Sony are in a dominant position right now, I'm already seeing some backlash by users so for them to do this means something spooked them, which means NX is probably going to be pretty powerful.

A little upgrade just too bump a 900p game up to 1080p or push a game from 30fps to 60 fps ain't worth a new console. This gens whole thinking of a good game needs to be 1080p/60fps has been tiresome and a big load of fucken shit

I would be amazed and surprised if the NX is more powerful than this. It's a pretty nice boost, if the boost is any bigger it'd be a PS5 and you'd risk incompatibility with older games since you'd need vastly different hardware for a bigger jump, right?

It's also a chance for MS to get back in the game.

So do we think Microsoft is going to have to show their hand on the Xboner at e3?

There were already FCC doc leaks of a new xbox, but the docs didn't really spell out hardware improvements. I think we'll see an xbox slim and price cut at e3. Sony are going for more power and price increase.

I think MS will see how the market reacts to PS4K first before upgrading their system which I think they had plans to do next year.

In some ways MS doing an upgrade is going to be complicated because of the whole ESRAM thing, ideally they would want to move to HBM2 memory setup to replicate the wide bus of ESRAM and free up the die space for CUs, actually that could be why they're targeting next year, HBM2 isn't ready in volume till next year nor will it be cost effective.

Besides I think this is why MS have changed tune with regard to releasing games on PC, they would have got wind of what sony is doing, but MS have the PC market for those that care for performance. Sony need to stop gamers from leaving console to PC, need to make things attractive to enthusiasts.

I was thinking the same thing about the ESRAM. Is it plausible to just bump up the amount of it?

It uses up too much die space that could be used for compute units and HBM2 is faster and isn't restricted to a small pool. HBM has a wide bus like ESRAM (4096bits) and is low latency like ESRAM.

You could get code that was built around ESRAM to run on HBM2 without to much fuss i think, right now stacks are limited to 4GB, end of year we will see 8GB stacks, so MS really are stuck waiting for this tech to move forward.

I don't think they're trying to faze out the ps4, instead sell ps4 and 4K together, but for how long? There's almost 40mil currently.
This is a big gamble and not all gamers are convinced, including developers.

Pricing will make or break this for me, if they price it at a premium($499/599US), I have no interest, that's money I'd rather spend on my PC, if it's priced the same as current PS4 I'd upgrade, trade up cost isn't that bad.

Yeah, so it's easy to see why developers hate the move. I think it's in a developer's best interest to patch older games to utilise the extra power if possible as it'll get people playing their games again.

Inevitable that the PS4K replaces the PSPoor, but the games will be compatible with both.

As for Microsoft, no-doubt they'll do a me-too thing as they usually do, but they're done for this gen.

Funnily enough this is where Microsoft can do what Sony has decided me this gem- sit back and wait to see what the masses say. If it is received well enough, they can come out with a more powerful upgrade. If it's a failure, they keep supporting the xbone by dropping the price further and show how they won't be segregating the market. Either way it could be a win for Microsoft! This gen isn't won yet...

Or they both lose and it just pushes people further to PC gaming. I fail to see the benefits of being locked into a walled garden, stuck paying more for games just for a right to play a handful of 7/10 exclusives that we might see.

MS have the right approach by releasing their games to windows 10, I already have a system better than PS4K and potentially anything else MS come up with. This is why MS will wait it out, they already have the enthusiast covered with their PC versions, looking to push W10 for gaming more.
