The Wii Thread. DECEMBER 7, $399.95

There's been some reports saying it's confirmed that online gaming will be free (although I imagine some publishers will want to charge for play if it happens to require a centralised server, like a MMORPG if one is ever created for it)

The actual article it links to doesn't really seem like any sort of confirmation to me.

If they go with the DS buddy code system it would be nice if the system itself had a code, so you didn't need a separate one for every game.Q: A few years ago, Nintendo made a conscious decision to lie low when Microsoft introduced Xbox Live and began promoting its subscription online gaming service. In retrospect, does that look like a good decision?
A: I wasn't here. What I can tell you is the way we've approached online play now is really with a view to the masses. With Nintendo DS (a dual-screen handheld player), for example, we offer free Internet play in a wide-ranging series of games. Our focus is getting as many consumers to enjoy that online experience as possible. And we've done that.
Q: You're not pursuing a subscription model?
A: We view online gaming as essentially an enhanced way to enjoy the gaming experience and drive more sales of hardware and software.

Here you go from the same interview:
The online connection never disconnects and is on 24/7, with according to Iwata, the ability for Nintendo to send gamers downloads and updates & other promotional material whilst gamers are asleep (time zone configuration). When Nintendo have sent a download or demo, the LED lamp around the disk drive flashes to notify users that something has been sent. Iwata also gave the example that for titles like Animal Crossing, other gamers will be able to visit you’re town and interact or leave messages, even when you are sleeping or not at you’re Wii system, due to the 24 hour connection.
Additionally, WiiConect24 will also include a DS demo station channel, allowing gamers to download free monthly DS demos onto their handheld system through the Wii to DS wifi connection. Of course, virtual system downloads (nes,snes,n64,medadrive) and online gaming is also available, and some may not be aware, but web browsing is also going to be available free out of the box.
IT’S ALL FREEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
The whole WiiConnect24 concept sounds totally awesomeQ: How do you extend your online strategy to Wii?
A: It's the same premise. We will offer online-enabled games that the consumers will not have to pay a subscription fee for. They'll be able to enjoy that right out of the box. The Wii console is going to be Wi-Fi enabled, so essentially, you'll be able to plug it in and go. It won't have hidden fees or costs.

I was making a reference to Secret Window with Johnny Depp. I blame my writers.

If so, i get one at alunch. I won't pay over $300 for it. Not even $301. Nintendo are going to be making money off it as it is. Take a loss like MS and Sony you softcocks.Pat wrote:In light of the new rumours of a $170 Wii in the USA, I'm going to guess $299 AUD at launch here.
(170 USD = 224 AUD, add GST at 10%, add warranty buffer and nearest round price is $299)

Wireless modem/router = less than $199. Ethernet modem/router = less than $80 + $60 or so for the ethernet adapter.Ben wrote:But given you'd need a wireless router, or an ethernet hub to set the Wii up for internet it's probably not all that practical (or possible?) to go online with the Wii without a computer.
Since the modems are configured through the web browser (which is supposedly available with the Wii) and every console since the DC has had support for PPPoE (just in case you get a Speedtouch Home) you should be fine.
The Xbox and Xbox 360 on the on the other hand >_<
Depends on what they bundle it with. $170 was thrown around last week as the cost of the machine, but now EA man is saying it could be the price. In practice it just gives us a lower end estimate until there's an official announcement.mech wrote:Wasn't it $170 for Japan? I'll be surprised if it's less than $200 in the US.
Which might happen on Wednesday this week, in Leipzig.
