You do need a ground with more seating, Ambrose.

The thing with these poor two team football towns is the fanatical fanbase and media tracking their player's every gesture. It must be hell to live in that fishbowl environment. It would add a lot of pressure on top of the pressure to train and play for an AFL club. In saying that I'm not excusing Kerr's behaviour.

As for the Bombers this year I was encouraged by a few passages of running play during the 4 point loss to Carlton. Really last season was appalling and something Essendon supporters are simply not accustomed to. Previously the most disappointing season I'd endured was '92. What a shit year. Of course we know what happened the year after and while I'm a long way from drawing parallels between now and then I wouldn't rule out a massively improved season this year. Lloyd's return to form is vital and I hope he can keep his elbows down for the duration of his recovery. His inclination to lash out in an illegal fashion is an ongoing worry.

It's a delicate time for the Bombers...

They are trying to bring on the kids... but then rely on a selected # of oldies to keep them as far up the ladder as they can (mainly Lloyd, Fletcher, Lucas, and Hird). The problem is that if they lose one or two of said experienced players... it all comes undone in terms of scoreboards.

It's also pretty much unfamiliar territory for the Bombers... who have relied on Sheedy's shrewed trading to largely avoid having to rebuild from scratch. But over the last few years there have been few clubs willing to trade with Windy Hill so they now have little choice but to turn to the draft.

There are concerns that Essendon doesn't have the personel to fully utilise the draft (they really haven't needed to) and that the Club's proud culture is preventing them from making the hard decisions needed to change the flow.

Compare this to Hawthorn who have taken a different approach in trading / retiring everyone until they had virtually nothing (except a bag of draft picks)... bring in a completely new coach / medical / support staff system... suck up a few years at the bottom... swallow your pride as you gorge on draft picks... and then start a slow climb back up.

Carlton have done a similar thing... but that was forced upon them.

It will be fascinating over the next few years to compare the approaches... and see where this all ends up.

I'm actually a Carlton supporter and i was at the game last sat night. I was extremely impressed with our kicking accuracy to team mates (2nd half missed a few easy goals though  ) but at the end of the night it was last years 2 bottom teams plus a few young kids against eachother trying to regain some hope and faith in themselves after last years poor efforts. The Blues played well, and i'm excited for the future of Carlton. (Although in 2005, we displayed great skill to win the pre-season cup, and then finished last)!
Essendon were promising too. Like Carlton, they still have some young bloods to find there feet, Lloyd looked a little lost, Mal Michael's will get used to the team's game plans, and if everything gels together well
9minimal injuries, fit team every week) i believe the Bombers can make the top 8 this year. They looked very quick running with the ball through the centre, but once they are used to the intensity of AFL, some of those young kids may be stars.
And Monfries was great. Very underrated player who could possibly be one of Essendon's all time greats!

Carlton skipper files court order against brother
March 01, 2007

NEWLY appointed Carlton Football Club captain Lance Whitnall has accused his brother Shane of making death threats against him.
Shane and Tammy Whitnall were escorted by six Australian Federal Police officers from Melbourne Airport to Broadmeadows Police Station yesterday after returning from an interstate holiday.

At the Melbourne Magistrates' Court today, the pair consented without admission to a 12-month intervention order taken out against them by Lance Whitnall and his wife Rhiannon.

Shane Whitnall told AAP the family feud began when his wife did not attend a birthday party for Lance Whitnall's son last month.

The disagreement escalated when Shane and Tammy Whitnall's two children - Exavier, aged two, and Jett, aged one-and-a-half - were not invited to a family trip to Melbourne Zoo last week.

"After a minor disagreement, the AFM (aggrieved family member, Rhiannon Whitnall) and her husband received several abusive and threatening phone calls from the defendant and his wife Tammy Whitnall," said the intervention order, obtained from Shane and Tammy Whitnall.

"The defendant (Shane Whitnall) stated that the AFM's husband would end up 10 feet under.

"The defendant also threatened to bomb the AFM (Rhiannon Whitnall) mother's house."

The intervention order means neither Shane nor Tammy Whitnall can go near Lance and Rhiannon Whitnall's Macleod home, in Melbourne's northeast, or their workplace.

Outside court today, Tammy and Shane Whitnall said they intended to seek a counter intervention order against Lance and Rhiannon Whitnall.

Tammy Whitnall claimed she had received a derogatory text message from Lance and Rhiannon Whitnall about her late father, who died in 2000.

Lance Whitnall, appointed Blues captain this year after making his debit with Carlton as a teenager in 1997, said he regretted the matter had escalated this far and it was a private, family matter.

Shane Whitnall said he had written off his brother 100 per cent.

"Maybe sorry is too late, maybe he should have looked at the embarrassment that he put my family through yesterday by putting the federal police involved at the airport with my wife and two young children," he told reporters.

"(We were) reasonably close, yes. To the extent that I would make communications with him on events, such as the captaincy and such, but as of now I will be no longer speaking to him as a brother.

"There were messages going both ways from both parties ... it's a two-way street."

Whitnall, 28, joined Carlton in the 1996 draft under the father-son rule, because his father Graeme played 66 games for Carlton between 1974 and 1979.
Jerry Springer

What a bunch of Nuff-Nuffs! And this bloke was the 'clear choice' to be Caaaaarlton's new captain? I know Fev is a fuck-up, but...

Does anyone know where I can find out who finished in the top 10 (or 5) in each club's best and fairest last year? The AFL website is absolute garbage, I can't find anything :(

Why are there more Carlton supporters than Hawthorn supporters in Tasmania? I think it's pretty sad that Hawthorn were booed as they entered the ground.

In less depressing news, AFL clubs are desperate to catch up with the trendsetting Eagles:
Herald Sun wrote:The game changed, maybe forever, at Subiaco in Round 17 last year.

West Coast, desperate to break down the flooding tactics of Adelaide, bamboozled the Crows' usually granite-solid defence by shooting off 227 handballs -- the most recorded in the AFL.

Adelaide buckled. It was the moment the Eagles announced they were the real deal for the 2006 premiership.

From there, they handballed their way to the flag, averaging 183 handballs per game -- 28 more than any other team during that time.

...

So why the change? What does the handball happy tactic, if executed properly, do to the opposition? Teams that prefer flooding back will have to decide how much latitude they give opposition midfielders.

With the ball flying around by hand can a team let running players dart about unchecked?

The defenders are then thinking: "Do I stay with my man or do we run at the ball carrier?"

It makes the flooding defence uncertain -- and given it clearly worked for West Coast, there's no shortage of imitators.
Source

It's slightly amusing watching the untalented hacks playing for Carlton and Hawthorn trying out the tactic, and listening to the commentators bitch and whine about how ugly and scrappy incompetent players make it look.

Oh, you must mean the little practice match at Subi, where a bunch of no-names from Essendon would have got a huge thrill from beating the reigning premiers. Good luck to them.

If I had to say something from this pre-season has annoyed me (apart from losing both games) it would be our inaccuracy. It was our biggest weakness last year and it looks like nothing much has changed. I hope Woosha doesn't prove to be as stubborn this year as he was last year until the last 3 finals.

Of course there are more Carlton supporters in Tasmania, There will also be more Essendon and Collingwood supporters here too.

As for the Hawkes being booed it could have something to do with the deal the Tas gov't did to secure them playing here for the next x amount of years instead of spending that money on something more useful/needed and also working towards a real Tassie team?

Yep. I'm not sure what's worse though, losing last night or losing the 2005 NAB Cup (or was it Wizard Cup back then?) to Carlton. Who finished last.

Or maybe last year was worse when we only won a single preseason game. Sure we won the Grand Final, but that that's not important, is it?
