Running videos through 360 without win media centre!
If you’re up with all the latest technical grubbins you may know that the 360 can’t stream videos without being connected to a Windows Media Centre PC, which is hardly the best solution seeing as XP Home is the most common version of Microsoft’s dominating OS.
However, our prayers have been answered as the newest release of Windows Media Player 11; Beta 2. This Beta is designed to eliminate both MCE and Windows Media Connect for sending your media to your 360, so it is incredibly important. However, this won’t be available on the 360 until the Autumn dashboard update, but when it does expect many copy-cat programs for your PC that may turn your 360 into a TV player, sort of like how Windows Media Connect can be replaced by other various solutions that include internet radio stations.
To enable this already on WMP11, right click on the “Library” menu tab at the top, and then click “Media Sharing”, and this will bring up all the various details of the devices available, and click on your 360 and then “Allow”, then “OK” to save all this kerfuffle. Now on your 360 go to the “Media” blade, and if you were already connected you will now be given a can’t connect error message, so select “Test Another Computer” and find the computer you want to stream music and pictures from, and this means streaming will function as before and gives you the added bonus of being video-ready.
Many thanks to Elektriq for the awesome mini-tutorial, and stick with Club Skill for more gaming news.

word of advice, if you use the mp3 streaming, hold off upgrading to wmp11. I had some issues with the media list not refreshing and so decided removing my computer from the 360's connect list and reconnecting would work. Anyways it can't find my now pc even though my pc can see my 360. Also there were some issues at first trying to get the 360 to see wmp11 in the first place, with a previous stored wmc connection.
So looks like to really get the most out of the new wmp11 we need the new dash update. stick with windows media connect for now.

i've always had bad experiences with wmv: seeking always seems a bit funny (or simply not allowed), the quality is rarely that good, audio synch seems all-too-eager to fall apart, and worst of all, you can't do anything with it - importing a wmv to premier or final cut is well nigh on impossible.
it's been a while since i'd tried to deal with them (been burnt enough by realmedia and wmv to understand that an open format is a good format and so avoided wmv as much as possible) - so maybe it's better now, i don't keep up with the wmv scene.
