Noob Questions
Does your one month of free Xbox Live Gold start as soon as you sign up, or can you sign up and start the free month at a later date?
it starts straight away, even when you create a silver account.
Achievements. Do you get anything for achieving them?
just gamerscore points I think, but it's good when a game has hard achievements, feels rewarding to get them (survive 1 million in geowars really is an achievement)
Do you need a credit card for buying stuff through Xbox Live?
you can buy marketplace points in stores these days
Can I register an Xbox Live account now on PC before I get a 360 (like I did for the PS3)?
i'm pretty sure you can, check xbox.com
What sort of ping would I get? I'm in WA with a 1500/265 ADSL connection.
dunno about that one, a good host is needed though, pretty much all games are p2p.
Is a Play & Charge kit necessary?
no, but you really should get one anyway.
My TV is old and only supports 50hz Am I screwed?
no, but some games require a 60hz compatible tv, I suggest you find a monitor, cheap HD, no 50hz dramas.
What sort of deals are available now/will be available during Q1 2007? (bundled games etc.)
dunno
Anything else I should know/need to do to get the most out of the Xbox 360?
don't limit your friends list to ranchers, find some aussies and add them to your friends list, plenty of WA gamers out there too (mcwrang is one), ranchers won't always be into the games you like, it's a bandwagon thing
also, you really want a better TV, it's extra cash but it's worth every cent, 5.1 is also important imo.
THANKS!

As soon as you sign up.
Achievements. Do you get anything for achieving them?
A massive ego.
Do you need a credit card for buying stuff through Xbox Live?
No... you can get prepaid cards at places like JB and HN.
Can I register an Xbox Live account now on PC before I get a 360 (like I did for the PS3)?
I think so, yeah... check Xbox.com.
What sort of ping would I get? I'm in WA with a 1500/265 ADSL connection.
Doesn't really matter, as all games have a host (which is why you'll see a lot of requests for Australian-only games). But that connection will be fine for getting stuff from the marketplace.
Is a Play & Charge kit necessary?
Nope... it's probably cheaper to get a wall-charger and at least 4x AA rechargable batteries.
My TV is old and only supports 50hz Am I screwed?
Some games only support 60Hz. I don't think there's a huge amount, but they're there. To get the most out of it, you definitely want something at least widescreen, or a VGA cable for a PC monitor.

OK, I'm in the middle of Account Creation at http://www.xbox.com.au, I just used my Hotmail account and it accepted it and now it's asking for a Gamertag. If I keep going will my 1 month of Xbox Live Gold start now or when I first connect an Xbox 360 online?
What's the deal with the Gamer Zones (Recreation, Pro etc.)? Does it matter which one I choose?

Maybe there is no code then and you get given 1 month xbl when you choose to upgrade? Im sure thats what happened to mine when I first signed up. I know Silver is free anyway, but the gold shouldnt start instantly. I could be wrong, wont be the first time, wont be the last.
