GOG Galaxy 2.0

Post by Peppermint Lounge »

CD Projekt Red bringing a big update to their GOG Galaxy launcher, enabling connection to your other launcher accounts, libraries, friends lists, achievements and hours logged turning it into a customisable multi-platform hub. Pretty much a relaunch of the platform. Fair move as it's GOG's best play to get more people to stay logged in. The client looks slick and they're pushing data privacy and anti spyware hard to cash in on the many malware accusations flung at rival launchers.

I installed this a couple of nights ago. It's easy to connect your accounts and good to have a well designed, single UI to view all games. There are a number of default views including one for all installed games across all stores. Unsurprisingly it brings into focus the quantity of games acquired over the years. And I'm on the lower end of the scale. I've been toying with buying a Humble Bundle subscription due to the insane value but then logic kicks in, or rather the lack of logic behind having truckloads of games delivered I can't possibly hope to get around to.

It's a solid launcher. Games from all my platforms launch well - Steam, Xbox, Epic, Origin, Uplay. All stats from each game including playtime and achievments listed accurately. Have yet to try installing games on other platforms through Galaxy but the function is there. The latest update stacks duplicates which cleans up what was the most untidy aspect of the library.

It’s moved to open beta. Everyone can install it. The latest update lets you see who’s online and what they’re playing on any platform.

This is what the PC has needed for years what with all these different game launchers. It's like Trillion for the 21st century.

Will have to try it.

Does it help with updates? Like at the moment if there's an update for an EA game, I have to open Origin. If it's a Rockstar game I have to open that launcher etc. If I just open GOG 2 will it update everything?

I'm starting to really hate Electron. Maybe Blazor + native webview can kill it some day. Something has to.

That's a great comparison, but Galaxy 2.0 has a much better interface than Trillian ever had.
