The EU Suppressed A 300-Page Study That Found Piracy Doesn't Harm Sales

The European Commission paid €360,000 ($541,980) for a study on how piracy impacts the sales of copyrighted music, books, video games and movies. But the EU never shared the report — possibly because it determined that there is no evidence that piracy is a major problem.

The Dutch firm Ecory was commissioned to research the impact of piracy for several months, eventually submitting a 304-page report to the EU in May 2015. The report concluded that: "In general, the results do not show robust statistical evidence of displacement of sales by online copyright infringements. That does not necessarily mean that piracy has no effect but only that the statistical analysis does not prove with sufficient reliability that there is an effect."

The report found that illegal downloads and streams can actually boost legal sales of games, according to the report. The only negative link the report found was with major blockbuster films: "The results show a displacement rate of 40 per cent which means that for every ten recent top films watched illegally, four fewer films are consumed legally."

The study has only come to light now because Julia Reda, a Member of the European Parliament representing the German Pirate Party, posted the report on her personal blog after she got ahold of a copy through an EU Freedom of Information access to document request.

The European Digital Rights organisation suggested in a blog post that the full contents of this report were intentionally suppressed, pointing to a 2016 academic paper by two Commission officials. The paper, "Movie Piracy and Displaced Sales in Europe", only mentioned the part of the Ecory report that highlights the relationship between piracy and blockbuster film lost sales, and excluded the other findings of the report. Additionally, the paper didn't even disclose that the cited information came from Ecory's study.
This might explain why nintendo isn't dead yet even though candy has been trying to kill them off for ages by selling roms to little kids so he can upgrade his pc.
Anyway it has been known for ages that the only idiots that want to make piracy illegal are those who think poor and unemployed people ever had the money to buy the overpriced shit in the first place and somehow believe that these people who had no job taking free shit (in virtual form) should count as a "lost sale".

I have watched dozens of shit hollywood movies I know I would never have paid actual money for and seen a lot of porn for free which I never would have paid money for and feel no guilt.

The reason: something is only worth what a person is willing to pay for it. This is a principle of a free market capitalism where people can negotiate with each other about what price is fair and if both agree to it, then that becomes the price for that contract between the two people. (no central planner middleman getting in the way of things to intervene on what is private activity) Which is why I encourage people to just release games, music, movies for free and then let the consumer decide himself what it is worth through a donation system. It seems to work for youtube people who have been able to quit their day jobs once they get a certain amount of subs. (only until recently have they started to de-monetise people based on political views have we seen a problem after Hilary Clinton lost the us election due to so many people not caring about what the mainstream media says anymore, that the illuminati have been trying to kill off the alternative voices on social media sites. This will never suceed as alternatives to google are popping up to kill off the empire they are trying to create. Just like sega rose to fight nintendo in the console wars)

I think it is time piracy was legalised not stupid marriage for gays who don't even give a shit about religious ceremonies in the first place lol

fuck hollywood it is all funded by the drugs the elite sell to your kids and make huge profits from. The occultists never make any pro-christian movies I have noticed and seem to have so much negative messages in the movies to corrupt the souls of the young people. It is best that they pirate most of the stuff unless it is a really good movie which most of them aren't. Latests Star Wars mainline movie was shit. And everything is a super hero movie so there isn't anything worth watching if you don't like that.

As for games: I truly believe it is fair to pirate a game if you are not sure whether you like it or not, and then upon playing it, when you do get enough money to buy it, you can pay for it if you think it is worth supporting. The market is saturated by "me-to" games so there is a lot of junk floating around out there and the only way to know if it is good is to see the full version first. Reviewers sometimes skim over important stuff. The best reviewer is you playing the game and deciding if it made you happy. We've gotten away from the reason people play a game: it's not to determine which is the most liked by everyone else other than you and summarised with a number out of 10. It's to enjoy yourself and if the game isn't doing that (giving you enjoyment) you will know if you played it and thought it was better off failing by you not buying it. But you can't tell if a game is really worth anything until it's in your hands. (see aliens colonial marines disaster for an example)
