Any snake experts?

Post by Sveky »

It was 4:20 am fumbling around in the fruit bowl i noticed a black snake after removing a bunch of banners. Initially i thought it was a fake snake one of the kids had thrown in but when i looked closer i could see it was moving and its tongue flickering. The only way i can assume it got in there is that it stowed away in the bunch of banners as i cant imagine any other way it could have gotten in there. Anyway scares me to think the kids have been grabbing bits of fruit all weekend all the while a potentially deadly snake has been camping out in my fruit bowl.

I took a pic ( sorry for bad quality i was already running late) does anyone know what kind of snake it is ?

Might be a Black Mamba. Quite friendly, make good pets unless you've seen Kill Bill.

That or a fruit snake.

Might be a very little red belly black snake.
If so they are quite venomous.

How the fuck did it get there? Crazy!

I have heard that snakes are often found in banana plantations, they put bags over the bananas when they are still on the tree and snakes get stuck in there, but your fruit bowl is a long way away from the plantation, maybe it just made its way in from outside? You live in the city?

Another thing with red belly black snakes, when its dry they will move into suburbia in search of water, usually follow drains... its possible, just make sure mum isn't outside :)

I wondered the same thing. So much so that I lost interest in the snake.

@pilonv1 i live in Colo Vale (NSW) a bit of bush around particularly the neighbours place. I cant really believe he managed to get in there any other way apart from stowing away in the bunch of banana's. I know these things can be Houdini mother fuckers but given the location of the bowl i dont reckon he came in from outside.

Your first step is to burn down your house to make sure the snake that infestation is dealt with. If that doesn't work try the suburb.

With small black snakes the only way to really tell is to check it's belly. RBBS usually come up the sides a bit. So if it is flat you might be able to see it.

Most garden snakes are green or brown.

I can understand abbreviating bananas when talking because of illiterate kids and refugees etc bit typing banners when it has the same amount letters is just wierd.

It should be banas.

Are you going to video your trapping of the snake and setting free?

What an anti-climactic ending. Was hoping for a wicked battle involving flame throwers and molentov cocktails.

I dunno how you buy bananas without seeing that, must've been a big bunch... lucky it didn't bite you!

I dunno if it's a red belly, the head is different but I've never seen a small one, adults have a small head.
Pretty scary, kiddies hands have been in there.

Only a baby I know, but it almost has that spoon shaped head with the flat nose which is the first way to identify a non-venomous species from a venomous one. Second is the eyes - commonly, poisonous snakes have the slits, while pythons have round pupils.

Saw a brown snake in my backyard a few weeks ago... he got startled pretty easily and cheesed it. I thought they were aggressive as fuck but whatever. Neighbours say they're pretty common these days in the eastern foothills. Will try for a photo next time.

Was there really any danger of the kids reaching into the fruit bowl?
I know mine wouldn't touch it.
