Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Yeah I wouldn't sweat it. 34% cost increase for maybe a 15% FPS increase, and that's 15% of a real life effect that -- above 60 or so fps -- is yet another layer of diminishing returns.
I'm not so much on a budget, but a "buy it if it's worth it" mindset. Thought for a while about getting the 1080, I even have a few nerd friends demanding I get it/1-upping me, but ultimately it's $200 for bragging rights that would be much more enjoyed as Mario Maker, Splatoon, and some other Wii U title (there's a few I'm interested in).

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Yeah I only have a 1440p screen and won't be doing 4k any time soon so it's not a huge issue. Probably better off spending the $200 on some games anyway
GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Yep, what I think. There aren't any true 4K cards yet anyway, probably the 1180 or 1280 but by then 5K screens will probably be the next goal.

Since I haven't built a PC in over a decade, do I need thermal paste or some shiz?
I'm getting the i5 6600K with this cooler:
http://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/PJYX ... 212x20pmr1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Edit -- Nevermind, I see the cooler comes with paste.
The case also only has 1 fan built in, do I worry about that?

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
I use Arctic Silver, supposedly the best but the Cooler Master stuff should be fine. Usually budget cases only come with one fan as an exhaust, not a big thing. I ran my first build with only one exhaust fan for about a year without a problem. Everything just runs hotter. More premium cases come with two or three. Any particular reason you are choosing the Deepcool? That looks a bit cheap and nasty, I know because my first case was a Thermaltake Versa H22 and that was $99. Not a terrible case but cheaply made. Once you hit the $100-120 mark things start to get better. I'm a huge Phanteks fan now, the P400 is a good entry level option from them. That or anything by Fractal, NZXT, Corsair or Cooler Master.

No particular reason, just it was $45 and had decent for-its-price reviews.
And I'm racist.

Fair call. I'd still recommend a slightly more expensive case just for build quality

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
So, ink hasn't dried yet, but a guy has agreed to buy my entire Dreamcast collection of games and whatnot for $1200. I could probably get more selling stuff individually but in the end couldn't be bothered. Now looking at upgrading the core components of my rig - going for a Kabylake i7 7770K, G.Skill TRIDENT Z 32GB KIT 4X8GB and the 200 series version of the Asus SABERTOOTH Z170 MARK 1 (I have the Z97 version of this and the build quality is on another level). Looking forward to building this system the way I want to. My first build came out of the shop and I had no real control over component selection at the time. Selling my old core components to a mate to bootstrap him into the Master Race. Think this upgrade should do for about 5 years at the least.

Should definitely see you through.
I decided on a mechanical keyboard and mouse. Ended up going with Mionix. Here's the mouse which includes a pic of the keyboard - https://mionix.net/product/naos-7000/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Keyboard has cherry mx black switches. Great feel and polite noise levels compared to the more clicky switches. Also has audio and 2 x USB pass through. I like Mionix aesthetics. Will be a good match for the workstation we're building in the new house.
I'm already eyeing off a new monitor and headset. And to think I thought I'd be happy with a new box only.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Have you looked into any Kaby Lake benchmarks, Rorschach? 7700k runs pretty hot.
GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Yeah, I was reading them today. Not much of an increase either in performance if the benchmarks are to be believed. Not sure now, wait for Zen or pick up an i7 6700K cheap?

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
7700k looks disappointing, looks like I'll be pushing this 2500k another year.
I'd love to try a zen but I've had first gen AMD hardware before and with a new architecture there are bound to be hardware bugs/issues. Besides the early clocks aren't going to be that high ~3.5Ghz so for older games it might be slower than the 2500k.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
True, it's disappointing because I was ready to pull the trigger on Kabylake. I might grab a Skylake processor in the end, hoping they come down in price once the new CPUs land. That said, these are pretty early benches. I'll wait until they've been in the wild for a month or so. My biggest issue is the heat generation. I have a cooler that can handle it but would rather a cooler running CPU in general.
Edit - Realistically I could hold on to the 4770 I have now, at least 3-4 more years in it but I would have to disappoint my mate who did cart wheels when I was going to sell him the bundle for cheap

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
My 6700k runs cooler than I thought it would. While gaming it hums between 30-40 degs with a Coolermaster Hyper 212x fan cooler. Marginally less frames than 7700k at 20-30 degs cooler stock or OC. If you opted for it I doubt you'd be left wanting.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
7700k is basically 6700k overclocked out of the box, so it's not too surprising the thermals are worse. Intel claim to have improved their 14nm process but it probably just means better yields and chips that can maintain those clocks.
It's frustrating how we've hit this wall for cpus.

I went Skylake - Kogan misprinted a price on their site, 6700K for the price of a 6700. Will pick up a new mobo and some RAM in the new year.

I think the fan on my cooler might be going the wrong way, I should be able to feel air being pushed out shouldn't I?

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
WCCFTech has some benches up now - not good. Single digit percentage increases in performance and actually worse in some instances. Gaming wise maybe a 2-3% difference in performance. So basically a hotter, slightly better performing CPU. Glad I went with Skylake in the end.

I think I might be the only AMD GPU guy here? I'm really impressed with the software. Updates are plentiful and substantial. With each recent release RX480 has built a decent performance lead over GTX1060 in many modern games. Here's a rundown of the latest release FYI:

My HTPC has an AMD GPU in it, off the top of my head the HD 5450.
I think the last time I had an AMD GPU in my main PC it would have been something like the X800.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Nvidia drivers have been shit all year, DPC latency, odd overclocking results, stutters and too many driver releases that don't fix previous issues, DX12 performance still disappointing relative to dx11. I really like what AMD are doing with their drivers, I wish nvidia would update the ancient control panel that takes 2 years to load.Peppermint Lounge wrote:I think I might be the only AMD GPU guy here? AMD on a roll, looks like Vega is ready for action.

Great news for scorpio if Vega is ready for production, AMD have Zen showing on the 13th.

What GPU is Scorpio using? The one you linked to 'Vega' is 12tf.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
It will be Vega based apparently. Vega has further performance per watt improvements needed to get to 6TF in an APU.
