Epic Games Store (now with free games!!)

Post by lestat »

Store Wars are upon us folks!

https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/blog ... ames-store" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
For the past five years, we've been building tools enabling Epic to bring our games directly to players. We built the Epic Games launcher on PC and Mac featuring Fortnite and Unreal Engine; we built a worldwide digital commerce ecosystem supporting dozens of payment methods; and we gained great economies of scale thanks to Fortnite's growth.

As developers ourselves, we wanted two things: a store with fair economics, and a direct relationship with players. And we've heard that many of you want this too!

Soon we'll launch the Epic Games store, and begin a long journey to advance the cause of all developers. The store will launch with a hand-curated set of games on PC and Mac, then it will open up more broadly to other games and to Android and other open platforms throughout 2019.

The Epic Games store will operate on the following principles:

All Developers Earn 88%

Developers receive 88% of revenue. There are no tiers or thresholds. Epic takes 12%. And if you’re using Unreal Engine, Epic will cover the 5% engine royalty for sales on the Epic Games store, out of Epic’s 12%.

Have a Direct Relationship With Players

People who buy your games automatically subscribe to your newsfeed so you can reach them with game updates and news about upcoming releases. The newsfeed is front-and-center. You’ll also be able to reach your players through email, if they choose to share it.

Connect with Creators

YouTube content creators, Twitch streamers, bloggers, and others are at the leading edge of game discovery. The 10,000-strong Epic Games Support-A-Creator program helps you reach creators, so they can help you reach players. If you opt to participate, creators who refer players to buy your game will receive a share of the revenue that you set (tracked by code or affiliate marketing link). To jumpstart the creator economy, Epic will cover the first 5% of creator revenue-sharing for the first 24 months.

Developers Control Their Game Pages

As a developer, you control your game page and your newsfeed. There will be no store-placed ads or cross-marketing of competing games on your page, and no paid ads in search results.

All Engines Are Welcome

The Epic Games store is open to games built with any engine, and the first releases span Unreal, Unity and internal engines.

When You Succeed, We Succeed

We’ve built this store and its economic model so that Epic’s interests are aligned with your interests. Because of the high volume of Fortnite transactions, we can process store payments, serve bandwidth, and support customers very efficiently. From Epic’s 12% store fee, we’ll have a profitable business we’ll grow and reinvest in for years to come!
From https://variety.com/2018/gaming/news/ep ... 203079344/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
“We’re starting small, with a hand-picked set of games at launch,” he said. “We plan to grow throughout early 2019 and open the store up more widely later on. We’ll have an approval process for new developers to go through to release a title. It will mostly focus on the technical side of things and general quality. Except for adult-only content, we don’t plan to curate based on developers’ creative or artistic expression.

“Epic will manually curate the Epic Games storefront rather than relying on algorithms or paid ads. We believe the ultimate vector for players to discover new games will not be our storefront but creators. Viewership of creator channels has greatly outgrown any storefront.”
I've noticed the trend of big AAA publishers leaving steam lately, it will be interesting to see how Epic's own store pans out, they still have the biggest online game Fortnite so there are lots of eyeballs loading up that epic launcher every month.

I don't envy you PC Peasants having all these stupid apps to run different stores for different games.

Can't fault companies wanting to control their own digital distribution. But yeah, multiple launchers are a pain.

But the competition is still good.

It reminds me of the old web browser wars. At some point the best ones will win and people will stick to the ones they like the most and not change once they all copy each other to a point where the differences are too tiny for the users to bother caring enough to jump off the fave one.

All games on pc are technically free anyway. As if PC gamers have anything to whine about. Consoles are still treated as kids machines and you can't get nude mods for chun li in street fighter. But you can browse for porn on the web browser. The game developers and manufacturers need to adapt to changing attitudes to be in line with today. There should not be that much distinction between pc and console. Sony is never going to be seen as a family friendly brand. That's nintendo;s job.
They are falling for the same trap microsoft went down when they mad their dashboard more like wii one.

Epic is just taking advantage of the stagnation of the lazy company that has gotten sloppy over time. All that needs to happen now is for them to merge with pornhub to absorb tit streamers revenue, buy nintendo so they can release the stolen roms that nintendo illegally took from pirates and they win. Eventually they buy valve and force them to make half life 3. Then the world ends as the robots replace humans and nobody has any money to buy skins anymore because they have no job. (unless you become a youtube influencer)

Subnautica is a pretty awesome game to offer for free. They'll get a bunch of people over for that alone.

I knew steam was doomed. IT was only a matter of time.

The only thing to save it: "Half Life 3 announced. Will be free on steam exclusively"

Been playing Ashen, blown away at how amazing this game is. They capture the great tense feel and combat of dark souls with an interesting beautiful art style. It's available free for gamepass players on OneX, runs native 4k/30fps, Epic game store exclusive right now. This game was announced as Play Anywhere so I believe it's still coming to the Microsoft store soon.

The game also has 2 player co-op, you can play offline with an AI companion or a friend, it has open world exploration where you have more freedom than the rigid path based dark souls. Really impressed, this game just like came out of nowhere. :o

It looks like Epic want to leverage their store/launcher infrastructure to enable any unreal engine licensee to use cross play. This is great news for gamers imo.

https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/blog ... ce=twitter" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Successfully launching and operating a live, online game requires a suite of services that go far beyond the functionality of a traditional game engine. These services are expensive to build, test and harden in real-world conditions, but once operational, are relatively inexpensive to scale to more games and more users.

At Epic, our goal is to help game developers succeed. Throughout 2019, we’ll be launching a large set of cross-platform game services originally built for Fortnite, and battle-tested with 200,000,000 players across 7 platforms. These services will be free for all developers, and will be open to all engines, all platforms, and all stores. As a developer, you’re free to choose mix-and-match solutions from Epic and others as you wish.

All services will be operated in a privacy-friendly, GDPR-compliant manner.

Well they even call it the Carlton, so they've clearly ripped off his likeness. Epic are making profits off his work and celebrity. He probably has good grounds for royalties.

Alfonso may lose the battle since he himself has said he's in the process of copywriting the dance. If it wasn't copywriten before then Epic have technically done no wrong whether they call it the Carlton or not, although the name of the dance could send some money Alfonsos way.

Playing Subnautica randomly on PS4 instead, while it has good reviews it has at least 2 surprising flaws:

- it's a sandbox game released in 2018 and it does not have autosave. None whatsoever, not even when you exit. The only game you'll ever load is a game you paused and manually saved.

We discovered this after about 5 hours of playing when the game f***ing crashed.

- the framerate switches from fine and stable to complete cardiac arrest many, many times when you enter or exit the water. I'm talking huge stalls, sometimes approaching a full second of the screen being frozen in some watery motion blurred state. It's so heavy I am surprised this made release. I will acknowledge that this is, fortunately, almost never able to bother your game; I would definitely sound a lot harsher (and it deserves it) if it were. As it is it's just a little unbelievable and if I were the dev I'd be embarrassed.

But I'd be more embarrassed about the missing autosave. I mean, what. the. f***.

There are also a couple of UI oddities that probably aren't an issue on PC.

Having said all that, it seems pretty good so far.

Sony's domination is continuing...

Also Hollow Knight is finally on the ps4. :up: Good news for console peasants. The second class citizen is catching up to the master race. Soon mouse and keyboards will be packed in as standard for next gen consoles to play text adventures as the game industry collapses and triple A companies die off due to loot box crap and everyone is on tight budget. (even capcom is resorting to placing ads inside the games now. Only a matter of time before capcom pro tour tatoos appear on the monsters in monster hunter if you want to grind quicker. lol /half joking

I remember watching an old worthabuy review of Subnautica and in it he said something about the pc version even being delayed because they made ports to console which slowed them down a bit. (that was a while ago) So it shows the shift in attitude by developers toward the peasant race. PC will never die off but neither is console. The mobile gamers are just bringing their shit (loot box gambling nonsense) into the console space which is a threat to game design. For all the complaining about the cost of Monster Boy (roughly the retail price of a portable 3DS title) I would rather be bank-account/wallet-raped upfront than in a sneaky way over a long period of time because a developer has decided it wants to stretch the life of game to go on forever by making ninja edits to the code so that it no longer resembles what you bought on day 1 and has transformed into something else that resembles a shop. This is a big problem that must be dealt with somehow. It's caused me to turn to retro gaming. (going to buy megaman X legacy collecton 1+2 and megaman legacy 1+2 to relive old times.)

Lestat is a fan of Games-as-a-service but it's going to be done away with imo. There is only so much abuse the hardcore gamer will take before they quit the hobby. I predict it won't collapse but it will contract judging by what companies like blizzard are doing (paying people to leave). This is a sign that the focus is going to be the mobile crowd. Which is not good for us who like deep involving games. (although having said that it might just mean projects are cancelled but then get renamed under different names under different companies. eg megaman title gets cancelled on 3DS which births mighty number 9 as spiritual sucessor, and then capcom responds with Megaman 11; doing a 180 turn on their decision to kill off the series)

Subnautica sounds like a great game but I heard it lacks guns and nice weapons. Is this still true? I know it's a survival game but a game where you lack weapons kind of scares the shit out of me. (might explain alien isolation sales being poor too: everyone loves powerful weapons) I heard the dev mention on twitter that he is antigun because there is "too much gun violence in the world already" or some shit. Videogames do not cause real world violence FFS. Otherwise kids would have killed their teachers at school from all the fortnight hours they logged online instead of finishing their homework.
