$1,700 for a 70-series card is a fucking joke. The reviews better show astonishing performance to justify that shit. And even then...
Mind you, I don't think I'll be in the market for a new card until the 5000 series anyway

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
I just dug up the invoice for my 2070 - the 4080 12GB is nearly 2.5x the price I paid for that. What a joke.

Fuck I hope AMD really bring something to the table. Nvidia have entered the S-Tier rank of Cuntage

Welp. Ryzen 9 7950X draws 250W and runs at 95'C by design. The Core 12900 is about the same. The RTX 4000 cards look to be requiring substantial cooling and huge power consumption.
Whatever happened to the race for higher power efficiency?

Going through the reviews now, it looks disappointing, hot and gets beaten by a 12900k in gaming a lot of the time. Considering the huge cost of this new platform, it's an easy pass for me. I'll see what the 13900k offers otherwise I'll sit this round out.
The 5800X3D is a way better buy for gaming and faster without needing a nuclear power reactor to run it.

Everybody is like "it's not a problem because it's by design and it's running at the maximum clockspeed it can achieve at that temperature"
If it's not a problem, then why are you blasting how hot it's running as your grab line? Also, I absolutely think it's a problem! Even if it's not literally boiling a kettle in every game, I don't want my CPU to get that hot at all, ever!

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Cool vid from Roman here, it's quite interesting the thick IHS, guessing this is for the stacked cache versions coming. Clearly that's the endgame here for Zen4.
I think AMD had to push the clocks to compete with Intel, the stacked cache versions will allow them to downclock it back to sweet spot levels without losing performance thanks to the extra cache.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
I had a different takeaway from that video. I think the thicker IHS is (at least partially) because of the desire to maintain AM4 cooler compatibility.
Given that AMD has maintained cooler compatibility since Socket AM2 (that's over fifteen years!), I seriously doubt anyone would have been incredibly upset over a new mount requirement.

Just checking out the new videos of the Arc A750/A770. Definitely interesting looking for the budget end of the gaming segment and the designs look awesome, particularly the A770. Better than 3060 performance at a cheaper price, might pick one up for the media PC (still running a 1070 on that). Hope Intel sticks with it until they are competing with mid-to-high range Nvidia offerings in a few years - GPU market needs more competitors.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Looks like you need a system with ReBar otherwise performance is pretty poor. Interesting how these Intel/AMD gpus love ReBar but nvidia cards show little to no difference. The ray tracing performance is surprisingly decent for the price category.
I hope Intel continues to improve here, we sorely need another solid competitor in the GPU space, nvidia has gone full retard with pricing and their 80%+ market share.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Maybe next gen for me. Hopefully they can get a decent performance boost in the B-series without resorting to throwing millions of watts or planet-sized heat sinks at it.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Looks like the Zen 4 launch was a disaster.
AMD posted some dreadful numbers.

Nvidia is next, maybe these fuckheads will realise the prices they're asking for this stuff has gone full retard now. Also no one wants these fucking space heaters, get the power consumption fucking down!

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Would be impacted by AM5 & DDR5 requirements too wouldn't it? Also it's pretty hard to not look at the performance comparisons to the 5800X3D. I would imagine they're selling out right now.

There's not many motherboards available either right? Or was that the Intel launch?

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
mmm... while I agree with the sentiment, I don't think Zen 4 has been out long enough for it to have affected a full quarter. It's more likely to have been a case of nobody buying anything in anticipation of Zen 4. It'll be interesting to see how the December quarter is affected!lestat wrote: ↑07 Oct 2022 09:18 am Looks like the Zen 4 launch was a disaster.

Leaked scores, the 4090 is no slouch, it's fast!
It's crazy we're at a performance level of 4x consoles in raster and 5x in ray tracing already.

Jesus, that's quite the difference between generations. The other SKUs had better show that kind of increase!

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
There is a massive gap between the 4080 and 4090, plenty of room to slot a 4080ti in there, Also the 4090 die is heavily cut down, something like 2000 cudas cores are still left on the table for a 4090ti.
I think nvidia are just waiting to see what the performance of RDNA3 will be and will release it if they need to reclaim the performance crown. Looking at these numbers though, I think RDNA3 has its work cut out for it, especially with ray tracing.
