I came from playing fighters megamix and stuff like that, SC blew my fucking mind!
And sonic adventure made me flip, I first saw screenshots in sega saturn magazine and thought it must be CG or something... the step up from the sonic jam hub world to sonic adventure was huuuuge.

I don't think any other gen made the same impact for me, dreamcast had me so excited, add selectable 60hz mode, VGA, VMUs etc :D
This.
I hadn't even heard of Soul Calibur, hadn't planned on getting a fighter, wasn't really phased about the genre, and preordered it purely based on the reviews... which is something I never do and still sounds stupid to me. But damn, happy times.

.. After the fustercluck that was the Aussie launch, that is.

Um, yay PS4.

Good to know that all international pre orders for ps4 will now be honoured by amazon and if the dollar stays the way it is I'll save myself $100.

If I didn't have my bonus coming I wouldn't be buying either xbone or PS4 until at least titanfall and destiny arrive (if they are good that is).
Sorry, didn't make it super clear - it didn't impress me when I FIRST saw it, which was on a TV at EB. Which is probably the same for some of the games you saw - you don't see the special touches in a quick demo, but when you get it home it might blow you away.

Sonic Adventure looked okay at first, but when you saw the scene with the whale - fucking wow, mind blown.

I guess back then though, I had a really good PC rig, so going to Dreamcast wasn't a huge step up. This time around I'm still on PS3, so I'm really excited about moving up to PS4.

PS2 launch was shockingly unimpressive, wasn't until MGS2 came out that it really impressed. That said, TTT looked awesome on PAL launch.

I remember at the time we had model 3 in the arcades, PCs had voodoo/tnt cards that pumped out nice proper 3d zbuffered/bilinear filtered graphics. DC was impressive at the time but I remember the VF3 port was still inferior to the model 3 version, if you played PC games you probably wouldn't be blown away with the jump because you already experienced it on PC.

I guess around the time of DC, PC became a gaming/driving force for 3d graphics, before that is was arcade hardware and specialist SGI workstations.

I love on gaf people are freaking out COD:Ghosts on PC is recommending a GTX 780 and 6gb of ram. To be expected PC requirements will jump because of next gen games, although it's the usual unoptimised games being pushed out to try and get you to upgrade when the hardware you have is more than powerful enough to run it, this why consoles are attractive for most people.

If you have a pc, you should go to ebgames and see if you can trade it in for store credit to buy an upgraded pc to play the next COD. jk

For PC to get the masses attention, it needs to be easy for dumb guys to set up and change things because to non-techy people, time is money. You should not have to know anything about computers to get something done. This is why consoles are great if you just have kids who want to play games. The parents just need basic info to get the game started up.

There is no danger of accidentally deleting system files, wrecking access permissions, causing the machine to download a virus because they clicked a dodgy link, requirements to read walls of text for how to operate a peripheral. Honestly most sensible people have a computer not as a games machine for entertainment purposes, it is most likely used for work, with games as a secondary function. The exception to this rule are those that hang out on game boards all day looking up new information and keeping up to date on news on the latest fixes patches, modifications available. Do you reallly think non-techy people are going to sink in the same amount of time just to get a bloated code to run efficiently? And then there is the need to research the best brands, the best bargain for their price range, and then problems of games having certain compatibility problems for certain brands over others which is probably a secret deal made between the game maker to the hardware maker to deliberately make their games run like shit on their competitor's brands.

People barely have time to finish thier games let alone research stuff. Nerds naturally want to know this stuff because it interests them. But what about non-nerdy gamers who never want to contact the tech support guy because the time is not worth it just to play a game? Once PC becomes easy for these people and hassle-free they will come back but the content has to interest them. Ports of console games might help but there is that problem of MS paying moneyhat to put exclusive DLC on the console and maybe even paying moneyhat to make the pc version run like shit to increase the profits of the console version and encourage people to buy the xbox instead of upgrading pc.

You are dealing with lizard people. The goal is to waste all your energy if it benefits them.

I have a PS4 on preorder but really can't think of anything I want to play on either system. Maybe I should cancel the preorder and wait till something interesting is released.

Even if the launches of other consoles haven't been spectacular there was always usually something that was interesting or would do for a couple months. Maybe AC4 but still.

I'm personally waiting right up to launch time to decide if I will buy one or not. They said they will still be optimizing Drive Club even after the game is released, so they could eventually reach 60fps. I know just recently they added AA to the track.

My EB guy, who I actually don't mind because he's a mature adult has been spruiking for the PS4 since it was announced. Today I spoke to him after seeing the Xbone in action at the EB event and he's completely changed his tune. His personal opinion is that the Xbone will be superior at launch at least. If nothing else, it's interesting that he was so quickly turned around.

You're not missing much. Kotaku got hands-on with Kinect Sports Rivals (developed by Rare) about two weeks ago, and called it a mess!!!

These are the words and terms Kotaku used to describe Kinect Sports Rivals (and Kinect 2.0)....

"Difficult"

"Not responding to movements"

"Trying to get things to work"

"Not being replicated accurately"

"Disconnect between movements"

"A frustrating experience"

"Obvious delay"

"Imprecise"

"Clumsy"

"Rough"

"Hindrance"

And he is ABSOLUTELY right about Kinect, and that after three years.....what games even make use of it, and work properly with the peripheral? :|

Why I'm A Little Bit Worried About Kinect

I am a little bit worried about Kinect.

I’ve just spent 10 minutes being scanned into Kinect Sports Rivals. I’m not sure if it’s working correctly. The only feedback I am being given is from a Microsoft rep to my right. He’s politely giving me instructions when the Kinect (for some reason) stops the scan.

“Take a step forward.”

“Take a step back.”

“Maybe just tilt your head a little bit left.”

After this laborious effort
(which I’m assured will be streamlined before launch) Kinect Sports Rivals goes through the process of translating the information into a virtual representation of me. As it does its calculations I ask myself, ‘if this is difficult with a Microsoft representative guiding me step by step, how difficult will it be for a ten year old in the comfort of his or her own home, or parents who’ve never used a console before?’

Then my avatar pops up. It looks vaguely like me. Vaguely. That’s being generous. The 3DS did a similar job of creating my Mii with a single low-resolution photograph. Was it really worth all that effort?

Now to play Kinect Sports Rivals itself. The rep sets up a two player game. Rock climbing. As someone obsessed with rock climbing (I climb three times a week) I’m super excited. I stand side by side with the Microsoft rep. Immediately I notice there is something wrong. My avatar’s limbs are contorted like some screwed up Lovecraftian marionette, my arms twitch incessantly, clearly not responding to any of my movements.

I think we have a problem here.

Yesterday I spent a fair amount of time with the Xbox One’s new Kinect, and it seemed like a significant chunk of that time was spent trying to get things to work when (two months from the launch of Xbox One) they should simply work.

We were supposed to be forgiving, and we were. After two player Rock Climbing on Kinect Sports Rivals clearly wasn’t working, I was happy to simply try out the single player, despite Microsoft making a big fuss of the fact Kinect allows multiple players on-screen simultaneously. Single player climbing worked more fluidly but, regardless, I never really felt like I was in control of my actions. My movements weren’t being replicated accurately. I felt as though I was fumbling my way to the top with no real in-game feedback; no real sense that Kinect was working as advertised.

‘The lag has been reduced massively’: that’s what we’re constantly being told in conferences, in communications with Microsoft, in interviews, in previews. I have no doubt there are figures to back those statements up, but the disconnect between my movements in real life as replicated on screen is obvious. I feel it, instantly, and it makes playing any game with Kinect a frustrating experience. The next game I play is Wakeboarding, it feels a little better than climbing, but it’s nowhere near responsive enough. The delay is obvious to anyone who plays it, to the point where I can’t imagine anyone investing in it to any great extent.

I find myself asking another question: three years after the release of Kinect, how many video games have really worked well with Kinect? I come up with two names. Two. Dance Central and Child of Eden. In three years. Is it possible that Kinect just isn’t suited for video games?

I’m worried about Kinect. Mere months from launch it feels imprecise, temperamental and clumsy. On more than one occasion its voice recognition, being demonstrated by a Microsoft rep from the US with an American accent, needed three or four repeats of ‘Xbox Home’ to do what a single button press could have done in half a second. If Microsoft reps who have been briefed and have lived with the Xbox One for months are struggling to make everything work seamlessly, what chance does the average punter have?

And make no mistake, a device like Kinect — the device Microsoft is hellbent on shoehorning into our living space — must be seamless if the Xbox One is to capture the mainstream audience Microsoft is lusting after. In short: I have very little confidence in Kinect’s ability to respond quickly, efficiently or consistently and that’s an issue.

But the major issue is this: if you want to purchase an Xbox One, Kinect is being forced upon you. You are paying extra for a device that, two months from launch, feels like a rough, unfinished product. You don’t have a choice and that’s problematic.

When Kinect was first announced — as Project Natal — it felt monumental, as if Microsoft had captured a rare bolt of technological lightning. Don Mattrick looked and talked like a strange time traveller, with a device he had somehow stolen from a distant, brilliant future. Our minds were alive with possibility. Since that day those possibilities have faded and declined, yet Microsoft still seems driven by that squandered potential — by the future that Project Natal promised but couldn’t deliver upon. Stop trying to make fetch happen, it isn’t going to happen.

I want to be positive about Kinect, but it’s difficult. Some aspects work well: facial recognition, although slow, is a great idea. I love that it recognises who is holding which controller and responds accordingly. This is a useful, future facing feature and it’s the result of great innovative thinking. Easier than switching controllers? Maybe not, but it has benefits, particularly in tandem with Xbox One’s customisable homepage. Watching the console adjust preferences on the fly based on who was holding which controller was quite breathtaking. ‘This is what Kinect should be used for,’ I thought.

But that was the 10%. During the remaining 90%, Kinect felt like it was a hindrance, forcing users to swim against the giant leaps Microsoft made with Xbox One’s user friendly UI, which looks fantastic. Sure, I can turn Kinect off — that’s my choice. But I still have to pay for it. I don’t have a choice there.

So, yes. I think there are issues there — not with the Xbox One, with Kinect specifically. Forza Motorsport looks incredible, Ryse seems to have made strides in the combat department and I walked away genuinely blown away by the scale and ambition of Dead Rising 3.

But Kinect? I’m a little bit worried about Kinect.

Speaking of Kinect Sports Rivals....
"We think - well, we hope that this is the sort of game that's still one of the first things that anyone who buys an Xbox One gets even two or three years from now," he continued. "Sort of like Wii Sports and Mario Kart for the Wii.

Simon Woodroffe - Rare

How ADORABLE!

I totally foresee Kinect Sports Rivals selling as well as Wii Sports (82 MILLION COPIES SOLD), and Mario Kart Wii (34 MILLION COPIES SOLD), especially considering the Kinect Sports franchise is far from popular, as the first two games in the franchise have only sold a COMBINED 7.5 million copies...

Thanks for the impressions, they need to move this to melbourne next year I reckon :P I have already pre ordered both consoles, was abit late with the ps4 so may miss out when it comes out, the Xbox 1 I pre ordered it straight after E3 even with all the "restrictions" that MS placed on the console I knew that there was no way in hell they wouldn't reverse their decision due to all the backlash. Both consoles are really lacking any reason to get one or the other at launch, I suck at driving games so forza or Driveclub didn't interest me, knack and killer instinct didn't sway me either. The only game I was honestly looking forward to on the ps4 was killzone, I can't wait to play Infamous second son early next year that looks amazing, Ryse looks flashy but boring (as confirmed by all the impressions I've read and now at the expo) I'm glad that Dead Rising 3 sounds decent though.

Most people would say that the next gen launch is a lack luster line up and I tend to agree, realistically apart from a few games designed (to put it loosely) for the new hardware on both systems ps4 Killzone,Knack,Driveclub Xbox 1 Ryse,Killer Instinct,Dead Rising 3 Most of the games I'll be getting will be Next gen up-ports BF4, cod <-ugh, etc

This time next year we still start seeing some proper next gen games, Halo 5 :run: The Division, Next Rainbow 6 (hopefully) etc

Just finalized my xbone pre order. I'm getting the xbone day one edition with Fifa 14. Forza 5. COD Ghosts. Battlefield 4. Dead Rising 3. NBA 2K14. Plus I will grab an extra controller on the day/midnight launch. I'm going to also grab the killer instinct package with the arcade version. Pretty pumped for it actually!
