Xbox One .5 rumours played down

Earlier this month head of Xbox Phil Spencer suggested that Microsoft would release upgraded versions of the Xbox One throughout its lifecycle. This was oft interpreted to mean Microsoft was brewing up an "Xbox One and a half", the way Nintendo did with New 3DS or Sony is allegedly doing with the unannounced PS4k. But now it looks like Spencer's statement may have been more hypothetical than literal as he's now saying he doesn't like the idea of a slightly more powerful 8th generation Xbox.
1

"I'm not a big fan of Xbox One and a half," Spencer told GameInformer. "If we're going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers," he said.

"I don't know anything about any of the rumours that are out there, but I can understand other teams' motivations to do that. For us, our box is doing well. It performs, it's reliable, the servers are doing well. If we're going to go forward with anything, like I said, I want it to be a really substantial change for people - an upgrade."

The fact that he calls this seemingly hypothetical machine an "upgrade" means that there still could be a more powerful current-gen Xbox on the way and he's simply preemptively trying to big it up as he knows the idea of spending lots on an "elite" version of something you already plopped down a few hundred quid on is a bitter pill to swallow. In other words, he doesn't flat out deny it. But he does suggest that it won't be an iterative update, should it happen at all.

Another take is that there is no "Xbox One and a half" and Spencer's previous quote - "You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible" - is merely a reference to minor, unadvertised tweaks, just as the Xbox 360 quietly had its innards altered to run cooler and quieter after its early versions were notorious for going on the fritz (or at least sounding like they were going to explode).

The answer may lie somewhere in the middle, where Microsoft is still tinkering with the idea. Maybe it's waiting to see how such a move affects PlayStation, whom we're pretty sure is making a more powerful PS4 SKU.

We've requested further clarification from Microsoft on this and will update should the company respond.
I wish they would just admit that they want to make it upgradeable like a pc.

Call it xbox 720 so it doesn't sound like XB One turbo and more like a sequel to Xbox in general.

Kill the One. It's not meant for pure gaming and you tried to push tv too much. It needs to be relaunched and this time without the always online thing which is what hurt MS image in the gaming space and gave Sony the automatic win.

When NX and PS4.5 comes out, MS is doomed. People will trade in their One for a PS4.5 after getting sick of 900P as standard.

Tomb Raider exclusivity wasn't enough to get people to choose a Bone. It's time we shortened each gen to about 4 years so game developers don't milk the system with sequels that look the same as previous games, and instead just make one really big game that is worth paying full price for. Less overall number of games on the shelves but with smoother and better graphics every 5 years. This will help the console platforms catch up to pc.
Less competition on the shelves between games (because there is less of them but each one feels fresh) means more profit on each game sale. Look at what happened to assassin's creed. Franchise fatigue.

Wii U was a failure. And so was the One. It's time to face facts. They fucked up. Nintendo fucked up by not advertising what the Wii U actually was. And MS fucked up by making us go online so the NSA can easily datamine our console for information about people just like the evil Spectre organisation in the latest James Bond film and tread on the rights of the free people. One is MS's version of Sony Vita. It's probably better as indie game platform now like Vita.

What consoles need to be is abosorb all the strengths of PC game platforms but absorb none of its weaknesses like viruses, poor security, bad stability, and cheating online and clunky interfaces. Nobody uses pc for gaming anymore because it's better to play games on a couch. So if console can ditch some of the limits of console but take the good parts about pc platforms we will get the best of both worlds. Don't restrict us by giving console gaming all the bad things about pc gaming, which is what I suspect MS will try to do. You will only shoot yourself in the foot. Nobody wants "always online" gaming. You hear me you retards?

When we buy a game we also want freedom to sell it on classifieds and get some money out of it to pay for other things if its an unwanted present. Digital shops don't let you change your mind or sell your digital copies to others (for obvious reasons because it competes with new copies).
So attempts to limit our freedom there aren't going to win the public. Be like Sony and let us have existing freedom. Screw up this time and console gaming is doomed. Which might not be a bad thing perhaps Sega will make a comeback with a dreamcast 2 after MS quit hardware and just make software. MS used to be associated with hardcore game brand but they betrayed their own fans. The punishment for this is Sony kicking their butts.

Other than a few tinfoil hat comments that's a reasonably well articulated commentary. You remember your meds this morning?

They wont call it xbox 1.5, it will be called Xbox Next and be a big jump in performance to justify its existence.

Yes if it's an "upgrade" it needs to feel like it graphically but also be so in the naming of it as we all learned when nintendo made the "Wii U" sound too similar to "Wii". They are getting beaten on Digital Foundry and this is ruining MS reputation as the "hardcore" brand that got them respect during the xbox360 era of gaming which I still enjoy. (playing back catalogue of games still)

Uniting with tv, music, movies is not a problem. But highlighting this stuff as the REASON to own and buy a game console is the wrong approach. These are things we automatically expect, but not selling points. The selling points are the unique content that is on the game console which is superior to whatever else the competition makes. If the competition makes something that is the same as what you do, and is CHEAPER, you lost your edge.

you need to stay ahead of the competition to stay afloat. The tech nerds look up stats about the system on the internet and MS failed to understand that was what killed them this gen. Hopefully they learn to put hardcore gamers first then when prices come down later, they can then introduce casuals to those other things like non-game functions and gimmicks as a selling point to families who are looking for all-in-one entertainment box.

It's just the order they did things that caused the confusion. A killer app is not the ability to combine tv and games. It's the game demo of what the console can do that the older console couldn't do. The first few years of a console gen isn't about high userbase but explaining the quality of the console more. Then as it ages, you highlight the value it provides and the big library of already-made titles which a late adopter is more interested in hearing about as the graphics are not at the bleeding edge (for console) anymore. I think when it comes to handhelds it might be the opposite because the Vita was more advanced but not practical as the fold up design of the 3DS which is easy to carry.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get bi-yearly upgrades. Most of us pay more for phones every two years.

Xbox as a service is already becoming a thing. Wait til sony embarrass themselves with a ps4k bluray player update then strike with new hardware and cross gen/PC compatibility pretty much doing what gaben and steam couldn't.
