Years and years ahead of its time for not only Australia but most of the world I would imagine.
Will Sony be left behind?

Sony already has playstation now. So if this really starts taking off I can see them beefing up their own streaming efforts.

How did they know way back in 2008 to make a GIF perfect for today?
Also, while watching the replay of the keynote, the whole thing glitched up on two occasions while Phil Harrison was talking.
The irony was not lost on me.

This is a thing I did not know. This is probably the only positive thing I can think about the service. More games on Linux cannot be a bad thing.lestat wrote:Another interesting thing about the Googles service will be the use of Vulcan/Linux. So this might spur more AAA titles to be built to run on linux better.
Native Linux games run just fine though, is just that they're few and far between. Valve clearly aren't as enthusiastic with SteamOS as they once were, though

Re: Google Cloud based Console - Stadia
Another interesting thing google are doing is multi gpu rendering, offered through Vulcan games can leverage several other GPUs in the cloud server to do more complex effects/simulations.
Here is a demo of what google have been working on. Pretty cool stuff.

So pay a monthly fee and get up to 4k resolution and a free game each month, or don't pay and forced to use 1080p.

Oh my.
I expected bad. Google far exceeded my expectations. Absolute trash.
No Australia anyhow, as if there was any chance of a purchase in the first place.

They'll recoup their losses with the $999usd Monitor stand for the Mac Pro.

Is that $129 AUD? I'm in the market for a Chromecast Ultra, and if so, that's decent value.

Re: Google Cloud based Console - Stadia
I'm sitting here watching Vinnie Caravella, Alex Navarro and some other third guy talk about Stadia, and it occurred to me.
Google say 10Meg for 720p and stereo and 35Meg for 4k and 5.1 surround.
I'm on 42Meg NBN, and it's pretty good, but is it flawless? Hell no.
Every now and then still, youtube/stan/foxtel buffers.
It's not about what your top speed is, it's about how consistent it is.
Not just that, but unlike movies and TV where you're maxxing out your time at 2-3 hours, video games are more time commitment heavy. Not just that, but it's a more involved experience where any kind of disruption is very dis-engaging.
Look how sensitive gamers are to framerate and lag already. All it's going to take is one serious lag spike every 5 hours or so for gamers to get pissed off and bail out of this thing.

I would think if you only got one lag spike in 5 hours that would be amazing. Probably more like 2-3 every hour. Will never work here.

Re: Google Cloud based Console - Stadia
MS announcing that you can stream from your home system to your portable devices just killed stadia.
But yeah considering the state of our shitty internet in Australia, this is never going to take off here. I don't think Australia is on the list of countries for the service right now.

I can't even stream games from my PC to my Shield TV one metre away over 802.11ac wifi without serious issues. Ain't no way I'm going to be able to game properly from somewhere else in the country or world and have a good time.t0mby wrote:People said the same thing about XBL and 56k!pilonv1 wrote:I would think if you only got one lag spike in 5 hours that would be amazing. Plus there's the digital licensing issues. Google have been pretty great with digital licensing for other things, but they're also really great at dropping popular services at a whim, leaving people stranded...

Anyone else following the US launch?
It's the complete dumpster fire we all expected.
It's definitely providing tons of entertainment for my $0 entry price.

Apparently it's worse in France, people reporting a 4 second latency. This shit is dead in the water.

Google Cloud based Console - Stadia
4 seconds lag plus another 1 second from RDR2
Destiny 2, 1080p upscaled with medium settings.
Destiny 2, 1080p upscaled with medium settings.
Speaking of RDR2. 1440p, XB1X settings at 30fps on chromecast , 1080p uncapped in browser. With Destiny 2, it’s even more obvious that the game isn’t running at the highest settings. On a Chromecast Ultra, a “4K” stream looked closer to 1080p, and my colleague Tom Warren and I swore that the 1080p streams we were getting in the Chrome web browser looked more like 720p.
Initially, Google told us that it was using the highest-resolution, highest-fidelity build of Destiny 2 available. But Bungie later confirmed that our eyes weren’t deceiving us. “When streaming at 4K, we render at a native 1080p and then upsample and apply a variety of techniques to increase the overall quality of effect,” a Bungie rep said, adding that D2 runs at the PC equivalent of medium settings. That explains why the Xbox One X build, which runs at a native 4K and with higher-res assets, looks so much better than Stadia.

Re: Google Cloud based Console - Stadia
I'm reading wildly fluctuating takes on Stadia. As wildly fluctuating as some internet connections I suppose. GamesRadar says Destiny 2 on Stadia is a flawless PC-quality experience.

I think there's some big money hats going to the game sites. I read IGN's impressions the other day and they also read like it was the greatest thing ever when it's clearly not.
