Forza 6 Apex for windows 10 announced

Post by lestat »

Last week’s daylong event in San Francisco, which fell outside the drumbeat of major video-gaming trade shows, was officially held to tout games coming this spring for Xbox and Windows.

Notably, all the titles Microsoft featured will have variants available on the PC.

Among them is “Forza Motorsport 6: Apex,” a version of the auto-racing franchise developed by Microsoft-owned Turn 10 Studios. “Apex,” a slimmed down version of its Xbox cousin, will be released free to users of Windows 10 this spring.

Racing games have long been used as showpieces of the amount of visual detail developers could pack into games running on new hardware and software. “Apex” is positioned as an effort to show off the gaming potential of Windows 10.

MS going all in with PC now. Xbox brand relegated to cheap PC kiddy system?

I'd say it's more F2P model. A track or two, a mission or two, and a handful of cars.

It's free, forgot about that, so it's mostly likely what you said. 60fps replays and mirrors! :D

Yes and no. There will be a future for Xbox but more in the sense of a steambox/console hybrid where it will be marketed as a console but in reality it will be based closer to a PC. There was this article on Eurogamer just yesterday which pretty much confirms this:

I like this idea.

It's been tried with Sega and they failed. It should be interesting to see how MS implement hardware updates. Will they be user installable, add on or a hardware revision?

When you look at the console space, I believe we will see more hardware innovation in the console space than we've ever seen. You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible because we have a Universal Windows Application running on top of the Universal Windows Platform that allows us to focus more and more on hardware innovation without invalidating the games that run on that platform.
Interesting.

http://www.polygon.com/2016/3/1/1112166 ... -microsoft" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
In a speech to reporters, he said that the Xbox One could see a future in which it is upgraded, rather than replaced by new consoles. Spencer was talking about how Microsoft has sought to align its Windows 10 and Xbox One development activities under the internal "Universal Windows Platform" while offering backwards compatibility for many Xbox 360 games, now playable on Xbox One. He was addressing the concerns of some Xbox One owners that the exclusives destined for that console are appearing on PC, thus eroding the value of owning a console.

..."When you look at the console space, I believe we will see more hardware innovation in the console space than we've ever seen. “In other [consumer technology] ecosystems you get more continuous innovation in hardware that you rarely see in consoles because consoles lock the hardware and software platforms together at the beginning and they ride the generation out for seven or so,” said Spencer. “We’re allowing ourselves to decouple our software platform from the hardware platform on which it runs.”

What this could mean is that the Xbox One becomes more like a PC, with Microsoft releasing updated versions every year or so with more powerful processors and graphics hardware. And, in theory, because games will be written as UWAs, older titles will remain compatible with the new machines.
PC/Xbox are becoming one and xbox consoles will be like steam machines, I welcome this brave new future. :up:

I'm really not a fan of buying "big" games through the Windows store. You lose a lot of control of the gaming experience with those apps.

With gears you don't have an option, it's exclusive to the W10 store, the only advantage would be cross buy, right now there are issues with fraps apps and mods, it's a more console like walled garden for PC, will be interesting to see how protected and hack free it remains.

Gears is $29 btw, a little cheaper than the bone release.

Back on topic, more details about Forza Apex
Forza Motorsport 6: Apex features trademark Forza innovations such as Drivatar™ opponents and a hand-picked selection of 63 fully functioning Forzavista™-enabled cars, each with working cockpits and full damage.

With bleeding edge race cars like the 2014 Audi #2 Audi Team Joest R18 e-tron quattro, modern masterpieces like the 2017 Ford GT, and classic American Muscle like the 1973 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am SD-455, the cars in Forza Motorsport 6: Apex represent the far-reaching diversity that is part of Forza’s DNA.

Players can race those cars on 20 exciting track configurations across six locations – Brands Hatch, Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Rio de Janeiro, Sebring International Raceway, Top Gear and Yas Marina – including night and wet-weather variants.

http://news.xbox.com/2016/03/01/forza-m ... indows-10/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
New Showcase Tour, Objective System and Spotlight Series
Designed for players who are new to the Forza franchise, Forza Motorsport 6: Apex delivers a curated experience, featuring authentic wheel-to-wheel action, unique automotive content and constant rewards. The career mode is anchored by a new 12-event “Showcase Tour,” which introduces players to fascinating cars and unique automotive match-ups through a series of beautifully crafted and entertaining videos, narrated by automotive celebrities such as James May and Richard Hammond.

Forza Motorsport 6: Apex features a new objective and scoring system, which challenges the player to grow their skill and compare scores with their friends, and each event is a completely unique experience with unending replay value.

In addition, a new “Spotlight Series” will feature new Showcase-style events that will be updated on a regular basis. Whether you’re barreling around rainy Brands Hatch in your all-wheel-drive street weapon of choice or chasing down The Stig from “Top Gear” in cockpit view, there are always new and fun challenges to explore.
Not bad for free, I wonder what's the deal for digital deluxe xbone owners, if we get a "free" upgrade/cars.

Hard to imagine when your gold standard is 30fps, but in the big boy leagues we have Gsync monitors that refresh at 144Hz with GPUs that crank it out.

Played Arkham Knight for the first time in ages. 30fps feels odd, not cinematic at all :/

Yep very much like it, they're going down the free to play path. These games fit that model well I guess since some people may not want all 450 cars and only care for 50 or 100 and purchase what they want to ride/race.

I guess we'll see where it leads, honestly I'd like for them to honor xbone digital owners and transfer their license into a cross buy like they're doing with other future titles. Not really keen on a double dip here since the bone version already runs and looks amazing, PC is just giving the option for higher res and possible wheel/screen setups.
