PC modded Skyrim is where it’s at, unless you want to play the downgraded version on the toilet. In other words, why would I want to play a 6 year old game that I’ve owned twice again?

There is no way the Switch is going to outdo PC Skyrim at anything.
Except for low res 6 inch portable gaming. Ie., precisely what Skyrim is about.

No haven't you heard! The Switch version with NO mod support, 30fps, 896x720 resolution and waggle controls is MUCH better than 4K, 60fps fully modded PC Skyrim!

Re: NINTENDO SWITCH CROWNED TIME MAGAZINE'S GADGET OF THE YE
I had no idea so many games run sub HD on switch, Is this to combat the bad battery life of the system? Tegra was never renowned for its power efficiency, which is why it kinda flopped in the tablet market.I just don't fully understand why Nintendo allowed this to be a trend. Nearly all Wii U games, even the most visually rich ones, ran at native 720p on a less powerful GPU, with few exceptions (Splatoon 1, MK8 and Zelda use dynamic resolution).
In fact, it's quite the opposite. Nintendo even encourages developers to go to resolutions such as 854x480 in order to absorb the performance difference between handheld and docked.
Problem is, since you are so close to the screen, anything below 720p tends to stick out quite a bit. I noticed this first when I played the Splatoon Testfire, where the game running at 540p looked dull, washed out and very pixely.
This seems to be a trend in a lot of 3D Switch titles. Mario + Rabbids was 600p, which honestly ruins the art direction for me. Xenoblade 2 is reported to be sub-HD on the Switch handheld with framerate issues, despite Xenoblade X managing native 720p on Wii U (Yes, I know Xenoblade X used some rendering shortcuts). Rocket League can drop to very low resolutions in handheld mode. Some developers like Ripstone even favour going for sub-HD in favour of lighting effects, which seems baffling to me. LEGO games like Marvel Superheroes are also below 720p on Switch, whilst they were native 720p on the Wii U!

Re: NINTENDO SWITCH CROWNED TIME MAGAZINE'S GADGET OF THE YE
It’s not too bad on the switch screen because of the pixel density, which is higher than Vita, but on TV yeah, it can be noticeable when you’re not playing at native resolution. Lately I’ve been playing mostly as a handheld. It’s pretty handy having it on sleep mode where you can instantly resume your game. Then when the battery’s nearing depletion just pop it in the dock to charge,

If I pick up a switch, I'd want one with a 7-10nm tegra, the 20nm tegra in use now is a bit old hat and overdue for a die shrink. Especially when ps4/xbox are both using 14-16nm finfet.

I have to admit.. out of all 3 consoles.. the Switch has surprised me the most. I am REALLY keen to see how Xenoblade Chronicles 2 reviews.

GeneraL CyberFunK...with this being your very first Nintendo gaming system, what were your impressions of Super Mario Odyssey & The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild?
Also you should consider getting Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, and Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle (all three are absolutely fantastic games). If I was forced to pick one of the three - it has to be Mario Kart 8 Deluxe!

Re: NINTENDO SWITCH CROWNED TIME MAGAZINE'S GADGET OF THE YE
it is the best portable FPS on the market right now which means a lot to portable gamefans. Minecraft on Switch is the best portable version of MC.Candy Arse wrote:So Doom on Switch at 30fps with N64 quality textures at a low resolution is superior to the PC version. Sure thing
MS should start allowing Halo franchise to come to Switch now that they are choosing multiplatform strategy. (ie try making money form the sale of software over restricting their own games to onw platform. Just have timed exclusive stuff for the XBOX platform to encourage fans to double dip when PC version comes out later date like what Rockstar did with the GTA5 port to PC with delay)
Killzone on PS Vita had the crown for best portable FPS before. I wish Prey was on Switch. Maybe after they do Wolfenstein 2? Bethesda's reward for supporting Switch early is they can take advantage of the fact that no other third party has anything out to compete with them. Just like in the early days of the original Xbox with Morrowind. No other company had a pc open world RPG on the platform and for years they had a head start over the others. This made it easier for them to stand out in a crowd because they were the only ones that made that stuff.
Looks like it's paying off with Switch as well. Lot of people are hungry to see more titles like this to nintendo platform. (since nintendo don't do that)

Yes bring out a Switch Pro model. Given how many different 3DS iterations exist I think a mid-gen Switch would be ok. Just give early adopters of the Switch some free GBA roms as compensation for being an early adopter just like they did with the original 3DS launch. (I still have my free games from that deal loaded in memory)
Would love to see older retro classics on Switch at 720 P 60FPS in portable mode. Soul Calibur, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Ultra SF4, Blazblue etc..(all the arcadey fighting games)
The novelty in taking tiny cartridge versions of older games appeals to me. Switch is the portable Sega Dreamcast . Only a matter of time before Capcom hears me and brings out Street Fighter III Third Strike to the Switch. They can't afford to ignore the fans of retro games. They can pimp resident evil revelations all day but they know given the battery life of a portable machine which games are most suited to it. hint: all those bloody fighting games you made in the past on a nintendo platform which can handle *perfect arcade ports now that 3DS is going to die off.
*no need to sacrifice the nice background detail this time.

Re: NINTENDO SWITCH CROWNED TIME MAGAZINE'S GADGET OF THE YE
So far I've only really sunk serious hours into Odyssey. And I've enjoyed it in the sense that they have shown some pretty meticulous attention and love to making the game chock full of content. Graphically it is great though given it's style.. it doesn't appear to push the system that much but I have seen some draw in here and there.. but no biggie. I have refused to play Zelda anymore until I finish Mario and also finish Zero Horizon Dawn... that's not to say that I don't want to play it though. I'm just being staunch in that I want to properly engross myself in it rather than having half a dozen games on the go which I feel can diminish the impact and also can cause me to lose track of the game.Jasper wrote:GeneraL CyberFunK...with this being your very first Nintendo gaming system, what were your impressions of Super Mario Odyssey & The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild?

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 looks amazing though. I haven't watched too much of it.. but aesthetically it ticks all the right boxes.
I have no interest in Splatoon or Rabbids though.. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is on my radar but I'm happy to pick it up second hand or when it is cheaper.. simply because I already have a backlog of games and there is no sense in adding to that pile.

Re: NINTENDO SWITCH CROWNED TIME MAGAZINE'S GADGET OF THE YE
Xenoblade 2 looks good. but according to eurogamer it's less open world than the last game and more focused so this might mean it's better to those who want story with characters that emote and music more suited to JRPG fanbase.
Soundtrack is great. Here is a compilation of battle music: Nice merging of rock and orchestrial music. Don't care too much for the kiddy characters but nothing'sperfect.
The music reminds me of YS and Etrian Odyssey. IE cool music you can hum to while you while you fly to work in an armored suit eqiuped with an overheated launch model xbox360 as jet pack attachment:
Please nintendo pressure these guys to do a sequel to XB Chronicles X. I prefer the western style freedom over the linear rpg. It might be because I am a fan of the transforming mechs too. More adult looking characters seem more appealing to me as well. You can still give them emotions and drama, just don't fall back on anime tropes too much. (anime watchers are going to lynch me for that but thee guys need to grow up. The sci-fi anime of the 1980s with more gritty realism (what they call the 'real robot' genre) is the stuff I grew up watching and much prefer. Not the newer stuff. (compare bubblegum crisis from the 80s with the purposely dark scifi horror look to the more modern bright and cheery 90s one and you can see what I mean: I love the more dystopian future of movies from that time period more than the cartoony type animes which have designs that were made as ads to sell kids toys. Japan needs to go back to the past like nintendo have and rethink the way they do things currently and whether it is better or worse. (it's not easy because people get into habits and don't know they have it due to pressure to work fast and please an existing fanbase instead of go with a unique vision)

Re: NINTENDO SWITCH CROWNED TIME MAGAZINE'S GADGET OF THE YE
It appears Time Magazine aren't done salivating over Nintendo...
First they chose the Nintendo Switch as one of the 25 BEST INVENTIONS OF 2017.
Then they chose the Nintendo Switch as the BEST GADGET OF 2017 (as well as the SNES Mini as the 6th best gadget - ahead of the Xbox One X).
And now they have crowned The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as the BEST VIDEOGAME OF 2017. Super Mario Odyssey came in at 2nd best, and Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle came in at 8th best.

It's what non-gamers/waggle fans call them.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 looks like a massive letdown after X.
Back to anime baby mode Eurogamer mentioned that visually it is NOT good.

Re: NINTENDO SWITCH CROWNED TIME MAGAZINE'S GADGET OF THE YE
Well now that I've clocked Odyssey, I'm back on the Wii U fucking around in Breath of the Wild whilst waiting for another game to get on Switch. Odyssey started out a bit average, but as soon as you get into the tail-end of the game and the post-game stuff, it really shines.
I was tempted by DOOM, but really don't see myself playing portable with those joke joycons, so might end up finally picking up an Xbone to play it properly.
Excited to find out exactly what the BotW final DLC chapter is. Any reason to load up that game is a good thing. If Nintendo weren't such fuckwits, they would let me transfer my save from Wii U to Switch and have another easy full price game sale. Oh well.

In fact according to Time Magazine's list of the top ten best gadgets of 2017...the Nintendo Switch AND the SNES Mini are both superior to the Xbox One X.
Here is Time's gadget of the year ranking in order...

9. Apple Watch 3
8. Xbox One X
7. Amazon Echo (second generation)
6. Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) Classic
5. Samsung Galaxy S8
4. DJI Spark
3. Microsoft Surface Laptop
2. Apple iPhone X
1. Nintendo Switch
