Ironically it was nvidia pushing high fps gaming with their gsync technology, they got us all hooked on smooth high FPS gaming and now want us to throw it away and play at 1080p sub 60fps.

I agree, a 1080Ti is great for 1440p 144fps gaming, you'll get dips in in the 100~144hz range but gsync smooths that all out.

Next PC upgrade for me will have to be 4k 32" 144hz monitor and cards that are fast enough to do 144hz at 4k. We're probably 2-3 years away from that imo.

Yup, I won't be upgrading my card until the monitors come down in price. Bless the early adopters willing to play $3K for the new 4K Gsyncs

Sits between the 1060 and 1070 in performance, they 3 game bundle they're giving with the cards is pretty good.

Not sure if the mostly single digit game benchmark gains over rx 580 warrants the $100 price difference. Nice bonus games though. RX 590 also sucks as much power as a GTX 2070 which is a bit nuts.

The better reflections add very little visual impact, the massive drop in framerate though is a massive deal breaker.

It's the kind of stuff that is appreciated more in single player games. With that kind of performance hit, it's an unnecessary distraction in multiplayer games.

AMD Ryzen 3XXX series leaks.

Meant to be announced at CES in January, looks sensational and I'm very keen to upgrade to a 3700x, maybe even go the whole hog and get a 3850x.

I found it interesting that Consumer Ryzen cpus will use the chiplet design, this further confirms that PS5 and next gen systems will use the exact same approach.

Very cool and Intel is in trouble imo.

Edit.

wccftech has a write up based on the above leak video.

Looks like nVidia and Dice have been working overtime optimizing RTX for BFV, latest patch/drivers see big performance improvements.

I wonder if it’s optimisation or “optimisations” ( downgrades). BFV has a few RTX settings so you don’t have to play it at maximum settings if you need a fps boost.

I saw a previous developer video on what they did, basically it boiled down to not firing rays at the whole scene, but using variable rate tricks to fire more rays at objects that will reflect the scene and less at ones that don't, they were firing rays at stuff like foliage which was a waste of time.

There is also some improvements in the BVH(bounding volume hierarchy) structure to better cull scene geometry to help the ray intersect testing. There was some BVH driver bug that was hurting performance.

So yeah most of these improvements come down to better utilization of rays, firing them at objects that truly need it and trying to limit the amount of geometry you need to test against.

Here is the vid if you're interested.

Jesus. I was literally about to drop some denarii on a 2600 since I was assuming the 3x00 would be more of the same, but waiting a few months to get a 3600 or 3700 now seems like a no-brainer.

Been debating a Threadripper for my home lab / study machine as the 2600k is struggling with a few VMs. Might have to hold off for the 3850 now and consolidate it into a single entertainment and study machine. Hope those leaks are accurate, that looks fantastic.

I'm hoping AMD have miraculously solved the weird "more than 16 threads is detrimental for gaming" issue... but that's probably a Windows/dev issue.

Huge news from Nvidia at CES, they formally announced support for VESA adaptive sync.

Read all about it below.

https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2019/01/0 ... plays-ces/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

12 monitors will have it turned on by default, you'll be able to force it on non certified displays.

Excellent news.

LG 2019 OLED models support VBR and next gen consoles might as well. :)

So you will be able to use your GF Card with those TVs.

Monitors like these are really viable now, Variable sync for console gaming and PC, looks to be 120hz over DP only though, this is where you need hdmi 2.1, it has 3 2.0b inputs though. Possibly be a good upgrade for the Sony I'm using now, looks better than the philips one which is limited to 60hz and had limited inputs.

So it's looking like the RTX2060 might be the sweet spot for midrange performance.

Still massively underwhelming for the price IMO. Do gamers even want first gen, framerate crippling ray tracing? Give me the 2070 without the ray tracing garbage sub $600 and you would have a guaranteed purchase. As it stands my aging 970s will suffice until Nvidia pullls their head out with pricing or AMD decides to start competing in the video card space.

Well my single 970 is showing its age, and even though Far Cry 5 ran surprisingly well (I had to run it at 30fps though), I don't think I can realistically get another year's AAA gaming out of it.

...not hat I do much gaming anymore, but the spirit is willing, even if the wallet is weak.

This is looking very promising! 16 gig of memory, similar clocks to a 2080 and a $700 US price point. I hope this thing is competitive and really sends a rocket up Nvidia.
