Announced at MechCon 2016, Piranha Games is taking MechWarrior back to its singleplayer roots with MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. Slated for a 2018 release, Piranha Games president Russ Bullock took the stage to reveal the first footage of MechWarrior 5, which is being developed using Unreal Engine 4. You can watch that demo in the video above and head over to MW5mercs.com for more info.

Saw this in my Facebook feed yesterday, pumped. Still have great memories of the original Mechwarrior on the Epson x286.

new MVC, Wipeout and Mechwarrior. Awesome news weekend. I hope this is going to be better than the team deathmatch pay to win snoozefest that MW online turned out to be.

I like the old 1980s look to the robots. They don't like to make robots look rugged and beat up anymore these days.

Everything has to look like a shiny sports car. Military vehicles are never bright and shiny like you see in the anime robot/mech shows. My wish is that someone can create a cross between Minecraft (where robots go mining and haul the blocks which are used for base building, ....and.. open world FPS game like fallout where the world is fucked up and you can explore a massive post apoc world and scavenge for loot, and fight in a mad max style environment where the robots isn't just a weapon to destroy stuff but is used to protect you from various environmental hazards. (ie think of the suits in metroid which protect you so you can explore more dangerous environments thanks to the protection the suit gives)

This way you actually feel vulnerable despite being in the robot because it can wear out, fall apart over time if you don't constantly find the upgrades you need to survive. There is no support from a squad, it's just one guy walking around and trying to survive like in minecraft games and the monsters/gangs/looters are there to harass you until you get strong enough to outclass them. (survival game mixed with mech combat, and base building to put up defense against irradiated monsters, gangs, and rival mercenaries)

If they make it too simmy it will probably scare away the casuals.

To me the robot needs to be 3 things:
1. construction/demolition
You use the mech to do work that would normally take long time for men to do
2.
fighting (slow paced combat of monster hunter games is a good example here where nothing is garuanteed, the target may actually surviva your constant assaults because they have meaty protection but you get experience fighting them and studying their weaknesses and timing for every move they make which varies from pilot to pilot and mech to mech. But over long time when you practice against them you finally can take it down and then claim their mech parts just like the parts of the dead monsters in MH games which require skill and patience to figure out before you can master killing them.)
3.
exploration
Think about all the fun in metroid titles where you go to underground places and encounter strange looking enemies and there is story attached to the place you go to. Maybe you find blueprints to craft better weapons by going into the underground labs of abandoned bases or support weapons like anti-mech sniper weapon by getting deeper and deeper into the underground bases and overcoming the automated security which guards the place. But it's the mystery of not knowing what you'll see next that makes exploration fun in open world games.

If you can make a game that balances the three things it won't get boring for people who are not especially into mech sims. Put all the fun of the combat in learning and studying limits of the robots. eg some might be weak in certain areas of the body, some might have blind spots that you can exploit by choosing to fight on the side that it can't see as well, others might have bad turning rate so you stay close range to exploit the slowness, and others might just overheat so you look for signs of the machine running low on movement ability as it wastes all its energy on moves that miss and then you counter attack when it needs to cool down. Each pilot needs to have a personality like a character in a fighting game where they express themselves in how they fight. This will put a personal feel to the fight when you beat the pilot. You are not just fighting cannon fodder enemy but a character with a life, a family, and personality who is memorable on the battlefield and has distinct methods of fighting that is unique to him/her so it doesn't get boring and repetitive. (which a lot of FPS games do when you kill the 9999th soldier who follows the same routine over and over again. )

Yeah right, one of the oldest and best series still going. The first game in the series back in 1989 was all sorts of awesome.

It was a joke because of the cost of Steel Battalion with the controller.

Unless of course Mechwarrior costs $500 dollarydoos.

Steel Battalion was a great original IP. Do you guys like World of Tanks? I think there needs to be a mecha equivalent of that for mech warrior franchise.

But instead of just using mechs you combine the use of mechs with tanks and other support vehicles.

See Gundam 8th MS Team for reference. ie the squad isn't just giant humanoid machines doing everything, there is treaded machines for heavy artillery fire, trucks for detecting footsteps on the floor, and infantry with anti-mech weapons for surprise ambush in tight spots. (ie rocketlauncher to the nuts or explosive charge to key spots = mech takedown, plus standard choppers to take down robots is possible but risky)
If Macross Plus is considered the "Top Gun" of anime, this would be the "Platoon" of anime. (in the sense of there being a lot of guerila tactics involved in this anime like using cover and hiding in the environment to surprise enemy before they see you. Even using smoke to keep the battle close and personal in one scene)
