We've spoken about the negatives already mech, I'm not dismissing them. There are pros and cons to every approach. It's just exciting because a lot of this tech has been spoken about, but finally we are seeing it in practice in real games, not tech demos, that's what i'm excited about.

Here are some screens.

At this stage it's probably the biggest benefit for live arcade games because they have some crazy space limitations. I know epic are very keen on procedural texturing, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them better integrate it into the unreal engine, like they have with speed tree etc.

Nice and high res, but like almost all procedural stuff you lose out on the art.

Yeah those textures don't exactly strike me as very exciting.

You probably can't do any real-world type stuff with this, you almost certainly couldn't do something like PGR3 or GT4 with it. I believe you have to create the assets from scratch.

It would work a treat on storage hungry games like resistance though. BAM!

those textures were dismal lestat
if they were anything other than procedural i would be VERY dissapointed

the hype and how completely you've bought into this is disgusting - these claims are as stupid as anything sony's said in the past

One game is a flagship launch title the other is a cheap xbl arcade game. Guess wich one wouldn't have had a huge budget to blow on making game art/textures?

My personal take on this whole thing is it's a god send for the ridiculous size restrictions MS have to use cos they fucked up and splintered the userbase.

Really cutting edge amazing stuff to have textures not look like shit and fit under 50MB.

However as shown in the psat with the technology it generally isn't a good fit for most games because it lacks the unique look you get from an artists texture..

Unless there have been huge advances in designing these procedural textures that I am unaware of it's still a useless tech for _most_ retail games.

Kids like you had the ST, not the Amiga, and never recovered.

The gloves are off now, bitch. Amiga 500 lasted me a good 8 years I reckon, before it finally packed it in.

We had Attack of the Killer Tomatos, Space Invaders and Pac Man on ours Pep. I think it even came with a book with BASIC programmes you could write to tape yourself (standard at the time I guess). Did you ever get stuck into that?
