It begins.
I'm glad I still have my enthoo pro m, case is wide enough to host CPU coolers up to 194mm in height. Not many cases have that extra width you need.

https://videocardz.com/140065/nvidia-ge ... ew-roundup
4090 review roundup, the founders edition looks like the best card out of the gate. 600w power limit, 66 degree temps under load with 35db noise. It's on average around 60% faster than previous best cards, which is kinda the norm for nvidia every time they've jumped to a new node. The improvements are more noticeable at 4k, 1440p and below looks like you hit some cpu bottlenecks in some games. Ray tracing sees a good 2x improvement though.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Great review from derbauer here, excellent info on power consumption which does indeed seem not as bad as first thought. Basically you don't need more than the 450w stock limit, you hit a clock wall most of the time.

This is all good but I cant afford nor fit these cards in my case. Show me what the 4070 series does.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Snagged a Gigabyte 4090 Gaming OC, cost me $3100. Insane I know but honestly, I don't really spend much on anything else, at my age I can spoil myself with this. I expect to get a good 3 years out of it. 3nm is meant to be 2025 before we see the next big leap. There might a 4090ti but I'm already at my power limit at 450w.
I was thinking to wait for AMD, the 6900xt has been a great card but these numbers especially with RT, it will be hard for AMD to match it, DLSS3 is tech that can be a massive game changer and resale/demand for nvidia cards is still better than AMD.

Well done Lestat. Good on you too for spoiling yourself, you deserve it. You work hard and are rewarded accordingly.
You’re also set for many years to come.
I’m waiting for the Ti variant . I can wait.
I just moved house yesterday. Just settling in now. Very exhausting past few days.
I’m really looking forward to upgrading later on.

DLSS 3.0 seems a bit useless unless you've got a 240hz+ refresh monitor. Some of the UI artifacting is terrible.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Well, good on them for backpedaling, at least. Lots of commentary at the moment about it being relaunched as the 4070 for $799usd, which would be an excellent move if they do so.
Of course, they'll probably keep the $899usd pricetag...

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
4090 arrived today, it's friggen massive, I had it next to my 6900xt which is already a big card and the 6900xt looked small.
The size and weight of this thing, there was no way I was going to mount it without any support, thankfully gigabyte provide a really good support bracket that installs to the standoffs on your motherboard in the bottom right corner.
Here she is after mounting.
A closer look at the support bracket, you can see the metal bar at the back.
Cabled and lit up, the adapter is a bit messy, it protrudes out a bit and my case has 194mm of cpu height clearance and the cables with that bend just touch the glass.
I think I have a really good sample, I was able to hit 3ghz easily and with RT stress tests ended up with +190 core +1500 memory, gives you an effective 2970mhz and 24000mhz memory. Power consumption is pretty good, games sit around 350-400w, only certain stress/benchmarks can push it to 450w, increasing the power limit is pointless because you are voltage limited. Temps never go above 62c and sits in the 50s, the cooling performance is incredible.
With some extra volts, power consumption goes up 20-30w but I can comfortably boost over 3ghz, sitting around 3045-3060mhz. Seems to be the limit for this chip.
Performance is incredible, @1440p I'm so cpu limited now and everything I've thrown at it does 160fps with around 50-70% gpu util. Cyberpunk RT ultra at 1440p is cpu limited at ~100fps, native res and I still have around 30% util left in the tank. Very impressed. I get the feeling I won't need to upgrade for a very long time.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Did some 3dmark runs at max OC, 3075Mhz core, 1.1v, 24000mhz memory and power limit set to 600w, the tests seemed to sit at 550w, so the clock never dropped.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Intel overclocked the living snot out of it, problem is Intel didn't figure how to actually cool the thing. After owning the 4090 for a few days and running loads up to 600w with core temps of 65c, I'm seriously impressed with the engineering that went on here to achieve such a feat. 300w shouldn't be a problem to cool with a 360 AIO.
With the 13900k, it's clear the heat spreader approach and socket isn't working anymore, if we're going to be pushing these high clocks and power targets, we need direct die cooling and a socket/interface to do that effectively without crushing the die.
Even the whole way PCs are built needs a rethink if most of the PC now is going to be a massive heatsink.
Or maybe these companies need to stop shipping overclocked parts.
Personally, I'm going to wait till the Zen4 3D parts are made available, we saw how much uplift for gaming the 3d cache did for zen3, I think zen 4 with this cache will be a monster and not burn down your house. By next year too cheaper B650 and DDR5 should be a thing, right now all the motherboards and ram are a rip off.

It's great to see AMD and Intel trading blows with each release again.

Shame Zen 4 needs a platform upgrade though what difference does it make really. I don't think I've ever bought a new CPU and just popped it in to my current system anyway.
I've still got boxes of discarded PC heart and lung transplants. What do you do with them?

Worried this card will catch fire now, fucking hell nvidia, what idiot thought pushing 600w through a small connector was a good idea?

I don't think the 12VHPWR connector is an Nvidia design, is it? I thought it was an Intel thing?
But saying that, it's clearly a card that needs a PCIe 5 capable PSU, and that adaptor cable is... Worrying.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
This guy tested the thermal performance of a bent cable, doesn't seem to make a big enough difference to melt the cable, his theory was the user just didn't have the connector seated properly, which would increase resistance and cause overheating.
So make sure your cables are full seated and clicked in properly, just double checked mine, all clicked in properly.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
It's also where the bend occurs, isn't it? Closer than 3.5cm causes extra stress on the connector and can make it lose the firm contact against the conductors, hence the extra resistance and heat.
I'd have thought we would have a better form factor for power connectors by now.
