Driving along today with my IPhone connected to my car stereo enjoying my songs on shuffle. All of a sudden a song that wasn't mine came on, and it was horrible, it was U fucken 2!!! How the hell did this shit get on here?? Apple has put a virus on my phone, wait actually an entire U2 album is worse than a virus.

Let me say at the outset that I'm pretty ambivalent about U2 myself. They've never been one of those bands that I've absolutely had to have the latest album from. In fact, Songs of Innocence is the only U2 record I have in my iTunes library.

But the inordinate amount of actual anger directed at Apple and U2 over this is so disproportional to the actual event, I've started to wonder about the mental state of some of those complaining. It's really been off the charts.

If you fall into that camp, let me speak very plainly: I have no sympathy for you. I have trouble thinking of a more self-indulgent, "first world problem" than saying "I hate this free new album I've been given."

U2 had the gall to name this and their hopefully now defunct next album after William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience, and while I’m sure Blake’s themes are adequately explored with all the depth and lyrical nuance of “waah hey ooah yeah yeah baby” and such … frankly I just don’t care. I’m not interested.

And then Apple go and infest my iDevices with it. It’s not that they offered me something for free that I simply don’t want, or would actually pay money to not have – it’s that they made it automatically show up in my list of artists / albums without asking and then made me use iTunes on the computer to get rid of it (because you couldn’t do it straight from the iPhone / iPad prior to them putting up that link unless you wanted to hide all your non-downloaded purchases, which I don’t want).

It wouldn't have worried me so much because I actually don't mind U2. But if it were a band or someone I despised, like Bieber, I'd be furious too. It's the principle! So I wonder of the people who think it's not a big deal, how many of them despise or don't mind U2?

I don't like it at all and for the exact reason you've stated. I'd fucken literally want to sue if I found Bieber forced onto my devices without my consent. I liked U2 but do not like them at all now. I don't like that they've cut a deal that bypasses actually selling the album to fans and just assumes that if you own an iProduct, you will want the album. And when was it suddenly ok to ignore that a lot of people have strict data limitations and send non essential data to your device without choice?

In the end it's a simple case of delete, forget and move on. But you can't go around claiming to be a champion of gay rights or be some kind of anti racism campaigner and not think this is a gross example of a violation of basic human rights in the first world.

Out of curiosity... has anyone actually listened to the album or read reviews about it? It's U2.. but is it any good?

Don't get me wrong.... I think it's stupid that they did it.. but then again.. companies have been making us download stuff for a while now where the actual data may not be exactly in line with the product and/or services we want.

Perhaps I am being somewhat smug in that my ipad air didn't get the album because it hasn't been switched on/charged in a while now.
