Overwatch

As most of you guys know, I'm completely FPS-retarded.
My FPS history is pretty much Halo, Destiny, and a little bit of CoD, and completely sucking at online multi in all of them.

So the beta weekend for Overwatch was a couple of months ago, and we played it, and enjoyed it a lot. I just sortof thought to myself "Sure, that was fun, but I can take it or leave it."
But in the back of my mind, there was a thought gnawing away at me that I wanted to play this more, to spend more time on it and learn each of the characters.

My youngest son bought it on PC, and he's happy for me to play it, but it's tied to his Battlenet account, and ehhh, KBAM just isn't my thing, and controller on PC is a horrible disadvantage.
So I traded a bunch of games, got some Playstation store credit and got the digital PS4 version.

The game is excellent, and mad fun.
That damn Blizzard polish. The character design is what keeps pulling me back in. They are all so well designed and unique. They all have their little quips and catchphrases, if you play Hearthstone, you'll know what I'm talking about. The sound design is amazing aswell - There is an excellent presentation about it from GDC on youtube.
The maps are unique, and learning to exploit them to your advantage is cool.

So it's a team based character shooter, with four main 'types'. Offense, Defense, Tank and Support. I've managed to find characters in each class that I enjoy playing and can be effective and useful to my teams.
I main Mercy (the main healer in the game). Reading up on her, she is considered top tier, and using her effectively definitely swings games in your favor, and can be very satisfying.
My main tank is D-Va, a K-pop star in a mech.
My main offense is Phara (Rocket Launcher and JetPack), and my main defense is Junkrat, an ocker Aussie explosives guy. They both work for me as I can just spam their massive damage attacks and splash damage to rack up kills. No need to be precise - I'm pretty bad with the sniper characters.
Junkrat is just amazing. It's cool spamming "G'day Cobber!" all the time.
Watch this video to be amazed at Blizzards amazing character design.
I'm not bad with Soldier76, Roadhog and Zenyatta too.

Unbelievably for an FPS, the game is fun to watch other people playing and you learn things while watching also.
The game has so much depth. I highly recommended it.
The rumors say Overwatch is the PVP parts of Titan that got stitched together and released as it's own thing. My mind boggles at what Titan could have been...

Is there anyone else on the Ranch even playing it?
What's the world coming to? Me, pimping a FPS game? The apocalypse is here.

I've been considering buying it but I haven't really enjoyed FPS in the past. I like Halo but actual Death Match stuff? Not so much. Closest I have gotten to enjoying online stuff has been playing the multiplayer in Mass Effect 3 because it was co-op against AI.
I will say that I love the look of Overwatch though. And one my my best clients is obsessed with it :)

Roadhog is my fav. I love being a tank and I like his chain grab.

I'm in love with Mei but that might be a Velma thing...

Playing on PC elf? I have it too but haven't played much because I haven't had time. Loved TF2 to death.

I really like what I've seen of it, but like Elf I'm not a huge PvP nor FPS fan. Destiny: Rise of Iron will be out before I'd have time to really get into it, and one shooter at a time is already one more than I usually play. It's polished as all hell though, amazing that Blizzard have managed to balance things so well with that amount of characters and variety of play styles.

Fuckin' RIP Battleborn, we barely knew ye.

Everytime I see this game I now think of the porn of tracer on pornhub. It needs to be a Dungeon crawl game like Hired Guns on the amiga 500 not a stupid arena hero shooter.. and the anime-inspired charakter in mech remind me of princess robot bubblegum.

Currently heavily addicted to this game. Blizzard once again is turning me into a sleep deprived zombie for weeks on end.

I'm going to give this a try at some stage, watching people play it on twitch has me a little concerned as I saw a lot of people crowding around a shield... Shields in a shooter is shit, I know they need to think up different perks but that's almost as shit as halo reach's shield lock thing.

I also fear halo 5 has ruined shooters for me, the traversal in hat game is sublime!

It's not really a shooter. It's a game with super heroes with guns and unusual powers like people in fighting games. A shooter is Earth Defense Force. If only blizzard made a starcraft shooter that plays like an EDF game. That'd be awesome. They aren't skilled enough as coders to make big battlefield with hundreds of enemies so they stick to this aweful Doom-clone stuff but with saturday morning cartoon characters instead of go the starship troopers route.
Such a waste of potential. Mindless unbalanced arena shooters are old. Make something big like the serious sam games but great graphics.
And don't you dare use anime characters for the next diablo game you retards. Keep it dark like hentai porno drawn by americans who grew up reading spawn and watching horror flicks. Shadows fucking everywhere and fog to hide the map so you can't see until you go around the corner to see. Leave that colourful shit for crappy mmo gamers.

I bought overwatch a month or so ago when I realised that's where a large chunk of the fps community spends their time.

I love highly competitive online games that are super popular (the thrill of being the best in a very large player pool) and overwatch hasn't quite grabbed me the way I thought it would. I'm too spoiled for choice at the moment and it has a bunch of new shit to learn I dont have room for atm. I will say it is an extremely well presented and streamlined experience. A new player is told everything they need to know and objectives are concise and clear. This is how a teamplay FPS game should be.

Who amongst you play this game? Who should I be using as a quake fan? I have been using that character with a jetpack and rocket launcher. I havent yet found a character that forfills my needs; agility, damage output, weapons ala quake holy trinity (rocket, rail, lightening). Another character I have used is that mech with the chaingun turret and self healing ability. He's not quake-like but seems pretty beast as you can stay alive forever and sustain yourself.

Me and Reka play a fair bit on XB1. I also have it on PS4 tho.

I don't know Quake very well, but I do know Quake players at work that gravitate towards Pharah (the jetpack/rocket launcher character you refer to).

In the right situation, Bastion (the mech chaingun turret guy) can be very strong, but against quality and knowledgeable opponents, he can be very fragile. Very situational character. When tanking against him, I always prioritize him first. The only time I really pick him is defending on the long last payload run on Route66.

Based on your criteria, I'd stick to Soldier76 first.

For some reason I got this game for free on xbox one. I was claiming my free games with xbox live and noticed Overwatch was on sale for the week, then after claiming the games I saw Overwatch say it was "owned" so I hastily installed. Odd.

I have similar feelings with Boomy. Seems a great game, but with every character being so varied it feels like I need to devote a large chunk of time just to be competitive which I'm not interested in.

I agree with what you guys have said. I've skirted around the steep learning curve of mastering a crapload of characters by focussing on one character of each type (offense, defense, support and healer).

I can play all of the characters, but I play those four a lot better than all of the others.

Give me Zenyatta any day - he suits my play style and I'm very comfortable with him. Unfortunately team composition or teammate skill levels sometimes create situations where I'll change to other characters because it's just not working. It's taken me a long time to realise that playing your 'best' characters isn't always the right choice - oftentimes complimenting the rest of the team or countering the other team is the better approach.
