4080s are finally starting to come down to an attainable level. If they hit $1500 I'll bite. I'm going to invest in whatever new platform comes along mid next year. The Skylake system is still going strong. More than likely finally build an UnRaid NAS/Plex server to host my media library.
Yeah, I think the extra vram on the 4080 alone will be worth it in the long run. I can't believe nvidia have been skimping on it for so long that it's now a problem!
Having said that, I've very foolishly bought a 4070Ti to go with my new 4K monitor.

Has anyone here got experience with Asrock motherboards? I'm shopping for a platform upgrade now and am looking at b650e, x670 or x670e boards. Asrock appear good on features and value but I've never used them.
Yeah. I had an Asrock B350 motherboard to go with my Ryzen 5 1600X.
I had issues with two of the SATA ports, where they wouldn't work after a system reboot. Support was basically nonexistant when I reported the issue. The VRM heatsinks also had no thermal compound under them and would wobble if I pushed on them.
Mind you, that was a cheap first-gen AM4 board, from before everyone realised what big deal Zen would be. I still wouldn't go there again though.

I vaguely remember having an issue with Gigabyte boards being slightly larger than normal, lasting to scary flexing when installing the memory or plugging in the 24-pin power connector. That was a really, really long time ago though (15+ years), so I'm sure they've changed since then. In fact, I'm considering them for my next board, after Asus invalidated themselves with their recent shenanigans.

Not gonna lie, it looks pretty nice on my monitor arm. It's significantly lighter than my old Dell 30" though, so the arm has just shot straight to the top of its adjustment range and I've lost the tool to reduce the tension...

G-Sync monitors are funny. It's hard to tell what they are doing until you go back to a monitor or TV that can't do it. The frame matching it does is gaming changing. Haven't had to put up with screen tearing since 2014 when I got my first G-Sync panel. I had to use a non-G-Sync panel at work and it was rough. I've never compared it to Freesync but the only reason I've stuck with Nvidia for so long is primarily because of G-Sync.
yeah it's an absolute game-changer. I haven't experienced anything this smooth since the CRT days. There's no way I'm going back to vanilla displays after this.

New graphics card has shown up. I got a Galax 4070Ti SG. It's over twice the size of my old 2070 and barely fits my ThermalTake Level 20GT case. It came with an additional "pull" fan that clips onto the back and a brace thingie to stop it sagging. Oof.

Computer Alliance is selling a bunch of things on ebay with 20% discounts. 4070s available for $880. 3070s for $560.
I only know this because I'm getting tired of my 1070, which is really starting to give up after years of abuse. It's been an excellent card though; been using two 1440p screens for a while now (16:9 and 21:9). But it really wants to retire.
Looking at $1529 for the (almost) cheapest 4070 setup I can scavenge. Deliberately upped the memory and storage a bit.

For $188, the Ryzen falls behind the 4070 a bit, but I was thinking I'll take it for the price. Not super hip on that though; any thoughts?
The 3070 was more the point I was aiming for, but all this VRAM business put me off it; sounds a bit future-vulnerable. I couldn't find any similarly-priced RX 6800, but I've just now found an RX 6800XT for about $30 less than the 4070. Slightly outruns the 4070 apparently, and I have zero interest in raytracing, but that DLSS 3.0 sounds like it'll add a year or more some years from now. So a bit hesitant.
In other random news, I was recently forced to upgrade my *cough* Canadian Windows 7 to Windows 10. It had never needed activation. Amusingly, after upgrading, it still doesn't need activating. I had expected the online process to give me a headache but instead it just magicked itself into Windows 10 and ... stopped hassling me.
What CPU are you currently running? The Ryzen 5000 line is still pretty good, but remember that the 'G' stands for Graphics - it's their lower-end part of that line. If the 5600X is not much more, I'd get that instead.
The VRAM issue is very real, so definitely skip to the 4070 if your budget can allow for it - my 8GB 2070 struggled with some recent games in that department. 12GB still isn't enough (I think Resident Evil 3 tried to use 13GB...), but it is at least better. You'll be groaning at the massive frame drops in two years considerably less often, at least.

that CPU should be a nice boost over your old one, then. I don't think it'll be an earth-shattering improvement for single-threaded workloads, but multi-threaded stuff will be night and day

Been saying for a few years that I was going to build a new gaming PC. Well, I just purchased a Steam Deck (it’s incredible) and have my Series X on the market as well as my PS5 to help fund my gaming PC. Looking at purchasing a PC from Scorptec (they allow you to gather the items you need and they will build the PC for you and install Windows 11).
Does anyone know if they’re reputable? I keep seeing ads for Aftershock and they look pretty damn impressive…
New build went well. ASRock board was easy to build with, everything went smoothly. Man my eyesight has dropped since the last build though. That front panel header can kiss my arse.
