What themes still persist in modern games? Nintendo had Final Fantasy, Zelda, and Mario.GreyWizzard wrote:Okay, who had better music back in the day? SEGA or Nintendo?
I'm talking 8 and 16 bit.
My vote goes towards SEGA. I admit that in their systems Nintendo had better sound chips, but I just think that SEGA had the better composers. They just produced more memorable tunes.
discuss.
My vote goes to Nintendo. SNES had fantstic sound hardware.

Re: Sega vs. Nintendo - who's best? That's a tough one to answer, because I think the nostalgia factor plays so heavily and it's nigh on impossible to remain bipartisan. I've tried to make my decision by listening to music from games I haven't played much of, in an effort to avoid the nostalgia bias.
If we're comparing Nintendo's first party games with Sega's first party games, I'd barely give the nod to Nintendo, thanks to DKC, Zelda and Yoshi's Island. But seeing as I've played most of Nintendo's first party stuff, it's hard to make a call without there being some retro memories kicking in.
If we're talking about what's available on both systems, Nintendo takes it far too easily, in my opinion.
Squaresoft's remarkable talent pool - I'm talking about Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger) and Kikuta (Secret of Mana), not Uematsu of FF fame - is legendary in the SNES era, and when it comes to the NES era, it's hard to go past the Megaman series, River City Ransom, and the amazing moon level of Duck Tales.

Sonic Adventure had a great sound track
This is a collection of tunes from Sword Of Vermillion on the MD.
It had this awesome sound test mode where you had to plug a control pad into the second port and press some buttons... it then gave you details on how to correctly setup a megadrive for stereo sound and how to connect it to an audio recorder Best sound test mode ever. Great sound track, more than made up for the okayish RPG.

Yep, Hubbard is a legend. Not sure whether he did Cybernoid though. But yeah, Hubbard had heaps of good stuff back in the C64 days.GreyWizzard wrote:I was thinking about Outrun the other day... When I get home I shall have a hunt.
I'll take a looksee for some c64 stuff too. I don't know too much about it though. PC gaming for me started with a Microbee and then into IBM compatible PC's in the mid to late 80's.
Some guy called Hubbard right?
