Persona 5 (PS4)

Post by Rorschach »

Just placed my preorder for this. Another case of it being the same price digital so what's the point? At least it comes in a nice steel case. Probably my most anticipated game of the year/generation. I put at least 100 hours into Persona 4 Golden, on the Vita no less. Pre-reviews are looking awesome -

http://www.polygon.com/2017/3/14/149101 ... s-hands-on
Now, finally, after multiple delays, Persona 5 is actually almost here. I’ve now spent 20 hours with a final version of the game, making my way about two months into the game’s story and midway through its second dungeon. And despite going in with sky high expectations — perhaps higher than any game I’ve reviewed previously — so far I am head over heels with the follow-up that developer Atlus has created.
http://www.usgamer.net/articles/persona ... ady-hooked
We've been waiting a long time for Persona 5, and the hype leading up to its release has been unbelievable among the fanbase in both Japan and North America. I'm not going to say that it lives up to the ridiculous expectations being put upon it after just two hours, but I will say that I'm legitimately blown away by the care Atlus has put into its presentation. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that it's already the most beautiful JRPG I've already played
http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2017/03/ ... rts_on_ps4
There's no point in beating around the bush: from what we've played so far, Persona 5 is utterly brilliant. We're around 20 hours in, and although we still have potentially triple that amount of playtime to go, we can't deny that we're absolutely enraptured with Atlus' latest. Even as we're sitting here right now, writing this article, we're thinking about what's to come when we take our next trip to Tokyo.
Looking very much forward to April 4th. PS4 owning all contenders this year.

It's going to feel weird playing this on tv when I've played all of them on handheld.

I'm looking forward to the graphical upgrade. It looked great on the Vita but that was a small screen. Definitely more excited about this than Zelda.

Yep this will kick witcher 3's arse for sure.

Not a weeaboo. Just think japan is less tolerant of crap because they have to code on underpowered console peasant systems which has made them tough. (no wonder pc gamers were so angry that Zelda got so many 10s despite being on a platform with ancient specs :P )

Should I buy it boomy? Or back a kickstarter game that has already reached its goal? Tough decision to make...

Horizon Zero Dawn, Zelda BOTW, Nioh, Torment, Yakuza Zero, Nier Automata...fucken hell. Where do you guys get the time to play everything?

Wish I owned a Switch or a pc so I had nothing to play so it would relieve stress of having to choose. Good thing Mass Effect Andromeda sucks so I have one less game to worry about completing. Haven't touched FF15 or Trico yet.
If this game gets more 10s than zelda on metacritic I predict Zelda BOTW fans and Witcher 3 fans will try to band together and combine their forces to drag down the user score together to keep Persona lower. Sort of like that episode in Transformers where megatron must grudgingly assist optimus prime in order to survive. It's the battle of the hives. You see I think there are less Persona fans than fans of Witcher and Zelda. If the two hives unite to form an alliance maybe they can both benefit and keep Atlus from rising to the top as best game publisher of all time and make Sega angry so they will care about the west. (where is my port of PSO2 on the PS Vita sega? Still waiting..)

Reviews are out. ign gives 9.7. ACG gives It a buy.
Everyone should Just trade in your copies of mass effect Andromeda At ebgames for this and show EA you will not tolerate half arsed Games.
Look At How the angry response to Call of duty infinite warfare worked. Activision blizzard have responded by going back to making tired World war 2 shooters where you can no longer jump-fart-dodge in mid air to move around like a super hero. And People won the Battle. I suggest People copy the example.

Eagerly await reviews comparing this to witcher 3 which doesńt let you Play as a skinny japanese teenager because It lacks character customisation. Something that pissed me off about the witcher 3 because People Said Its Perfect when It isńt. Elder scrolls Games let you mód in skinny People, porn, and New things easily.

JRPG/life simulator but just an awesome game. Person 4 Golden is still one of the best games I've ever played. Hard to describe, best just watch a review of it. All in all, an awesome experience. With the first quarter the PS4 is having it has handily won this generation.

About three hours in now, this will probably be in my deck for the rest of the year. Game has a stupid amount of polish on it, definitely worth the wait. Kind of wish it got a Vita release because it would make an awesome handheld game like Golden. You'd be mad not to get this game at $79

Pokemon with deamons. Think Yokai Watch but for teens and controlled by sega, and you have characters that have to go to school and manage life with fighting evil.

Shin Megami Tensei is popular series now after Persona 4. If you like turn based jrpg this game is that.

This was supposed to come out for ps3 but because it took so long it was a ps4 release. Much like zelda they polished the title rather than rush it out which is a great thing.

If you like this you might want to try out some of the older SMT games on the 3DS too.

In a fight I think Pokemon would crush the demons from SMT games personally.

Pokemon would win. Why? Pokeballs and breeding.

I see no reason to think Pokeballs wouldn't work on SMT demons as well as they do on Pokemon. They're just too similar. Pokemon, however, as used to dealing with Pokeballs. Once they realize that Pokeballs work on the Demons, they'll start grabbing them and using them.

As for breeding? Well, to get a stronger demon in SMT, you have to fuse two others. Power goes up as numbers go down. But with Pokemon, you get a stronger Pokemon by careful breeding. Power goes up as numbers also go up. That's a pretty big advantage.

And finally, let's not forget that there are some Pokemon, like Silvally, Ditto, and Smeargle that just flat out break the rules that SMT demons are bound by. The SMT demons may seem stronger at first, but I think Pokemon would win in the end.
Nintendo and sega need to release a fighting game pitting the two universes together to see if they can make the best VS fighting series and introduce new people to the games. Use the Pokken Tournament engine.

This is my first Persona game and I'm absolutely loving it.

The style and presentation is off the charts awesome.

Much more deserving of the high scores than BoTW.

Loving this game now, up to 10 hours in and still haven't finished April yet. The storyline is a lot darker than PG4. The Palaces are huge, I remember knocking over the ones in PG4 a lot quicker but the combination of enemy types and proper design makes them a lot larger now.

Re: Persona 5 (PS4)

A lot of fans of SMT games were actually put off by the bright and happy feel of Persona 4. to them it felt like it was betraying the dark tone of the franchise and going too much into a Scooby Doo direction. But maybe that is good thing since it helped attract new people to the franchise. For games about demons it is natural for it to be dark game.

BTW this game is way more deserving of its score than Witcher 3. (haven't bought it yet but I feel obligated to see if I can trigger Candy when he unignores the posts) BotW is GOTG and it runs at 20fps. If consoles like PS3 (which Persona 5 was made for) and Wii U (which Zelda BotW was made for) are getting games with 9-10 scores across the board, then it shows old underpowered machines are the kings of game platforms not PC. Candy must grow to accept this. Business can't profit if only 2 people have the high end pc to play Crysis sequels and then go out of biz because nobody can play it. Nintendo knows what they are doing. Listening to you will make them into an EA clone. (ie making shit looking games that look worse than games a decade ago on high end platforms lol ME:A damage control is waste of time buddy.. The tribe has spoken)

Time to take Horizon out of my PS4 and pick this up tomorrow!. I don't know what took me so long.

It's going to feel weird playing a persona game on tv because I've played 3 of them on PSP/Vita.

That reminded me you can get them (Shin Megami Tensei: Persona, Persona 2 Innocent sin, and Persona 3) on vita.

Will buy the old games digitally to get a feel for the older darker games. Recently bought 2 16GB memory cards. They are getting very hard to find which was putting me off buying digitally before. PS Vita needs HDD storage to swap out which games you wish to play on the go without having to delete and redownload games from the server all the time.

Who knows what the future holds? Maybe there will be a port (with added content) to Vita and/or Switch later? (it might help Vita sales)

I have noticed that SMT doesn't get the love of Persona.
SMT is huge in japan but not in the west.

There is a good discussion about some of the reasons why in this vid:
I think it's just mainline series fans are scaring people away from it. It is fear that if the non-mainline games get too much attention maybe it means less SMT games than persona games? Sort of like how fallout is now known more for it's "oblivion with guns" games more than the original PC isometric view point and click games? They are both good series. Perhaps it just comes down to how something is presented to people and their first impressions which then mould their opinion.

Eg I like a lot of hong kong action flicks because I watched them as young kid and think the action is a lot better because stuntmen are involved in the fighting and the way things are choreographed like a deadly dance and it is the same thrill you get from playing fighting games where there is rythym in the fight. You don't get that in hollywood movies like the matrix where CG does everything and gravity is very floaty. But someone watching the Matrix but who didn't watch many good action martial arts movies would think the fights are edgy and cool because of the special effects and the nice way the camera is rotating so you can see in slo mo where the hands and feet connect and this overall makes the movie more slick in presenting information. But the fighting is not necessarily better compared to old hong kong movies which contain cheesy acting and dialogue and low budget feel.

I think that is what is happening with Persona because it has very good polished presentation.

...

Currently the cheapest I have seen Persona 5 is at Big W for $79 retail. (same as JB) So if you buy somewhere else, make sure to price match. (ie EB games who always seem to price about $10 higher being a specialist game store) Sale ends after Aprl 19th.

related:
discussion about the civil war between SMT fans and Persona fans (warning: long)
We can all agree that persona's popularity in the west actually helps SMT despite Persona being more popular causing Atlus to focus on Persona more. (because overall it's good for the SMT series in general - much like how the Michael Bay Transformers movies generate income for toy companies and you then see new cartoons and toys made from classic TF. The logic is that more money = more chance the west sees releases of all games in general rather people begging before they are considered for release before something is done. More sales = more releases in general. If SMT doesn't sell amazing numbers but Persona does, then there is still better chance of new SMT stuff coming out because Persona is part of the franchise. Fire Emblem for instance survived after Awakening but prior to this it was dying. Fans need to look at it from this perspective - the otaku can keep niche series alive longer than just dedicated base of hardcore fans . As long as the result is quality, we shouldn't worry.)

For those of you who want to save a few dollars you can get the PS3 version of Persona 5 for $70 on PS Store

https://store.playstation.com/#!/en-au/ ... NA5X000001" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The differences between the two are small. Just blurrier graphics because of the 720P resolution. Keep in mind that this game was originally targeted for the last gen on PS3 not PS4.
usagamer says it's pretty much identical apart from the minor things.

Seriously, are all the Persona games like this? If so I think I need to get myself a PSP and the entire series because this is AWESOME.

Been a very VERY long time since a JRPG has drawn me in so hard (Final Fantasy X). I really like how the game gradually opens itself up to you. There are an awful lot of systems in play but it doesn't dump them all on you at once, gives you time to play and experiment with them.

Holding up shadows to try and collect their personas...am I actually playing Pokemon?
