Though a really neat game, Super Mario Odyssey is an utterly underwhelming adventure for every long-term Super Mario fan in existence. Unless Cappy brainwashed you. In that case, you are a satisfied zombie customer now. No, seriously, only a zombie would find a healthy challenge in this pleasant but disappointingly easy Super Mario Walk-in-the-park. Sorry - Odyssey. 75/100

Was just playing it now :unbiased:

Firstly the game tries to force waggle controls followed by easy mode on you at the start. Thankfully I used my wits to navigate around that casual gaming horseshit.

The game itself...we've been mislead. The Mario model looks really nice but everything around it, the stages and enemies etc do indeed look like Sonic Adventure 2. Not the most visually impressive game ever that's for sure.

Oh no...my Super Mario Odyssey review compilation post is at the bottom of the previous page. :(

Let me repost for everyone to see.. :)

Eurogamer: Essential

There is nothing like a new Super Mario to remind you that there is no other studio that can make games like this. Jump on a tomato in the Luncheon Kingdom and watch how it splats out into a sizzling hot pool of sauce; ride a Jaxi, a stone steed as fast as a rocket, and watch the way it scrabbles frantically at the ground as you try to rein in its boundless speed. Then release it - whee! The happy revelry that has gone into the making of this nonsensical world is infectious, while the return to the open design of Super Mario 64 has freed all that gleeful energy in a sloppily explosive burst. To many people, Mario is video games. To play Super Mario Odyssey is to remember why that is.

EDGE: 10/10

Like Breath of the Wild, Odyssey is a new entry in a long-running series that belies its age with sprightly invention, taking big risks with an established formula, and having all of them pay off handsomely. Mario might be getting on a bit, then, but a dinosaur? This astonishing adventure proves he's anything but.

IGN: 10/10

Mario’s games have been around for almost as long as game consoles have been a thing, but thankfully, he’s always evolving. We rarely get the same Mario twice. Super Mario Odyssey delivers on that ongoing promise of originality and innovation: It distills the venerable series’ joyful, irreverent world and characters and best-in-class platforming action, and introduces a steady stream of new and unexpected mechanics. It’s all spun together into a generational masterpiece.

Gamespot: 10/10

Odyssey is sustained beyond its major milestones not only through colorful worlds and hidden challenges, but through the sheer joy of controlling Mario, who's never felt more responsive or dynamic in action. Even with everything new that's been introduced, Nintendo's forward-thinking platformer retains the series' classic handcrafted appeal, which is even more impressive when you realize how densely packed each kingdom is. Mario's latest outing is big, bold, and bursting with new ideas, and like Breath of the Wild, is another instance of Nintendo going above and beyond to redefine our expectations. It's a shining example of refined creativity, and another crown jewel for Switch that is without equal.

EGM: 10/10

A mix of the nostalgic, the fantastical, and the wonderfully bizarre, Mario’s latest adventure provides more than a dozen tantalizing playgrounds to explore. With hundreds of collectibles, Kingdoms full of delightful details, and secrets waiting around every corner, Super Mario Odyssey is bound to keep players exploring long after the credits roll.

Video Gamer: 10/10

It's extraordinary, really, that after all this time a new Mario game can feel as fresh as any that preceded it. Cappy is a revelation, exploring Kingdoms is bliss, and Super Mario Odyssey is a masterpiece.

Cubed 3: 10/10

The wait is over; the pinnacle of 3D adventures has arrived in the form of Super Mario Odyssey. It beggars belief just how much Nintendo has packed into this latest outing, without compromising the core Mario goodness of the past. Just as with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the Mario series has now reached a special new level of greatness that will be hard to surpass in the future. The Nintendo Switch is fast becoming the hottest platform, crammed full of sublime quality gaming experiences like this fantastic new escapade.

The Sixth Axis: 10/10

Super Mario Odyssey is bursting at the seams with creativity, as Nintendo plays with new ideas while also paying homage to their long history. Cappy's abilities are a perfect compliment to Mario's own, and there's a wonderful silliness and humour to their adventure as they visit a string of contrasting kingdoms that just beg you to find the secrets hidden around every corner. Simply put, Super Mario Odyssey is a masterpiece.

God Is A Geek: 10/10

Full of happiness, an antidote we all desperately need, flawlessly designed, addictive, and just incredible. This is platforming perfection.

Game Rant: 10/10

In almost every way, the game acts as a love letter to fans of the 3D iterations of the Super Mario franchise. From the spectacular Kingdoms and all of their hidden secrets to the minute nods to past ventures and friends, the entirety of this adventure is a joyride from beginning to end – with countless hours that can be invested into the title long after the narrative has been completed. The formulaic changes have helped modernized a genre that has long been dormant, which is an immense feat in and of itself.

Pocket Gamer: 10/10

Super Mario Odyssey is the Italian plumber's most freewheeling 3D adventure yet, but it's also somehow his most accessible. There's just a whole bunch of instantly gratifying stuff to do here, whether you're dashing across a timed obstacle course, playing beach volleyball, blasting tanks to smithereens, catching a rabbit, or figuring out how to reach a remote island.

It's invariably possible to find something meaningful to achieve within minutes of booting the game up, yet it can suck you in for hours at a time, and its deepest secrets will have you perplexed deep into the hefty post-game stretch.

Giant Bomb: 5/5

Super Mario Odyssey is very much a 3D Mario game with its roots set in Super Mario 64’s exploration and sense of discovery. Each kingdom is absolutely packed with charm, clever objectives, gorgeous visuals, a stellar soundtrack, and a huge variety of ways to have fun. One moon would have me leaping across tiny platforms with pinpoint precision, and the next would have me cheering up a businessman by dressing like a clown. At no point did I feel like I was checking boxes just to up my completion percentage. Even now that I've collected every moon and purple coin in the game, I still want to play more of it. It’s one of the most joyous and entertaining gaming experiences I’ve had in a long time, and it stands tall among the all-time great Mario games.

Games Radar: 5/5

It’s easy to say Odyssey is the most glorious of Mario’s adventures to date. And not to mention adorable. Have you seen all of his outfits? Nintendo’s ability to jam secrets and side-quests into every pixel continues to astonish and means I’ll be playing Super Mario Odyssey for many Moons to come.

USgamer: 5/5

Super Mario Odyssey honors much of what makes other 3D Mario games great, plus it adds plenty of its own flavor to the Mario stew thanks to its capture mechanic. Mario Odyssey can keep you busy for hours and hours if you want it to, and you probably will. I can't think of a moment when I wasn't enjoying myself while journeying with Mario and Cappy.

Trusted Reviews: 5/5

It carried ginormous expectations, but somehow Nintendo has managed to leapfrog over the bar by a huge distance. Offering the most satisfying gameplay experience of any Mario game to date.

You’ll become obsessed with collecting outfits and Power Moons, and fall in love with every kingdom you visit. Nintendo has had a wonderful 2017, and is rounding it off in style with the best Mario game you’ve ever played.

Game Revolution: 5/5

While I may be far removed from the days spent playing Super Mario World as a kid, completing it for the umpteenth time and still finding new secrets with each playthrough, experiencing Super Mario Odyssey transported me back to that same sense of wonder I felt when I first discovered the Star World, or when I used my cape to accidentally stumble upon a secret key that opened up a brand new level. Nintendo has delivered everything I could want in a Mario game, before adding things that I didn't even know I wanted. The end result of their efforts is a true modern masterpiece.

Guardian: 10/10

New sidekick Cappy could have been just another annoying sidekick, but its inclusion only adds to the playfulness of Nintendo Switch’s first Mario adventure.

Telegraph: 10/10

The pleasure of Super Mario Odyssey comes in the constant promise of something new. It is, in many ways, the greatest digital holiday you will ever take. An idea that Nintendo is very much aware of with the ever expanding wardrobe of travelling outfits, detailed maps for each Kingdom laid out like travel brochures and souvenirs that you can buy up with stage-specific coins. The variety, invention and sheer generosity on each trip is bewildering, an affirmation that Nintendo in this kind of exuberant form are absolutely peerless. A trip to savour. And not a second wasted.

Metro GameCentral: 10/10

A joyful celebration - and evolution - of the Super Mario series, that encapsulates all the fun and creativity of video gaming at its very best.

Really disappointing.

Lines up with my time with the game so far. Will complete the game of course but I think Wolfenstein 2 might be the better game.

That's it...i'm going to say it! :P

If you're planning to miss out on both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey (what are now guaranteed to be the two best rated videogames of not just this year - but two of the best rated videogames of the LAST MOTHERFUCKING DECADE)...then you have NO right to call yourself a gamer!

There's a reason why the Nintendo Switch is now a global phenomenon and so damn popular that it's outselling both PS4 and XB1!!! Purchase a Nintendo Switch - and do it NOW!!! (and when you're done with Mario & Zelda...pick up Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, etc...in addition to looking forward to next year's releases including Metroid, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Kirby, Pikmin, Yoshi, etc).

I feel like pointing out that your current avatar is a celebration, without irony, of Mario dancing. I make lulz at today's Sanic along with everyone else. My current avatar is a p**sed off Tails. My last avatar was this:

I gave a genuine impression of Mario games and suddenly you're linking things, bolding things, quotes up the butt. BIG LETTERS, very secure! You could have acknowledged my points and just said that what doesn't work for me works for you, but I truly think you can't do that. Such an easy counter was literally handed to you because everyone likes Mario. But instead you went into the world's least necessary damage control and wrote a reply that looks like a spammy advertisement. Why? Probably the same reason you went for such a poor defence in the first place: actually discussing the weaker points of a new Mario is a risk you are completely not willing to take. Let me guess, there are none, right?

I can sit here and discuss, with really easy to follow examples, what is or isn't poor about so many Mario titles. I don't think you can. And I still think they're very good games; I'd look forward to and hope for the fundamental shake up that your quotes mention. But there are 2 problems with all the wank you quoted... First, if there's one game reviewers never s*** on, it's Mario. They don't need to be critical, there's no competition. And two, my impressions are simply what I see. If the suggestion of more task after task wasn't there to be seen I wouldn't see it. Mario 64 had the same thing. Your impressions meanwhile are cherry-picked quotations chosen to feed your need to ... God knows what. Of course you'll love the game anyway, but I doubt you'd dare fault it, no matter what.

Had about an hour bash this morning on my new Mario Odyssey Switch bundle and love what I’ve played so far. Haven’t used waggle as of it as I played on the Switch unit itself but it’s so diverse even within the 2nd world! Looking to be everything it’s been hyped up to be!

10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 1 01 010 10 1 010 10 10 10 should be the quote for all future marios.
The ones doing the nitpicking need to understand one thing: if the ratio of shit to good is high then you should structure your review to be generally negative. If the ratio is low then focus on what it did right mostly and make your text match the bloody scrore. You don't have to be that one 'cool' guy that tries to get attention by deliberately acting pissed at the game for a tiny flaw and then say everyone else that gave it high scores is full of crap because the tiny flaw outweighs the amazing shit. It's ok to agree with the nintendo fans that mario is still the greatest platform game series way above crash and sonic and Banjo Kazooie and Giana Sisters. People who play platformers from all systems are the kind that you can trust. If mario can be beaten tell us what game did that for an example. I want to play it. It's not going to be Sonic Adventure with its forced camera angles lol

Now that mario is done Ihope they focus on metroid. Samus was ignored last gen for donky kong sequel. Make it open world like BOTW please.._._Stop stalling. And don't let Jim Sterling anywhere near it where he will complain how its not inclusive for casual gamers who want to buy loot boxes to make the game easy for thier grandmother to beat it quickly on speed runs. Kids and casual gamers have to grow up and learn the value of hard work and trying everything before crying on miiverse how the game 'must have a bug in it' because they didn't know to morphball to slip into pipes. Sony turning to switch for help:
Scary times for tomby. Perhaps sony and nintendo combine to make the Nintendo Playstation project after nintendo dumped them all those years ago.

Carts > CDs.
Mario 64 >>>>>> Crash bandicoot.
Switch > Vita
Smash Bros > Playstation All Stars

First microsoft releases minecraft to nintendo systems. Next Sony ports Horizon Zero Dawn to Switch. Only a matter of time.

The battery won't last 12 hours though. That is why nintendo need to get capcom to port arcadey fighting games like street fighter III and Street Fighter IV ultra. Great for short bursts of play. Portables are still held back by insufficient power. I told them nintendo should have invented a backpack with a huge battery in it that lets you play for longer time. Like the ones the ghostbusters wear.

I got my copy of Super Mario Odyssey (and my googly eyes Mario hat of course :D ) from EB earlier today. Looking forward to heading home in a few hours and playing it all night long!

GeneraL CyberFunK - both Mario & Zelda require software updates (will only take a couple minutes to download) - so make sure you get that sorted out before you go (likewise, the Switch's most recent hardware update) in case you have internet problems abroad.

Also the Nintendo Switch is fully compatible with power banks/portable chargers - so if you have any around the house, you may want to pack that with you if you plan to non-stop play a graphically intensive game like Mario or Zelda for over 4 hours.

Wait Jasper, those scores don't matter. Don't you know we should only trust reviewss from PC tards like Candy Arse that gave zleda a 7 and doesn't know shit about good game design and thinks witcher 3 is better than everything?

Oh wait I forgot this is the guy that thought Mass Effect Andromeda was better than BOTW hehehe

So glad EA is going down the shitter and dying off due to lack of interest in polishing their games before release. Even thier own staff is turning against them:
This is what happens when you don't respect your own customers. The staff is too embarassed to show loyalty to you. Wolfenstein II and Mario Odyssey is a ray of hope in a fucked up industry.

Not even Ms is worried, because they know after people get bored with the 2 "must have" games, they'll be back playing the steady flow of quality releases on their Xbox.

Hence why spending $500 on one is just a waste of money, Nintendo blew their load.

Well to be fair nintendo seem to only be interested in making family friendly stuff that appeals to a wide audience. They specialise in that thing and it is the equivalent of comparing a specialist like a boxer to a MMA fighter. A boxer who is Pro will defeat a generic MMA guy in a ring with boxing rules (that's why MS can't beat nintendo in platform genre which is what nintendo is known for) but a MMA guy in a MMA fight will destroy a specialist who only knows how to strike. (in the case of MS they win by having more diverse genres but I think most nitnendo fans know that and buy two consoles nowadays)

I would rather nintendo make polished masterpieces that stay in your memory than rely on dozens of third party games that are just expansion packs to old games we already played last gen. That is one of the reasons I try to play everything. Once in a while a game comes along that nintendo is shit at and they can't make that type of game. But for the things nintendo is good at I want them to focus all that energy on the thing they specialise in and not try to be western game company. Diversity in game types is important if you are multiplatform gamer. Which I assume most people on this board are. Nintendo will have to stick to what it knows if they want to survive. So that's why I always laugh when I hear critics talk about how nintendo is doomed because they don't have enough third party titles on the platform. Bullshit! most of you will just buy those third party games on the high end platform so it works out better for retail industry to stock less overall games of higher quality than multiple copies of a single game on different platforms. That doesn't mean third parties don't benefit nintendo but from a consumer perspective we always go for pc or high end console to play those third party titles. Porting them to switch is only for those who only have Switch but not another console. (they have no options so they complain about not enough third parties on nintendo. This doesn't apply to guys like you who were never going to buy those games on nintendo anyway. It matters only to those who are too poor to buy pc or second console which in the game community I think is a minorty)

BTW metroid will most likley be a must have game too. Along with the next zelda which will be made for Switch. (remember Zelda BOTW is a Wii U port to Switch which means whatever comes after that will be made with Switche's power in mind and not Wii U)

Also Xenoblade 2 is looking good. (ditching the western style openworld RPG feel for JRPG style story driven game. Many people preferred the original Xenoblade over the Wii U game)

WTF? :?

Nintendo haven't even released a Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Metroid, Smash Bros, Donkey Kong, etc. There's still also the inevitable Zelda & Mario Kart being developed from scratch for the Nintendo Switch (BOTW & Mario Kart 8 on Switch are Wii U ports). Also BTW...that mere Mario Kart 8 port for Nintendo Switch is Amazon's BEST SELLING VIDEOGAME OF 2017 ACROSS ANY GAMING SYSTEM.

If anyone blew their load early...it was fucking Microsoft who released the only two IP's people give a shit about (Halo & Forza) way too soon and way too early in the XB1's lifespan.

Face it lestat, The entire Xbox brand is now an utter disaster! Xbox One is a failure selling like shit (just like Xbox One X will), and just as importantly...Microsoft's flagship software (Halo, Forza, etc) have sold like shit! :?

In fact...Mario Kart 8 on Wii U alone has DOUBLED the COMBINED sales for Forza 5, Forza 6, and Forza Horizon 2! How humiliating that a trio of next generation Xbox One Forza games have been outsold by a karting game with inferior graphics/resolution/frame rate...and running on TEN YEAR OLD HARDWARE!!!

Image

Fucking Super Mario Maker on Wii U (a 2D platformer creator application that cost Nintendo chump change to develop) HAS OUTSOLD HALO 5 (and not by a little, but by MILLIONS more copies of SMM sold over Halo 5).

The Xbox One is as much of a flop as the Wii U - but at least Wii U games actually sell! 8)

Mark my words...XBOX ONE X IS GOING TO FAIL!!!

In defense of Wii U:
The Dreamcast might have died, but Wii U failure made them stronger. They have gone super saiyan thanks to getting pummelled last gen. Sony and MS are scared I reckon. The people on this board all thought mobile phones would make dedicated handheld game devices dead but so long as the best developers support a dedicated game device, consoles can still survive. Switch is here now and allows people who like the last gen games able to play them on the go now. That might not mean much to you guys but I like home console titles on small screen.

Imagine if sega could make a comeback from the DC failure like nintendo did with Wii U failure? You be playing Shen Mue 3 in ultra HD by now.
