Don't forget to post your impressions. Check out dreamdeck as well, you can download them from oculus home.

Oculus

Oculus themselves have been good to deal with throughout. Especially when my bank went full retard on me. Still can't believe it arrived yesterday, when I got the email to say it's on it's way I was expecting delivery next week or the week after.

Packaging

Very cool overall. The only issue I had (and Google tells me I'm far from alone!) is the crazy plastic tab in the remote you have to pull out. Turns out the best way is to slide off the back where the battery goes and take it out that way, but that's not documented.

I would have liked all the software (including Lucky's Tale and Eve: Valkyrie) to be on disc instead of a download.

Set-up

It took a couple of attempts to synch the Xbox One controller to my PC, but I guess that's a Microsoft issue. Apart from that it was pretty straight forward. The headset has a USB 3.0 cable and an HDMI cable (it splits near the end so it's only one cable that actually comes out of the headset) and the desktop sensor has a USB 3.0 cable too. Nothing needs its own power supply. Software setup was simple and straight forward. And that goes for both Oculus's own software and also SteamVR which detected my Rift straight away. Steam is better than Oculus Home because ... it's Steam. Oculus Home software takes forever to download. I have FttH and Lucky's Tale is up to 366MB/1.89GB and I started the download this morning :|

GAMES

The only game I've played so far is Project: CARS. And the sense of immersion is everything I was hoping for. More in-depth impressions later

Porn

I am also downloading Oculus Video

Try out Lucky's tale, it's free and surprisingly decent!

How's the SDE?, what settings are you running PCARS?

I think you can run into performance issues when you launch steam VR while playing PCARS (if you bought it off steam). Just launch it from your steam library without opening steamvr.

It's now up to 500MB :|

SDE is noticeable when I first put it on, but it disappears pretty quickly once I start playing. Setting are the defaults GeForce Experience chose for me. They appear to be a mix of Low and Medium with the very occasional High thrown in. At some point I'll mess around with the settings to see how high I can push things, but as it is it is super fast with no jerkiness.

Yeah, I haven't launched SteamVR at the same time, it's always been just via the Steam Libray, then choosing Oculus VR mode.

So I hadn't used my rift for just over a week until this evening. This might sound weird coming from me but I was really okay about the resolution, I thought maybe the oculus sdk had been updated but everything was the same. I was trying out some apps and the oculus dreamdeck and it was fine, it's very useable. I thinking of picking up Adrift. It only took me a week without it to really appreciate it, and SDE doesn't bother me anymore.

Fast paced first person shooter in VR? Don't know how my stomach feels about that.

I'm not sure either but I definitely want to try it!

Reading Masters of Doom, VR has always been John Carmack's dream. No wonder he now works for Oculus :D

Ohh buy the way Edge of Nowhere is pretty damn good use of the Rift. Game is good so far. The immersion and atmosphere are fantastic though.

Not much action in this thread, is that because like with me the shine is wearing off for yoy guys as well. The initial added immersion in most games is fantastic but after a while I start to think, this game could possibly have been just as good (and look better) on a flat screen?

Edge of Nowhere at first I was like wow this is amazing but then after that wears off its just meh it's an OK game.

For racing games it's worth it for sure, but only because of my wheel set up to pair with it, the Rift on its own doesn't make those experinces, where are the wheel without the Rift is still fantastic.

I guess I just want something else that I can play with it where I can say wow this is the future. So far not many games that I have played yet (except racing) have really come close to being able to deliver that.

I guess we are in the post launch lull, just need to be patient.

I've seen a lot of impressions from E3 with the same complaints people have made here, quite a few felt motion sickness, most complained about blur/clarity issues. I feel the tech still has a lot of obstacles to overcome.

Definitely, you have to work around it when designing your games. That's why certain games like Lucky's Tale show off what's possible when you build a game ground up for VR. The good thing is we can only see it getting better in the future.

Yeah for sure I agree with that. However once you are over the novelty of it is Luckys Tale really that good as a VR game wouldn't it be the same game on a flat screen?

Definitely a bit of a post-launch lull I think. Plus I haven't had a lot of time to really tinker with it like I want to.

Lucky's Tale is great. I really enjoy it even though it is a pretty bog-standard platformer, there are parts that make me go wow this is cool and impossible outside of VR.

Valkyrie has even more of a wow factor for me. It makes me feel like a little kid with a big grin on my face. But I have only been playing it in short bursts cos I know it's shallow as fuck. But that's not VRs fault. Looking forward to the big update that was released today.

Project Cars is awesome.

I'm really looking forward to the launch of the touch controllers. I feel that's going to be huge. It feels like so many upcoming games are designed around them and then we'll see some real innovation.

And devs definitely have to design their games around VR to take into account resolutions etc. Stylised graphics are the way to go I think.

The resolution is just too low to use super detailed graphics. You can't make any of it out.
Good review from someone who just got their rift on GAF.

Yep that probably sums it up in a nutshell. You have a PC running games that simply look spectacular on the tv/monitor and then you chuck the Rift on and your going back to last gen graphics almost.

That's a shame. A few tweaks would fix most of the issues though. I'm surprised it shipped with them (FOV and screen resolution). It's to fund the next round, which will have improved resolution. By round three, they should have addressed FOV. Or the other way around.

Yeah you have to start somewhere and to be honest to get something in the marketplace I'm not sure they could have done much different. You up the resolution too much and you risk having to small of a market as your only cataering to the highest of high end PC being able to run the thing. At 4K resolution which is probably where the target needs to be you'd need two GTX1080s to even get much out of it.
