Dirt Rally 2.0

Post by Deef »

Just got this while it's on sale on Steam ($35 for the Season 1 & 2 bundle). Anyone else have it?

I struggled to get up to speed with Dirt Rally 1 before flaking out, but I'm loving 2.0. I can only guess that this time I went in with hardened expectations about the game's difficulty and how to drive... yet I still managed to destroy a car in 7 minutes on a track that should have taken 4 minutes to complete.

The new Australia location has to be hands-down the best in the series; it looks great and is somehow the most diverse and chaotic in any race, while still providing very fast, very fun stages. Tearing down a long gravel hill preparing for the long left at the bottom is white-knuckle stuff. Pretty much anywhere in the game you can hold accelerate for 2 seconds is white-knuckle stuff.

The game isn't as featured-packed as the main arcadey Dirt series (currently up to Dirt 4), and overall the packaging has its flaws; it's now an always-online game, the single player career mode is quite uninteresting, and the daily/weekly/monthly events interface is not excellent. While the challenges and leaderboards are still populated by thousands of racers each day, the direct multiplayer community is close to drought-like. There are still quite a few frequent players, and when I do find opponents the sessions typically go for a few hours, but I've often had to do some waiting.

Having said that, I love racing against others even though I absolutely suck at it and am happy to come second-last. I look forward to getting really in tune with any of the cars.

So overall the packaging is a bit questionable, but the core game is brutal but brilliant.

The first one brutally raped me in the dignity. I'm sure I can keep a car on the road better IRL than in that game, but I'll be damned if it didn't make me question my real life driving abilities.

Saw that, and all of the DLC too I think. Only issue is they haven't unlocked for me despite an email saying they were ready for selection :/

Looks like that DLC is only some cars. Still, interested to hear how you guys go.

One rather unusual tip: The very first time you start the game, don't just suddenly zip through the main menu sections. As in, there are 5 main sections that you switch between using the right & left bumpers; I'm saying move through them slowly/deliberately.

Because there's a brief voiced explanation of each section that only ever plays once. If you zip past it it will never play again.

It's not a big deal but annoyed me enough to want to mention it. The game's structure is quite confusing and those clips might have helped me understand it more. I haven't found a way to get them back.

One less unusual tip: Don't just jump into a RWD and think the game is always that hard. The RWD cars are very, very tough to drive; at first it's easier/possible to find something fun with the FWD and 4WD cars.

Good luck. :)

I still fire up 2010’s Dirt Rally 3 when I fancy a rally fix. Still a smart looking game on PC. Will be interesting to see how far it’s come.

MS needs to bring back the RalliSport Challenge series! Probably the last rally game I’ve played.

Wasn't that made by Dice though before EA bought them? Maybe EA own the IP after the takeover.

Just a fun watch:
The game takes after Dirt Rally 1's apparent development approach of putting all the effort into the driving, and little into its menu design. There are some poor choices scattered around how the game is organised and navigated, really only redeemed by the fact that menus aren't what you're there to play.

That said, enjoying it more as skill improves. I really surprised myself yesterday when I discovered a Rallycross track I had somehow still simply never played. I had somehow just never chosen it, and it still has never appeared in the career mode.

Raced 2 other Aussies over 14 tracks tonight. I usually lost but the one track I won, we all finished within the same 0.5 seconds. :D
