Candy Arse vs Pat: Pimp Challenge (GTA, Alan Wake + 2 duds)

Post by Pat »

Image

Ammended Rules: 26/7/2006
The lists must meet the following criteria:
Minimum of 5 games that are new IP/not sequels
No game may be in both lists
Due to agreement, we will both drop MGS4
=======================================
Scoring: will be based on an average of the scores each game receives from the following publications: EDGE magazine, Gamespot, Eurogamer.
=======================================
Monsieur Candy Arse and myself have decided upon a Challenge.

Candy Arse claims I have a "nose for shit games", and I dispute that and claim that Candy Arse only pimps EA games. Obviously, we both can't be right - so now we have both agreed on a Pimp Challenge.

We will each choose ten games that we are legitimately looking forward to. This will conceivably be a long term project that will test our radar for qualerty titles. Was I right to pimp Prey? Will Candy Arse pimp Madden 2008?

The winner will be decided based on who has the highest level of critical acclaim for their nominated list of games.

As a general rule this is what we're nominating based on:
so i'm putting down 10 games that i have a legit interest in, and can be backed up by past gaming habits/obsessions

My games, edited to reflect new rules -

Grand Theft Auto IV - 360/PS3
Virtua Fighter 5 - PS3
Forza Motorsport 2 - 360
Crysis - PC
Guitar Hero 2 - PS2
Supreme Commander - PC
Heavy Rain - PC/PS3
Assassin's Creed - PS3/rumoured PC and 360
Mass Effect - 360
Dead Rising - 360

That's right bitches, no Madden. I'm far more than a one-trick pony. Goodbye C&C3, RE5, whatever else I've cut. Hello Crysis, Assassin's Creed, Dead Rising (yeeehaw!), Mass Effect.

Oh and I'm also, ludicrously, taking a gamble on a Quantic Dream game. Yes I'm aware of how Fahrenheit is the premiere Pat disaster, but it still started off amazingly well and had some great ideas, just that the story was drug fucked by the end. I think they'll learn and apply the lessons, plus the tech preview for HR impressed the heck out of me. Bring it. Also Cage should be thankful that I'm the one pimping his game this time, not Pat. I could have just saved his company from doom.

Candy wins. They both have MGS4, but Candy wins with GTA4 and Supreme Commander.

A lot of Pat's games I haven't heard of :(
Currently playing: Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition (PC), Far Cry 4 (PC), FIFA 23 (Series X)

Pat is doomed. The Outsider isn't out till 2008 and he will have long lost before then. Yakuza is a strange pick considering how awful the voice acting is, which is sure to knock it down a few notches.

Ambrose, Ive updated all of my games bar the bleedingly obvious.

As for The Outsider, it's Braben. It's essentially a cross between Oblivion, GTA, and 24 (not the game, not the camera editing). It's billed as an incredibly open world with greater emphasis on characters and the sense of immersion than the tech aspects. It's got a huge writeup in the new/current EDGE (165) and is on the cover too.

Looking at Cnady's list he has more established and well known franchises. He appears to be taking the safe route.

I am backing Pat, there are more left of centre and unknown titles. I like a man who isn't afraid to walk on the wild side.

A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal.

Oh I know I'm backed into a corner with the reception games like Prey, R6 Lockdown and Fahrenheit received. But these games Ive chosen WILL deliver. I expect support from Sculli on the Halo 3 front, and few will question Bioshock. Alan Wake as well has a very solid developer behind it, and even Candy will admit it is one to watch.

We will both have to abdicate from MGS4 though, and choose a new, distinct title. That will be sorted later.

You each chose 1 shit game to pimp (RS6: letdown #2, and C&C: we can't make good RTS anymore 3), however Candy pimped a roster update so I'm gonna hold that as a negative (Obviously the madden series is quality but there's absolutely NO REASON on earth to pimp a yearly update game like that).

I'm calling a tie.

i think we should add a rule: the game must not be part of an established franchise

that'd make it more interesting, i figure

Unfortunately these days that's nearly impossible, though I would then look at games such as Alan Wake, Heavy Rain, Supreme Commander if it passes muster.

Those games I listed, whilst what I would consider safe bets, are all games I am really pumped for.

Pat and I conflict on MGS4. I'm prepared to spot him MGS4 and include Metroid Prime 3 in my list, such is my confidence in my qualerty radar.

However I do have an idea, Pet -

2 360 games
2 PS3 games
2 Wii games
2 PC games
2 PSP games
2 DS games

So we'll make it 12, with the following rules -

A maximum of 6 sequels/yearly titles across the board. The rest must be original IP, or something to this effect.

What say you?

of course it rules out the best games on the market, what's the point if they can pick obvious winners?

Pat's list doesn't have nearly as many sequels as Candy's, so bonus points there for originality.
