I received a text message earlier today that my local EB Games is having a midnight launch tomorrow for Super Mario Odyssey.

You can see if your local store is having a midnight launch or launch day early opening here...

More importantly, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is out on Friday!

Who cares about, in Jasper's own words, the sequel to the awful Mario Sunshine? Can't wait to kill more Nazis!

As good as Odyssey looks, it also looks like exactly the same experience as Galaxy, which I never touched again the moment I killed the final boss, once.

Really well designed, really good use of tech to create fun ideas, really good control... and then just task after task. Once that Mario gameplay sets in, I start feeling like it's just a long string of level segments that tell me exactly what to do instead of giving me free play. In many parts I'd struggle to understand how other people didn't also notice how lame it felt seeing how pre-designed your experience is. Patronising probably a better word. All the way back to Mario 1.

Odyssey looks good... but for me at least, also really looks like more of the thing that I see in most main Mario titles. Less play than ticking off jobs.

1. Everyone knows you're a Sega jihadist and a fanatic Sonic fan. You trashing Super Mario Odyssey is not the least bit surprising.

2.. Your description of Super Mario Odyssey is utterly WRONG. This game is in fact the most exploratory & adventurous Mario platformer in history - with a lot of comparisons being made to Zelda: BOTW.

Make no mistake - this is a revolutionary game and the first true 3D Mario platformer in 16 years (I have watched a bunch of leaked videos of Kingdoms yet to be revealed by Nintendo, and what i've seen is fucking INCREDIBLE and a first for not just Mario, but in any videogame in history).

Here's an article from Games Radar (who refer to Super Mario Odyssey as the most transformative Mario platformer since Super Mario 64) to reinforce just how WRONG you are... http://www.gamesradar.com/theres-a-lot- ... -since-64/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Mario games always feel wonderful. Odyssey, however, is something more. The last time Nintendo re-thought, from the ground up, how a Mario game should work, it resulted in one of the greatest games ever made. Odyssey promises the most transformative change this beloved series has known since Super Mario 64.

Super Mario Odyssey, like Breath of the Wild, is powered by the desire to break its own rules, to playfully thumb its nose at the conventions of its heritage. Like Breath of the Wild, it already appears exceptional.

Nintendo has broken the rules of Mario in dramatic, fundamental ways. While the layout of these spaces may feel familiar, if you try to traverse them using the traditional Mario moveset – run, jump, bounce – you won’t get far.

I'm REALLY trying to hold back on revealing some of the spoilers I have learned about Super Mario Odyssey (some of it is absolutely MIND BLOWING)..but here are some slight tidbits...

There's a shitload of costumes in this game... :)

Image

And the 2D levels are fucking incredible and rich in nostalgia - and there's so many of them... :)

On Amazon America - Super Mario Odyssey in PRE-ORDERS ALONE has outsold the total number of XB1 and PS4 consoles sold this year, in addition to outselling every single XB1 & PS4 game released this year (Horizon, Forza 7, Destiny 2, Gran Turismo Sport, Resident Evil 7, Nier, The Evil Within 2, Nioh, etc)...

Nintendo needs to let this guy review games:
The good reviewers want to cover the titles but nintendo is stopping them. It is time nintendo accepted that the internet is real and that it is 2017.
We got them to remove the region coding nonsense now the next step is all the reviewers got together to talk to nintendo about relaxing their restrictions on coverage to new games. The Switch is doing well, everyone has bought the SNES mini and they are rolling in dough because the Vita is dead. Now how about celebrating by not being a dick and making things easier for people to cover things? It is almost as if PC gamers are running nintendo now and trying to stop them become too awesome because it might stop people playing Mario Odyssey on PC instead of on the Switch.

There's a far greater chance he's played more Nintendo games than you have, faux fan.

You're good for hype but awful for actual gaming discussion.

Still waiting for you to post a pic of your Nintendo collection :btw:

Eurogamer: Essential

There is nothing like a new Super Mario to remind you that there is no other studio that can make games like this. Jump on a tomato in the Luncheon Kingdom and watch how it splats out into a sizzling hot pool of sauce; ride a Jaxi, a stone steed as fast as a rocket, and watch the way it scrabbles frantically at the ground as you try to rein in its boundless speed. Then release it - whee! The happy revelry that has gone into the making of this nonsensical world is infectious, while the return to the open design of Super Mario 64 has freed all that gleeful energy in a sloppily explosive burst. To many people, Mario is video games. To play Super Mario Odyssey is to remember why that is.

EDGE: 10/10

Like Breath of the Wild, Odyssey is a new entry in a long-running series that belies its age with sprightly invention, taking big risks with an established formula, and having all of them pay off handsomely. Mario might be getting on a bit, then, but a dinosaur? This astonishing adventure proves he's anything but.

IGN: 10/10

Mario’s games have been around for almost as long as game consoles have been a thing, but thankfully, he’s always evolving. We rarely get the same Mario twice. Super Mario Odyssey delivers on that ongoing promise of originality and innovation: It distills the venerable series’ joyful, irreverent world and characters and best-in-class platforming action, and introduces a steady stream of new and unexpected mechanics. It’s all spun together into a generational masterpiece.

Gamespot: 10/10

Odyssey is sustained beyond its major milestones not only through colorful worlds and hidden challenges, but through the sheer joy of controlling Mario, who's never felt more responsive or dynamic in action. Even with everything new that's been introduced, Nintendo's forward-thinking platformer retains the series' classic handcrafted appeal, which is even more impressive when you realize how densely packed each kingdom is. Mario's latest outing is big, bold, and bursting with new ideas, and like Breath of the Wild, is another instance of Nintendo going above and beyond to redefine our expectations. It's a shining example of refined creativity, and another crown jewel for Switch that is without equal.

EGM: 10/10

A mix of the nostalgic, the fantastical, and the wonderfully bizarre, Mario’s latest adventure provides more than a dozen tantalizing playgrounds to explore. With hundreds of collectibles, Kingdoms full of delightful details, and secrets waiting around every corner, Super Mario Odyssey is bound to keep players exploring long after the credits roll.

Video Gamer: 10/10

It's extraordinary, really, that after all this time a new Mario game can feel as fresh as any that preceded it. Cappy is a revelation, exploring Kingdoms is bliss, and Super Mario Odyssey is a masterpiece.

Cubed 3: 10/10

The wait is over; the pinnacle of 3D adventures has arrived in the form of Super Mario Odyssey. It beggars belief just how much Nintendo has packed into this latest outing, without compromising the core Mario goodness of the past. Just as with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the Mario series has now reached a special new level of greatness that will be hard to surpass in the future. The Nintendo Switch is fast becoming the hottest platform, crammed full of sublime quality gaming experiences like this fantastic new escapade.

The Sixth Axis: 10/10

Super Mario Odyssey is bursting at the seams with creativity, as Nintendo plays with new ideas while also paying homage to their long history. Cappy's abilities are a perfect compliment to Mario's own, and there's a wonderful silliness and humour to their adventure as they visit a string of contrasting kingdoms that just beg you to find the secrets hidden around every corner. Simply put, Super Mario Odyssey is a masterpiece.

God Is A Geek: 10/10

Full of happiness, an antidote we all desperately need, flawlessly designed, addictive, and just incredible. This is platforming perfection.

Game Rant: 10/10

In almost every way, the game acts as a love letter to fans of the 3D iterations of the Super Mario franchise. From the spectacular Kingdoms and all of their hidden secrets to the minute nods to past ventures and friends, the entirety of this adventure is a joyride from beginning to end – with countless hours that can be invested into the title long after the narrative has been completed. The formulaic changes have helped modernized a genre that has long been dormant, which is an immense feat in and of itself.

Pocket Gamer: 10/10

Super Mario Odyssey is the Italian plumber's most freewheeling 3D adventure yet, but it's also somehow his most accessible. There's just a whole bunch of instantly gratifying stuff to do here, whether you're dashing across a timed obstacle course, playing beach volleyball, blasting tanks to smithereens, catching a rabbit, or figuring out how to reach a remote island.

It's invariably possible to find something meaningful to achieve within minutes of booting the game up, yet it can suck you in for hours at a time, and its deepest secrets will have you perplexed deep into the hefty post-game stretch.

Giant Bomb: 5/5

Super Mario Odyssey is very much a 3D Mario game with its roots set in Super Mario 64’s exploration and sense of discovery. Each kingdom is absolutely packed with charm, clever objectives, gorgeous visuals, a stellar soundtrack, and a huge variety of ways to have fun. One moon would have me leaping across tiny platforms with pinpoint precision, and the next would have me cheering up a businessman by dressing like a clown. At no point did I feel like I was checking boxes just to up my completion percentage. Even now that I've collected every moon and purple coin in the game, I still want to play more of it. It’s one of the most joyous and entertaining gaming experiences I’ve had in a long time, and it stands tall among the all-time great Mario games.

Games Radar: 5/5

It’s easy to say Odyssey is the most glorious of Mario’s adventures to date. And not to mention adorable. Have you seen all of his outfits? Nintendo’s ability to jam secrets and side-quests into every pixel continues to astonish and means I’ll be playing Super Mario Odyssey for many Moons to come.

USgamer: 5/5

Super Mario Odyssey honors much of what makes other 3D Mario games great, plus it adds plenty of its own flavor to the Mario stew thanks to its capture mechanic. Mario Odyssey can keep you busy for hours and hours if you want it to, and you probably will. I can't think of a moment when I wasn't enjoying myself while journeying with Mario and Cappy.

Trusted Reviews: 5/5

It carried ginormous expectations, but somehow Nintendo has managed to leapfrog over the bar by a huge distance. Offering the most satisfying gameplay experience of any Mario game to date.

You’ll become obsessed with collecting outfits and Power Moons, and fall in love with every kingdom you visit. Nintendo has had a wonderful 2017, and is rounding it off in style with the best Mario game you’ve ever played.

Game Revolution: 5/5

While I may be far removed from the days spent playing Super Mario World as a kid, completing it for the umpteenth time and still finding new secrets with each playthrough, experiencing Super Mario Odyssey transported me back to that same sense of wonder I felt when I first discovered the Star World, or when I used my cape to accidentally stumble upon a secret key that opened up a brand new level. Nintendo has delivered everything I could want in a Mario game, before adding things that I didn't even know I wanted. The end result of their efforts is a true modern masterpiece.

Guardian: 10/10

New sidekick Cappy could have been just another annoying sidekick, but its inclusion only adds to the playfulness of Nintendo Switch’s first Mario adventure.

Telegraph: 10/10

The pleasure of Super Mario Odyssey comes in the constant promise of something new. It is, in many ways, the greatest digital holiday you will ever take. An idea that Nintendo is very much aware of with the ever expanding wardrobe of travelling outfits, detailed maps for each Kingdom laid out like travel brochures and souvenirs that you can buy up with stage-specific coins. The variety, invention and sheer generosity on each trip is bewildering, an affirmation that Nintendo in this kind of exuberant form are absolutely peerless. A trip to savour. And not a second wasted.

Metro GameCentral: 10/10

A joyful celebration - and evolution - of the Super Mario series, that encapsulates all the fun and creativity of video gaming at its very best.

Was just playing it now :unbiased:

Firstly the game tries to force waggle controls followed by easy mode on you at the start. Thankfully I used my wits to navigate around that casual gaming horseshit.

The game itself...we've been mislead. The Mario model looks really nice but everything around it, the stages and enemies etc do indeed look like Sonic Adventure 2. Not the most visually impressive game ever that's for sure.
