You need to change his Avatar description.

Yeah no more impressions til I get the flair.

Cloud it was relatively painless to get going but the variety of unregulated demos and games out there force you to kind of 'juggle' between the main modes of operation for the rift is pretty annoying.

'Direct mode' which is a very ideal way to run things. Your rift is hooked up and waiting, you run the game and put the rift on, it works.

Then there's 'Extended Desktop mode' where it uses your rift as a 'second monitor'. If you put the rift on at this moment, you will see two different parts of your desktop in a painfully bright close up. Then, you load the demo/game (some or even most of them require extended mode) and either flick it to the rift by pressing Shift+Windows key+left or right arrow (actually a cool way to flick programs between displays, even if you aren't using a rift).

Also, you have the option to set the rift as your primary display in extended mode, which causes extended mode demos to launch directly into the rift, but comes with it's own problems (like the utilities, including networking icons and nvidia control panel etc being on the basically unviewable 'primary' display of the rift, and everything you launch tries to open on the rift and you have to flick it back to the second one by pressing Shift+windows+left etc, even if you're just opening a browswer).

Yeah... A lot of fine tuning to do.

Ok no flair but o well!

Here's an update.

Mixed news.

1. Setting your monitor to 75/76hz is essential

Thankfully my monitor with a minor update to a hacked/aftermarket driver can be set to 76hz (maximum 1050p though so lost 30 pixels of height)

This makes all the difference.

Ok so there's the 'wow factor' that hit me when I tried it.

But the slight judder becomes more apparent when you get familiar.

You -need- to have your main display set to 75/76hz otherwise your rift is limited to 60fps and that creates judder.

So, I got the wow factor all over again.

Then....

2. After that second wave of wow factor at the super-silky-smoothness wore off, I'm struck by....

How low resolution it is.

It's just a bit too low res. Can you still have an amazing experience with it? Yes!

But it's just... not quite good enough.

3. Alien Isolation in the rift is the best gaming experience I've ever had. Bar none.

I thought MP battlefield would be reigning champion for a while.

But honestly? An immersive game like Alien Isolation in the rift is like fucking crack it seriously stimulates your brain so hard, it's like you get this huge endorphin rush.

4.

There's a huge market of weird little games out there!

The best thing about the rift are the bizarre little distractions and oddities you can download and look it.

It could very well be THE most psychedelic and novel toy I've ever used. The 'surrealness' of some of the experiences you can have with it are just off the chain.

Oh yeah, I know it goes without saying and we've heard it before, but playing a game called 'Radial G' and some cheap space exploration games on rift really highlighted to me how awesome Elite: Dangerous is going to be in the rift.

Dogfighting and being able to look around your glass roof for your enemy? Dear god.

Thanks for that, dude. I know I can wait for the consumer release. And for Elite, I've ordered this for a different and very inexpensive head tracker. It'll do until proper Oculus.

Hey Cletus can you change itch's tag to 'RiftMaster' please. I think it would be good since he is clearly into the subject matter.

Just an opportunity I saw come up. Do as you please though.

Ticker works. But now I have to question whether you're really ready for a new rank. Only 2500 posts and all.

Uses a gyro to monitor and convey head movements, rather than a webcam and lights on your head (TrackIR). It's home made by a group of tech savvy Elite Dangerous players and as you can read on the site, is offered in varying states - kit form, built and built and housed (50 odd bucks ). I think the only minor issue is you're tethered via usb cable whereas headtracking generally isn't.

In the end it's more like having an analogue stick movement to convey head tracking. I think.

itch....... you seriously need to hold back, at least a bit if you ever want that descriptor changed to the one Cletus agreed on.

Oh and that was waaaaaaaaaaaay before Chaos even noticed anything wasn't happening.
