Was going to post this. Hype is real.

From what I read you can also install other storefronts? So GOG, Epic etc?

Fark.

How good does that look? Shame only the 512gb model has the antiglare screen, perhaps that'll change. Still, this is awesome for people like me that can't be arsed with PCs anymore.

lol not with that storage. 64gb is almost worthless and 256gb is barely enough. SD car slot will be slow AF too.

Sounds like it's basically a PC so you could do all sorts of stuff on it. Very cool but I'd need pricing here.

You can install windows on it so assuming that's how you access other stores.

They said it's about 2TF RDNA2. 2-8 hours battery life.

Wonder how many years you'd get out of it before it wouldn't be enough for modern games?

Steamdeck RIP switch

Post by flipswitch »

I don’t think any retailers here will stock this, so it’s going to be through Steam, and that’s if they deliver to here. But that price. Only for the rich.

Edit:
Other retailers could offer it in the future such as Amazon.

$650usd isn't too bad for what it is. The microSD expandable storage is nice, but I sure wish they'd included a user accessible nvme spot for expansion.

Apparently it has a standard m.2 slot allowing even the 64gb to be upgraded. Though requires the owner to pull it apart to get to it. So some people might be happy with that.

It's a 2230 size though, so good luck getting a decent capacity one in that size :/

Steam is looking to replace its Big Picture mode with the new UI shown with the upcoming Steam Deck.

That's according to a Valve spokesperson, who confirmed the news in a recent Steam community post.

"We are replacing Big Picture with the new UI from Deck," wrote Valve moderator austinp_Valve in response to a question regarding the potential transition.

"We don't have an ETA to share yet though."

Wouldn't have thought a handheld interface would suit a 10-foot interface, but yeah. I haven't played a docked Switch so I don't know if the interface is identical to handheld or changes in some way.

Only issue I see is the ridiculous pricing of it when it hits Australia - if it ever does. From memory, on EB Games stocked the Valve VR headset; just discourages competition on price. Would love one but it will remain an expensive novelty down under.

I'd love one but also concerned about how long it would reasonably stay performative. Would they also release a new one every year or two to keep up?

This is my main issue with the device. 2hrs-ish is quite ordinary. I really wish hardware manufacturers would priories battery life more.

4hrs should be doable.

The bulk of the device is another thing.

Just my thoughts on it, not everyone will agree.

I'd be willing to trade some of that off on price but I'm expecting it to be way more expensive than it should be.

Imagine PlayStation 4-level performance at Nintendo Switch mobile resolution or better and you have some idea of what Valve's Steam Deck can actually deliver in terms of raw performance. With minimal tweaking, you're playing Horizon Zero Dawn or God of War at native resolution at 30fps and to put it frankly, that's quite a marvel to behold. Steam Deck isn't a cutting-edge PlayStation Vita successor though - it's so much more than that. It's built around a Linux-based iteration of the Steam platform, meaning that in theory at least, you have a machine capable of playing the entire Steam library with access to games stretching back decades. On top of that, this isn't a locked down console, it's a fully open PC, meaning that you can effectively run what you want on it - including Windows, if you want.

...

Yes, there are still many improvements that need to be made at the software level and I can't help feel that elements like fan noise and battery life can only be resolved with a revised processor on a more efficient process node. And despite having hardware in hand for a while now, there are still many questions we need to answer - such as how well the handheld ideal holds up with Windows installed, for one. There've been many challenges in reviewing Steam Deck and many frustrations over the last couple of weeks. However, when the 'wins' started to roll in, I only only became more intrigued and excited about the system and the potential it offers. Reviewing Steam Deck is essentially reviewing a PC, which can be done in any number of different and interesting way. And with that in mind, I can't wait to read other reviews and to find out what other surprises the system may have to offer.

I'd really like to see the comparisons between steamOS and windows performance on this thing. No windows drivers available yet though.

Finally bit the bullet and picked on up from Kogan since GPU prices are stupid and not getting any better.

The hardware is just phenomenal, feels incredibly well built and the OS is wonderful. Haven't played too much on it yet since I'm on a 64gb model with only ~40gb of usable space. Can barely fit Wreckfest on it.

Have a 1TB SSD coming in the next week. Will fill it up with emulators once that happens. Will also get Epic and EA games on their at some point, whilst you can't put the Game Pass games on there, you can install the EA App and play any EA games that come with Game Pass Ultimate

Steamdeck RIP switch

Post by flipswitch »

Dang that looks good, and now you’ve got me interested in buying one!

Amazon sell them too.

I just bought the PSVR2 not long ago..( Which I like mind you) I’ll post my impressions soon, btw.

Bought a steam deck off eBay, $1,150 512gb, local pickup . Lives not that far from me.
