I could be here all weekend in a thread like this. So many classic 2D games still look and play as good as ever, whilst 3D tends to age really badly.

I think I still have Astrowars at my mums house. I used to have a game similar called Caveman or something. You had to steal eggs from a dinosaur or something.

That's the MegaDrive version, which I know you didn't play selfish! The SNES version was a pale imitation.

I loved Crusader! Recently I downloaded the entire NES library and a partial SMS library. Right now I am playing through the Wonderboy games (heaven!) Still looking for a copy of Psycho Fox though, loved that game to death.

the snes version was a totally different game candy, and was a piece of shit
the md version was, on the other hand, fucking awesome

just because i didn't own it didn't mean i didn't get to play a fucking shitload of it
and that boomerang is easily in my top 5 controllers

earthworm jim 1 and 2 are the only old games I enjoy playing today, even old sonic is a bit boring because i've played it so much and it isn't near as interesting as EWJ.

EWJ 1 & 2 are amazingly stylish, and the humour is right up my alley, I mean the character himself is brilliant... a worm in a special suit, and he's animated brilliantly, the striding superhero run for example.
and I love how his suit pulls him out and uses him as a whip.

The music makes the game even funnier, classical music is such a contrast but works so well. and andy asteroids is just hilarious.

and the humour!
professor monkey for a head, absolute gold!
and those cows... "well done".
the game show when you're a salamanda

Jim's Now A Blind Cave Salamander is undoubtedly the funniest thing I've ever seen in a videogame. I still remember the first time I played it... The combination of becoming a blind cave salamander for apparently no reason and the first movement from the Moonlight Sonata was just too much, all I could do was let Jim sink to the bottom of the screen as I pissed myself laughing. The effect of the screen warping when you went too close to the seedy villi was genuinely freaky. Exploding sheep, pinball bumpers and the absurd gameshow at the end; playing that level has gone down as one of my favourite gaming experiences of all time.

I suppose 5 minutes on a non-Nintendo console for you would be considered a shitload.

EWJ1 is my equal top platformer (on the MD, which I think had an extra level over the SNES one) with:

IMO, EWJ2 didn't hold a candle to the first one... I just thought it tried to be too diverse with minigames and such, whereas the first one was just the right combination of platformer, racer and bunjee-jumping :)

WoW reference: Tier one might set modeled off this guy ;)

Also:
Segagaga final boss with Thunderforce 6 music (from the cancelled DC version). Just awesome.
Segagaga again, pre boss intro. A familiar theme plays near the end. Go SEGA!

I can remember when I saw this advertised on telly. Straight down to the shop but left empty handed because the game was over $200!!! One of two games I know of on the Megadrive that cost over 2-spot. The other was SF2Turbo.

That's insane... although you were in New Zealand, and man they fucked up 16-bit gaming there. I know because I had to live there right when the SNES was getting into its groove in Australia and I had one and couldn't get any bloody games for it in NZ. :(

Yeah man, I hear ya. Afaik the Snes wasn't widely known in NZ till atleast halfway through its life even then I think it was pimped on Shortland Street as one of the characters Xmas present (The Super Mario Worlds bundle). The only time I saw games for it was in a video rental store in my town, other than that I never saw any games for for sale in retail until the time the 3DO was out and I discovered two stores, Gamezone on Symonds Street (Now GPstore) and Gamesman in Mt Wellington. They were like luxury stores compared to whatelse was around IE: Before gaming was taken seriously as a form of entertainment.
