It also appears one of the paid talking points was to rage on about how smooth it is at 60fps and never dropping under that. Riighhtt.

Probably runs fine when you're less than 10km from their data centres

Jeff Gerstmann pretty much buried it on the latest Giant Bombcast.

"It's like PC gaming, only worse in every respect", or words to that effect.

Not that I'm surprised.

10 years from now, maybe, this could have serious merit.

They should have just launched another game store with the differentiating feature of the option of streaming your gaming library from anywhere along with downloading and playing locally.

The problem is most people have windows PC, so google would need to license windows in their server racks. Stadia uses a linux distro.

The use of linux too could be an explanation for some performance differences/anomalies.

I feel this will always be just out of reach, as Internet infrastructure improves so does the power needed to pump out the latest game.

In 10 years time Stadia might be trying to stream GTAVII in 8k @ a ridiculous fps in VR or something

Fair point.

The bit where you pay full price to stream a game is also very off-putting.

Software-as-a-service is a cancer on the whole industry. Internet goes down? No access. DNS issue on the host side? Now you can't access your shit. A certain brand decides to pull their license from a certain developer? Now you can't download that game you bought.

Fuck that, and especially fuck users that think SaaS is a good idea for any reason at all.

Well yeah if it's going to be a netflix-style service it should be a netflix-style subscription.

Fuck this bullshit streaming for gaming. I feel like it's these asshole shoving it down our throat because as of yet, I haven't heard many gamers asking for this shit. Waste of time if you ask me. Hope it fails miserably and that both Microsoft and Sony (and any other potential gaming streaming companies) are watching this shit closely.

Yep. I think the idea of play anywhere is what is driving it but most games don't translate to a tablet etc well. I for one have no interest in it but I've never been a portable gamer but I do get fucked off when they are trying to replace my home gaming with it. If I'm running something in 4k/8k HDR10+/Dolby Vision I want it all locally for best performance and quality of assets.

I'm hearing of overheating and shutting down problems now. Surely it cant be frm overuse. I can't imagine anyone having a big gaming session on one of these.

Game streaming as the only way to play the games has got to be the opium dream of some IT execs and lawyers that spend all their time in an office with 100+Mbit fibre connections down the road from the data centre.

Fuck not actually owning the games you buy. Fuck having to pay a monthly fee to play games you paid full price for. And especially fuck all that and not even getting a good gaming experience.

I don't often day this kind of thing, but I hope Stadia dies a spectacular death. This is the one Google experiment that deserves to be killed. Being back Google Plus, Google Reader, Tracks, and Wave, FFS. At least those were useful.

The only way this works if you own a copy you can play on your own devices like console or PC at you know the best it can run AND then if you want to you can stream it to a device out and about, if you just have to play that game on the train etc.

Yeah, but then you shouldn't have to pay full price for that game again to play on a device you can never own and may be discontinued at a moment's notice. But here we are...

Just add it to pile of failed projects that had promise but not supported properly - Google Plus. Google Wave, Google Talk (and by extension, Hangouts which is practically dead), Google Inbox and Nexus to name a few. The only thing Google has done right is offering a gigabyte of email storage but in the day when places like Hotmail were only offering 25mb, Maps, Translate and Web Search (before it became co-opted by ads).
