

All MS can do now is limit losses in its strong territories like uk/us etc. They reversed a lot of the damage done but some things like hardware they are stuck with.

Dunno about the whole of Europe last gen but 360 was a Goliath in UK while I was there. Even queues for new releases the 360 would appear to outsell 4-1.

The uk is probably the only country in the EU were xbone has decent market share of around 40%. In general I think xbox has really only performed as a brand with English speaking countries.

Sony seems to appeal to non english speaking cultures better, could be related to being a large consumer electronics company with good history, people feel more secure with the sony/playstation brand.

I remember at the time when the original playstation came out, the sony brand was the equivalent of apple. Was probably one of the reasons they were able to out market nintendo/sega, panasonic/nec were never able to do it and they tried.

Hopefully they fully utilise the Vita as a replacement for the Wii U pad but knowing MS and their stance on parity with multi console games this won't happen (and I'm not saying that because of recent jabs about resolution, this goes back to 360/PS3 era).
