Redout (PC tomorrow, consoles early 2017)

Post by jizzlobber »

This wipeout/F-Zero inspired futuristic racer will be available on PC in about 7 hours, I hadn't heard of it but it looks pretty good.
it seems to lack weapons however, so that sucks a bit of arse.

here's a vid from gamescom... what do you think?

It looks stunning.. however.. it kinda reminds me of the sections from Sonic Adventure where you went really really fast and had no real control on what happened.. and you'd grind your way to the end of the section regardless.

I've popped it in my wish list though as I do like the look of it.

If it doesn't have the "difficult" tag on steam I wont even consider it an option tbh.

really cool game, handling is similar to wipeout but you don't really have air brakes, you use the left analogue stick to "strafe" which seems to help around tighter corners and applying the brake is needed is needed for sharp corners... releasing the accelerator can help to turn but it takes to long to get back to top speed unless you have some energy for boost.

Visuals as in the video above obviously, old school low poly look gives is a slight virtua racing look about it but which is pretty cool and makes spotting corners easier than if it were highly detailed, pretty basic looking but the lighting, particles and silky framerate help (up to 200fps according to the advanced menu!).

I'm finding the AI is catchable if you crash, people will complain about the rubber banding but more would complain if a small mistake would ruin your race.
Also the fastest AI will probably always be tailing you when you're doing well... I did read there's more rubber banding in the first 4 events then the AI behaviour changes after that, i'll see.

i'm really liking it, would be insane with weapons though.
Fuck I hope they add weapons at some stage.

Definitely looks interesting.

Also popped into mind was another F Zero style game that is on kickstarter at the moment:

It's definitely stunning and I really like the music direction. I can actually see myself playing this a lot more.. Some weapons indeed would make it more interesting though I must agree.

This is from me playing a few races using the keyboard too. I couldn't get it to identify my PS4 controller which was a bit disappointing. Hopefully that support will be added in the coming days.

Man, must be tough tapping keys mate.
You need to get one of the new Xbox one controllers for your PC, has Bluetooth for easy connectivity.

I'm at class II now, things just got faster :)

I'm finding the AI is shunting me which can spin me around, kind of frustrating as you don't see it coming most times... A heavier cleft would help I guess.

It is!
I asked the developers directly and they said they are working on PS4 controller support.. I may cave and buy the Xbone controller anyway.
The developers have already responded and have said they are working on PS4 controller support.
I also hinted some weapons play would make it even better and they said that it isn't on the agenda at this stage as they are more focused on making it the best antigrav racer of all time. That being said.. That being said, they are definitely considering some options.

Bummer about the weapons, was hoping it would be on the agenda... I understand though.
It is a common request from what I've seen though, so hopefully it'll be looked at.

You can drain energy from other racers and shit, but I don't think that has much of an impact on the race.

Will definitely get this, it'll be nice to have a console style racer to kick back with on the tele. Wipeout could and should be a bigger franchise IMO.

I was interested until I heard the controls were more like Wipeout... Pass... I must be the only person in the world who really hates the Wipeout control scheme. Give me F-Zero any day.

The Extreme Gravity Rage video that Ben linked looks more up my alley. F-Zero GX is still my favourite racing game.

There appears to be 3 different control schemes you can use. REDOUT, Classic and Arcade. I've only used the REDOUT one so far and it plays nicely.. I haven't really unlocked anything good so far.. just building up money at present.

Many are saying this game is too hard, I say get fucking good!

some things to know-

the corners are coloured, green is a soft corner, yellow (I think) is medium and red is tight.
you see the colours on the walls with the arrows.
only brake for red corners, stear and strafe everything else.

boost out of corners wherever possible, especially if you hit a wall.

I'm usually near the front runner, getting 1st a lot but not by much... i'm enjoying the challenge.
i'm not amazing either, so these people wanting the AI nerfed need to harden the fuck up, I think the devs have it right and I hope they leave it as is.

I caved and bought a xbox controller.. a very worthwhile $39.
I am enjoying that I am not winning straight away.
I did read people saying that the game is too hard and one person in particular said that because of this the game was unplayable. What a cocktrumpet.

Yup, what a puss.
Someone wrote it off because it's full of blind corners, I'm yet to find a single corner I can't see coming, if I fuck up its always my bad driving.

ive just unlocked class 3, will try that tonight... Gonna be lightning fast!!

It's a decent challenge, it's only too hard if you've never played it and don't have the patience to learn the controls

It's hard but the thing is.. if it's too easy.. where is the satisfaction. Can't see corners coming? That's when you learn the fucking track and legitimately get good at it. I'm learning the tracks and getting better. I'm still not great. Hoping to put some proper time into it this weekend.

Yes that was my point. If its not hard, its not wipeout and I'm not interested.
