Yeah, I found a MD -> USB converter about three minutes after I posted that.

It arrived today, and after about ten minutes of struggling, I decided that I just plain suck with joysticks and went looking through my Big Pile Of Random Crap for other interesting stuff.
I found an almost mint-condition Megadrive 6-button controller. As in, it's not just new & shiny, the buttons are all firm to press and respond perfectly and instantly to presses. This is what companies need to release as a 'fighting pad' ffs. It's positively tiny by modern standards, and sooooo good to use.

I agree about the MD pad. It is still my fav pad pre-analog sticks. such a perfect bend to the shape - it just sits perfect without having obvious handles and the buttons are fantastic. Love it!

It is a very different sort of pad...it uses micro switches like the neogeo pad...some people love it some do not because they have never used a pad like this before. It will take anyone time to adjust to it but every design decision for this pad makes sense...the way i use to use mega drive saturn pads neogeo pads etc etc...is by resting one side on my knee and using my finger so i could press multiple buttons and shit without a problem.

the pad was designed by OneHandedTerror a well know tournament player..who uses Chun and as you guessed it is one handed so its simply made by some company that have no fucking idea what they are doing [these guys are the same people behind the MK stick that will come with the T.E of MK9]

maybe i should import this so i can give impressions and shit and see how it stacks up vs saturn pad mega drive pad neogeo pad ascii pads etc etc..i wont use it for day to day play because frankly i an arcade stick sort of man..give me my virtua stick high grade or give me death blah blah  ill check later tonight if its easy enough to import this im gonna do it

here is a shot of the inside and a look at the microswitches

I have been slack about doing anything joystick mod-wise lately. Gotta get on that shit! But first things first, the buttons on my TE don't feel as responsive as they once did. I'm sure it has a lot to do with one night where I was particular careless and there were crumbs on the plexi of my stick; I blew them off.

Is there a suggested way of cleaning SANWA buttons?
I am just being precious btw, it is still fucking responsive as. I bet it is still 100% fine and this is all psychosomatic, I'd just like to put my mind at ease.

My future joystick plans will be to replace my stock TE buttons and complete that HORI EX mod using the stock TE buttons.

I don't know whether your buttons are clip ins or screw ins, but there's little difference. I'll explain with a clip-in.

Image
Disconnect the quick disconnects, and push in the sides to pop it out of the case. Or if its a screw-in, undo the nut and pop it out.

Image
Then grab a pen, a key, a small screwdrver, whatever you have on hand, and use it to slowly push the little tabs in the two windows. Slowly push them in and up. There's two,one on each side. This is for the button top.

Image
The button top will come out. Chances are that your crumbs and stuff are in here. Shake them out, dust, whatever.

Image
You can also remove the black section. There's two t-shaped sections. Pinch them in with thumb and finger, and push the whole black section up through the button.

Image
It's unlikely, but possible that some stuff got inside the microswitch. If you want to look, get a small flat head screwdriver and very carefully pop out these t-shaped clips.

Image
Once it's open, very carefully handle the parts inside - a spring, a ball and the white plunger. Give them a clean, and put them back in in the right orientation and order - grab the black part with the circular hole, and slide in the white plunger. It'll fit two ways and not fit the other two ways. Then put in the spring, with the wider end of the spring going into the plunger, and the thin end poking out the top.

Image
Then place the ball in, and clip the other black part on, lining up the two prongs on the black part with the slightly protruding part of the white plunger.

Then it's just a matter of putting it all back together.
