I played the hell out of beta phase 1 but sadly work is approaching a milestone right now so I am not going that hard with proper retail.

It is a bloody awesome game though, the campaign is quite well done even if it does under-deliver on the 'epic' which you can find in both SC1 and the Brood War expansion pack.

Well my 4v4 team is officially ranked 1 on all of the SEA server now, we are in fact the ONLY 4v4 team in 'Diamond' league.

Good times, we are all playing random too cos we play 4v4 just for fun haha.

I've played online a few times but I keep getting owned. I'm not very far through the single player though so I've since then been sticking to that. Anyway what is the best way to get a hold on how to play? 4v4 matches? just losing a bunch of 1v1s? tutorial? Thats a good point actually, I haven't done the tutorial does it teach you the multiplayer side of things?

Tutorial, challenge maps (essentially focussed tutorials), then losing a lot of 1v1s (4v4 is terrible prac for the basics, but it is fun so give it a shot), the key is to find people of similar/higher (but not THAT much higher) skill and play with them a LOT. probably worth looking at some online vids explaining basic micro/macro tips like how to use hotkeys effectively, which units are good, what a good starting build order is.

That's if you want to skill up fast anyway, the alternative is just to play a lot and enjoy yourself

I remember meeting you when you came down to melbourne for the tourney SJ. Good stuff making it into diamond league.

I still cant wrap my head around competitive rts. So many things to think about, so many variables so I usually play custom maps with mates and occasionally do the odd comp stomp.

Im pretty amazed with what map makers are doing with the editor. That Final Fantasy map and 3rd person zombie shooter look so good!

I'm getting better. I've managed to claw 5 wins out of 1v1 last night and bring myself up to Rank 39 in my silver division.

It's getting easier to multitask and macro.

I have pretty much sailed through the SP campaign on Normal, only having to repeat one or two missions a few times.

But this last mission 'All in'. Ugh. Struggling bad. I've got the Nydus Wurms version.
Can get to 70-80%, then the Hydralisks and Ultralisks just rip my defences to pieces.
Then the zerg swarms just get totally out of control.

After a long, long losing streak, it all seems to have clicked now and I've won 6 of my last 9 one on ones. Would have been 7 from 9, except my PC crashed when I was winning.

Zerg all the way. I rush hard and fast, and if it fails, I usually move onto Hydras/Nydus Wurms, or upgraded Mutas/Corrupters.

Complete noob here when it comes to rts games, I don't think I've ever owned one.

Should I bother buying this? How does this game fair for us noobs who don't play these types of games? Will I be overwhelmed with it, is it easy for to learn?.

It's certainly getting excellent reviews.

Total RTS noob here also.

Burnout and a long dragging console gen is pushing me into AAA games in genres I haven't previously played in an effort to keep my gaming fresh. And SC2 has hugely delivered for me.

My previous RTS experience is a tiny, tiny bit of the original Command and Conquer and Warcraft3.

Really enjoyed the single player campaign and managed to play through on Normal difficulty with reasonable ease. Only got stuck on a handful of missions, and cracked them on my second or third attempt. There is an easy difficulty setting also.

Rolling into Multi, if you've played SP campaign first, it would be much easier to roll straight into Terran due to familiarity with the units from SP, or even Protoss which you do control in a few SP missions.

Zerg really appeals to me, so I jumped straight in with them. Lost all five of my placement matches. Then went something like 0-20. But the funny thing is, and this is where SC2 shares some multi-player DNA with SFIV, it was FUN losing all those games. I think mainly because every single time I lost, I was learning massively about the game every time. I'm about 35-35 now, and I think i'm on the verge of cracking into Silver.
That's the beauty of multi in Starcraft2. It put me straight in with the other homeless n00bs, so I've managed to start fighting my way up from the bottom.

I say DO IT.
