MS to stamp out 'overseas' XBL accounts

Post by amba »

Sauce
In short, when you log into Xbox Live from an IP address that does not correspond to the correct country for a given account, the account will get flagged for deletion or banning. To check where your IP is located you can go here for example, and read the WHOIS-information that is known for your current IP address.

Not fucking happy about this shit.

If they want to enforce regions in live, how about giving us a fucking option to only connect to australian games in match making. It sucks that everytime you use match making you get hooked up to some fucking yank server with all that lag.

MS community rep said on GAF it will only be US Gold accounts, probably for copyright issues with their new TV/Movie downloads.

It's all about choice. And gaming.
Currently playing: Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition (PC), Far Cry 4 (PC), FIFA 23 (Series X)

That is a good point, they admit they can do it yet still don't give the option. I bet this cutting off users is being funded by what they pay for live too.

The other thing is what happens if you travel and take your machine with you?

This is stupid.. If they want to enforce regions do it the way Sony/Nintendo are doing it - US acc needs US credit card to buy things (but you can have the acc without one), and so on.

From Xbox-scene:
*UPDATE* According to gamasutra.com Microsoft will not be banning the accounts, but rather block the non-allowed downloads:
Despite earlier reports, the dummy accounts are not being banned, but exclusive content downloads are being blocked to European users. According to a brief statement from Microsoft's Chris Paladino on the Gaming-Age fan messageboards: "Details aren't all in yet - but I do know for a fact that we are not banning the accounts. We are blocking downloads in cases where gold accounts are being used to gain U.S. content in foreign marketplaces."

Any Xbox Live account being accessed from an IP address not corresponding to the indicated country for a given account is in danger of having content downloads restrictions.
