Agreed. Was on Windows Phone 8 for 2 years. Currently on Android but hoping to go back to Windows Phone (if it's still around in ~1.5 years!)

I didn't mind Windows 10 mobile in the short period I used it. Some very neat improvements over 8.1. It just wasn't stable enough to keep using yet.

Anyone know how to get sub-folders in the start menu? I don't know the proper name for them, but for example based on how Windows 7 did it AND how the games were installed I should have (for example):

EA Games\Command and Conquer Generals\Readme.txt
EA Games\Battlefield 2\Readme.txt

etc

But instead Windows 10 dumps everything in the EA Games folder on the Start Menu (so I've got EA Games\Readme.txt twice because there's one for C&C and one for BF2 and there's no way of knowing which one is which without opening them). The folder is huge and confusing (so big I have to scroll through it) rather than broken up into logical sub-folders which, like I said, is how I installed them).

My solution for now has been to pin the actual game.exe to start but for older games this looks ugly as hell (although even the MS Store icons look bad in this screenshot haha):

Image

It's really only an issue for older games or retail games like GTAV that for some reason aren't on Steam/Origin/GOG but it offends my sense of order and "neatness".

So sub-folders in the Start Menu are no longer supported in Windows 10 for some reason so I re-arranged everything so that every game has it's own folder. Not ideal but neater than the way it was before. And I got rid of the pins in the above screenshot 'cos they're ugly.

First major update/upgrade/service pack has been released: https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperi ... ble-today/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Highlights:
Performance in everyday tasks, such as boot time now nearly 30% faster than Windows 7 on the same device.

With Cortana, you can use your device’s pen to just scribble a note in the Cortana Notebook and Cortana will recognize the phone number, email address, and even physical address to help you set reminders. Cortana can also now keep track of your event and movie bookings too, sending you helpful reminders to know where to go and get there on time, plus the option to book and track an Uber. We’re excited to make Cortana available in Japan, Australia, and Canada and India (in English) with features and experiences customized for each market.

Microsoft Edge offers improved performance and security, along with tab preview, which allows you to hover over your open tabs and get a preview of what’s on those websites without leaving the page you’re on. Microsoft Edge now syncs your Favorites and Reading list items across devices so you can easily get back to the content you’re interested in most. And, Cortana will now notify you of the best coupons from your favorite retailers such as Staples, Macys and Best Buy when shopping in Microsoft Edge.

And much more with improvements to Mail, Calendar, Photos, Groove, Xbox, Store, OneNote, Solitaire, and more!
And in classic Microsoft style, I've had a mixed experience with installing it. It installed fine on my OG Surface Pro (mucked around with Cortana, like all of these voice recognition things it still seems really gimmicky to me), but it failed to install on my new beast gaming PC, and now no longer appears in Windows Update on it :| I'll give it a week or so and see what happens.

I checked my Windows update and it said it was queued. I restarted to kick it off and it was the only update among the other two queued that didn't install ('error'). I kicked it off again manually, left it overnight and it installed ok. Aussie Cortana sounds like she's from the Gold Coast. :D

My Surface Cortana keeps wanting me to switch my speech language to hers and I haven't even tried her on my desktop.

But I'm not likely to use her on either anyway.

All my PCs are now running the 1511 update.

Live tiles seem to be working a lot better for me now. They actually update regularly like they're supposed to (except for Mail where deleted emails are still showing up in the Live tile as unread).

Will have to run 3DMark again sometime to see if there's been any performance improvements.

Someone I know has a windows phone made by LG ( I don't know the exact model) but I need to know which version of Windows it uses. Where would I look in the phone to find out. I don't have access to the phone so I can't try myself.

I didn't like how the whole process began with "Downloading" (ok), then "Checking for updates" (.. ok), then simply "Please wait" with no indication of how long I was meant to sit there before I could press the "Yes start please" button. Turned out that was about 40 minutes more of Windows phoning home what I had for dinner. Windows 8's install pulls those shenanigans too, telling you to wait as if it's just given up inventing excuses, but at least that was after the installation had begun, so you weren't trapped waiting to click something.

Once Win10 was up and running, a few niggles. My GPU and laptop keyboard both needed drivers installed manually. But most annoying is the fuzzy text. Had this problem with the 8.1 upgrade also, but this time I haven't been able to fix it perfectly. It was definitely a bit screwy too; twice reporting I had set my text scaling to 175% (I hadn't, and it clearly wasn't), and even now when I have things mostly ok, certain applications (Eg Steam, Device Manager) are still fuzzy. I'm over fiddling with it, since Windows is Windows and every time you touch something it demands a restart.

Also! Every time there's a new version of Windows, Windows Explorer gets even more junk cluttering up the navigation pane. This time, OneDrive, external drives, and even Dropbox get their very own headings. It's a bit dumb having your external drives appear twice on the left (once under My PC, and again as their own section), but Dropbox was the most annoying because it is so far immune to registry tweaks. My solution to this is to stop using Dropbox. It's not even that relevant anymore anyway, but then how did they get so into Windows 10's bed that Dropbox exclusively gets its own Windows Explorer heading? Dropbox yes. OneDrive, obviously. But not Google Drive. No-one ever uses that.

More whining, the start menu, full screen or menu, doesn't appear as fast as Windows 8's start screen. Bit of a shame.

On the positive side though, virtual desktops finally, that's a good thing. But my favourite change is the improved ability to arrange windows on your screen. I am *always* pushing one window to the far left, then another to the far right, so they do that automatic screen dividing thing. It's pretty much the only thing I really miss too when using another OS.

But in Windows 10, as soon as you push the first window to one side, all your other windows are quickly displayed for you in the remaining space, so you just click one and the job is done; both windows dividing the screen. For me that's about the most useful thing ever. I just like how it's done; you don't have to remember it, you don't have to go out of your way to use it. It's always there and it's just a plain improvement. Even better, now you can drag into a corner and a window quarters your screen. Great!

And really, those 2 little changes make me happy enough to accept the random fuzzy text.

Two finger scroll has been inverted on my laptop. An Asus thing. Having said that, 3-finger commands are working better now, nice.
The new Start menu is better, but I wonder why the icons are smaller and fuzzier than in Windows 8.

I disabled anything that looked new and fancy, including Cortana. I'm just tired of everything I do being sent to someone else's server.

So my windows 10 desktop build shat the bed over the weekend, I have no idea what happened but basically my start menu stopped working and I couldn't get into the settings app, both user accounts were locked out in this funky state, interesting enough older win32 control panel and apps still worked but the system was in a broken state. Tried several online fixes with no success, even tried a refresh/reset which just failed at 1%.

In the end I had to bite the bullet and do a fresh install, luckily the PC was still usable to transfer/backup files. Spent all last night rebuilding the box, the old build had been through several upgrades so there were was a lot of bloat/crap hanging around, my OS drive went from 120gb of data to 40gb after the rebuild and reinstall of apps(games/media live on separate partition). System definitely seems more responsive on startup/shutdown. Probably should have done this in the beginning, oh well.

I lost my start menu and the following fixed it for me:
Reinstall Windows apps

Launch the Task manager and open a new PowerShell window with administrative privileges, as explained above.

When the Windows PowerShell window opens copy the line below and paste it into the PowerShell window by simply right-clicking at the blinking PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> prompt, or by pressing [Ctrl] + [V] on the keyboard:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Wait until the app download and installation process completes — ignore any red text that appears — and restart Windows.
Reads like you were more broken than me with locked out local accounts though.

That has worked for me in the past but this time it didn't work, I did push my pc overclock to 4.7Ghz a few days prior, I'm guessing that the overclock wasn't cache stable and corrupted a critical config/part of the system. I've put it back to 4.5ghz which was stable for a long time. Also after the build 10586 update my shutdown/sleep times were taking ages, like several minutes. It's all good now, the box was overdue for a spring clean. :)

perhaps cockhead was a bit harsh. It just felt a bit friendlier than "pedantic uppity little snob" or something of the like.

Yeah, you're taking all the corrections the wrong way. I'm too lazy to bother explaining how you could take them, and since they will probably continue it's your choice if you want to keep being insulting about it.

My high school results always looked like this, maths/science 95, english 50. So I admit my English writing skills are poor because I don't care much for it, my day to day work rarely involves writing(I'm writing in other languages c++/python/c#/java etc), pretty much posting on forums is the only time I do write and yes lazy bad habits have crept in, thanks to Deef I have paid more attention to not write "should of".

Anyway back on topic, I realised over the weekend I got lucky and could have lost some important data, my backup routine is pretty poor. So I've setup the nas to be a backup store, scheduled windows to do weekly system image and user backups. I have an external 4tb drive coming for the nas to back that up and to top it off I'm finally embracing cloud storage to backup the family photos offsite. I should have done it sooner but sometimes you need that push/scare to get you going.
