GC 2006: Stranglehold Progress Report
We leap over tables to get new impressions on John Woo's next project.
by Jeff Haynes
Saints Row

August 24, 2006 - We got a quick look at the E3 build of John Woo Presents Stranglehold at the German Games Convention. While there haven't been a lot of changes made between the build in Leipzig and that shown in May, there were a few new details released about the game that we'd never heard about. That means we pass the savings (and the info) onto you, dear readers, here at IGN...

First of all, we found out that the game is set 18 years after the events of Hard Boiled, which picks up with Inspector Tequila (played by Chow Yun-Fat) fighting two separate triads threatening to pull Hong Kong apart. When his daughter gets kidnapped by one of the gangs, Tequila fights his way across Hong Kong to find her. Eventually, he follows the kidnapping trail to Chicago, where he fights against Russian mafia members and gangsters. Finally, he makes a swift return to Hong Kong, and he attempts to put an end to the triads once and for all.

While there really hasn't been much of an adjustment to the gameplay (Tequila still slides across a table effortlessly), the development team, which last developed Psi-Ops, have coined the term Tequila Time for action sequences where you can move at normal speed while your opponents move in slow motion. Tequila Time is great because while it can be manually triggered, it will also go off every now and then depending on the specific move you perform; like running up banisters while shooting. Depending on the accuracy of your targeting, you may wind up getting specific style points, the start that Tom was talking about in his last review. Filling it up does allow you to perform special moves, such as the "Tequila Bomb," a move where Tequila spins in a circle and shoots any enemies around him while white doves fly around in the background. Fans of Woo's movies will recognize and understand the symbolism of such an act. While there are only five specific special moves in the game at this point, the designers are planning on putting in much more shortly.

The designers are also planning on putting in many more features with the game itself, particularly with the concept of critical hit zones. For example, if you manage to shoot a criminal in the eye, he'll actually clutch his bleeding eye socket before he falls down. Other characters will get spun back or knocked down by the impact of your gunfire, but beware, because Tequila will have the same response to damage himself. Apart from the single player storyline, we also found out that there will be up to 8 players in multiplayer matches (with all the classic multiplayer modes that you know and love). But, one thing that the developers wanted to particularly stress was that there will be no difference between the PS3, 360 and PC versions of the game. In fact, they're going out of their way to make sure the game is exactly the same regardless of the platform. That sounds fine, considering that Stranglehold seeks to put a new cinematic spin on environmental destruction. We'll have more on Stranglehold as it becomes available.

So the developers behind Psi ops are behind it, explains a lot, Psi ops was a quality title, especially the way it pushed physics on last gen machines.

Yeah this is going to be available on 360/ps3/pc.

For all of you John Woo fans...including me :D

"Red Cliff" Cast Confirmed
02 Sep 2006 [ Chinese Cinema News ]

Director John Woo has finally confirmed the casting for his long-delayed historical epic "Battle of Red Cliff", with Chow Yun-fat, Ken Watanabe, Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Taiwanese supermodel Lin Chi-ling in the lead roles. The film at last appears to be moving closer to actual production after being announced some time ago. This news comes on the back of the reports of Woo signing a co-production deal with China Film Group to finance the film. Interestingly, original co-producers, Asian Union Film & Media have dropped out and are apparently aiming to make a TV series based on the same story.
