No, you do not have to pay to play.
The guest pass is just a demo really. You get the full game for 7 hours or 14 days (whatever comes first).
You just have to dl the client - I have got no idea how big it is.

Oh OK.So I take it you download the client from blizzard's website.After the demo ends is there a way to unlock the game by paying for it if I like it?

I should mention that I bought this game last week.I'm learning a lot of things from youtube, there's lots of tutorials and such, much better than blizzard's one in the game.

I've completed around 5 missions.I started on casual, then done a few missions on normal.I have just finished outbreak.I started it on normal but didn't go well and got defeated on the 8th day or so.I then went to youtube and there was a few walkthroughs of that level.Let me just say I need to learn a lot more.I know the basics of hotkeys, big improvement to my old strategy.I can see that this is a very good game despite my noobeness.I'm now playing on normal.The main campaign has a good variety of missions to keep things fresh.

I MUST get to Silver, and I'm damn close now.

Hopefully Dead Rising 2 will help break it's spell on me.

Tonight, I've lost more than I won, but the wins were oh so sweet. Nothing more satisfying than sending a screenfull of upgraded zerglings into your opponents base and just watching them go sick on everything.

From what I have seen so far, the production value of HotS is extremely high, and plays better than WoL in both multi and single player
