Port Forwarding Advice

Post by Texas »

As Blotts, Nath and Kanga can attest to I am still having voice issues with XBL. I have set up the port fowarding (for UDP 88, UDP 3074 and TCP 3074) and killed the firewall crap on my POS D-Link (hey, it was free) for the appropriate ports, but the connection test still says 'Moderate'
It's almost like the ports are stealthed...

Any ideas before I just blow my top and go get a Lynksys?

What other devices do you have on your network?

If your router allows you to save IP's for a specific device... allows you to force an IP on a device you should be able to save those ports for that IP address.

Whatever the router is I am currently using is a POS. You can't specify an IP address for a specifc device, so even though you assing ports to an IP, it doesn't mean that only that device is allowed those ports.

So in my example... if I turn on my 360 first wahoo I am open as all hell, but if my housemate turns on his first even though the ports are set for the IP of my 360, he gets the ports for some crazy reason and I am closed tighter than a very tightly closed thing.

So, I am guessing there might be something else on your network that is using the ports and because of that it doesn't give access to your 360 for those ports.

As a test, shut everything off that is connected to your router and then only turn on your 360. See what the result is.

But the best advice I can give is check he xbox website for their recommended routers, then check online reviews for those routers and see which ones are good.

FWIW I get 'Moderate' but still get fine voice chat and very little lag, even over 512kb/s connection.

Ueah, Grey, I have assigned IP's to all my devices, and I have tried it with only my 360 connected and it don't make 1 jot of difference. This POS modem/router gets a bad rap all over the net anyway (not just whingepool) so I'll probably suck it up and get a Lynksys anyhow.

yeah you might not get lag but you can bet you're making the connection shit in game for everyone else.... ie people have trouble joining, people not being able to hear other people....

How so? Only way I'd be making it shit is if I was hosting, I would've thought.

And yeah, I'd tried getting rid of that 'moderate' with port forwarding etc., but had no luck. Maybe that's why I had so much grief in joining Forza 2 a while back...

Fuck it, I may as well get a new modem too ahaha... time to retire my 5+ year old Billion. Suggestions in this thread (I'm guessing, on behalf of Tex) are welcome :) (in particular, for wireless ones, too)

As I said before, check this list for a recommended router, and then check some online reviews to see which ones fit your needs and if they are actually any good.

I'm just harkening back to the last time I tried to play F2. PGR4 has always been fine (for me) though!

But I'm eyeballing the Billion 7300G(or maybe N... don't really need it though). Only about $80.

Like a lemming I continue to buy DLink Routers and always have some issue or another. I tend to put the XBOX into DMZ. It seems to alleviate most of the issues most of the time.

I have a cheap ol billion 7300g. Does the trick nicely.

Not really interested in "n" even though "g" is fucking useless for media streaming. I just put cable.

Chaos: That's the Billion I'm eyeballing ATM... well, between that and the 7401 (which is apparently a little more solid and about $50 more).

I'm surprised the 7300 is even available anymore.

Anyhow it lets me VPN into work has wireless for my laptop interweb browsing/PS3 online and works well with XBL.

Can't fault it really.

I would recommend the 74xx series if you can spare the extra $.

They are much more robust and reliable. Especially if you ever use BT or other P2P software.

Thats just Billion's in general rather than a specific model. Your distance from the exchange isnt something that the majority of people would need to be concerned about though.
