Redesign the 360 controller for FPS?

Post by Twit »

Today at Gamefest, Microsoft's product manager Robert S. Walker commented on an "advanced" version of the Xbox 360 controller that would make console gaming more suitable for genres such as first-person shooters. According to Walker, since there is no in-game mouse and keyboard support for the Xbox 360, Microsoft is looking at ways to modify the right analog stick for more intuitive and precise movements.

sauce
What would you do to make an Xbox 360 controller better for first-person shooters?

The first thought that popped into my head was to perhaps replace the right analog thumbstick with a little trackball. But...I dunno, that would make precise aiming and quick direction changes better but tasks like circle strafing would become tedious. Actually, a trackball might be good for RTS games (if it were on the left side instead). What else could you do, apart from just fiddling with sensitivity or something?

Any ideas? (apart from mouse and keyboard - it must be couch compatible!)

a split control pad, so one in each hand. The one in the right is motion sensing and the one in the left has a stick and an acelerometer.

I heard another company tried that grey, and everyone who used it agreed it was harder to control and less accurate than dual analogue sticks

I would leave it the way it is now. No changes and everyone is on the same playing field.

The phantom lapboard looks very shmicko for couch keyboard/mouse gaming.

that remains to be seen

and you couldn't possibly imagine that just perhaps MS has got the spooks because of the possibility nintendo hasn't put the entire future of their company in a controller that doesn't suck?

How does it remain to be seen? E3 was months ago.

Not being a great accurate perfect controler and sucking are too entirely different things mind you.

I'd move the a b x & y buttons onto the prongs so you can hit those functions without lifting your right thumb off the stick for jumping/reloading etc.

A three-pronged approach ala N64 could have the best of both worlds. Two analogue sticks plus a track ball... although I can't see that happening.

They should give up and just start supporting KBAM in game and they should do this before Halo3.
