Yes Fevola is a pretty base animal. My girlfriend was lucky enough to be on the receiving end of a Fevola advance one night. He didn't leave a favourable impression.

Shit Pep that's really shocking! What a prick... If he wasn't such an integral part of our team, i'd piss him off straight away. Maybe it's people like him that are dragging the Carlton Football Club down even further...? Honestly, what goes through their minds when they do shit like that? You'd think that after a great year, he should be honoured to play for the Aussie team, yet he goes and fucks it all up with the same old stupid behaviour.

Highly-respected ABC radio broadcaster and sports administrator Wally Foreman passed away on Thursday after suffering a heart attack earlier in the week.

A legend in Western Australian sporting circles, Foreman's voice was well-known to football fans with his career in radio spanning more than 30 years.

Former colleague Gerard Whately spoke of the sadness of his passing felt by all those who had come into contact with him over the years.

"It is a devastating shock to all of us who've worked with him - just the suddenness of it - it's hard to find the right words, but we're all shocked," Whately said on Friday.

"He was much-loved in Western Australia and he was a familiar voice right around the country. He was a stalwart of the ABC in Perth and his passion for not only footy, but also tennis and hockey saw him go to numerous Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games.

"It probably came after his career highlight where he called all four of the Eagles' finals and called his first AFL Grand Final back to Perth. He was the voice at the end when the siren sounded signaling their ultimate success.

"He did say to me before it that at least he'd be able to say that he did one and I know that he enjoyed it immensely and it's a great pity he won't get to do any more.

"He was a good man, a thoroughly decent, entertaining person who was tremendous company. He could tell a million stories from his time at the Institute of Sport and the ABC - you were completely at ease in his company."

Foreman joined the ABC in 1975 after beginning his career in journalism at The West Australian newspaper three years earlier.

In addition to his expert football commentary, Foreman covered a range of major sporting events including four Olympic Games, five Commonwealth Games, international cricket and Australian Open and Davis Cup tennis.

Foreman became a highly-regarded administrator after being named the West Australian Institute of Sport's first director in 1984, a position he held for 17 years before returning to full-time sports broadcasting with the ABC in 2001.

His honours include being made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2003, named West Australian Citizen of the Year (Sport) in 2000 and receiving the Australian Sports Medal.

Wally Foreman was 58 years-old and is survived by his wife, Lyn, and two sons.

http://www.eaglesflyinghigh.com/, the Eagles fansite has rated the 2006 team. I won't bore you with the whole list, but the top three deserve recognition:

1. Chris Judd
There's few words you can use to describe Chris Judd that aren't a synonym for "brilliant". For instance, words and phrases like "superlative", "outstanding" and "bloody awesome". At only 23, there's little more for the great Judd to achieve, with his elevation to Premiership Captain in season 2006.

While Judd might have a few more quiet games than Cousins, his best is the best in the land, as shown by the near perfect 49 votes against the Lions early in the season. In the end, Judd is just capable of so much on the football field that mere mortals can only applaud from the sidelines. Even better, he is outstanding at standing up under extreme pressure, as he has done in every final for the last three years.

The sheer brilliance of Judd makes him definitely a worthy winner of the 2006 EFHPOTY. Congratulations Juddy.
2. Ben Cousins
As always, the Eagles Mr Reliable came through in season 2006. The only player to poll votes in every single game he played, Cousins was pipped at the post for the EFHPOTY award in the Grand Final.

Some of Cousins' efforts in 2006 were stunning, notably his lone effort in the second Derby where he could have come into contention for the Medal in a team that lost by nearly 10 goals and his lead from the front brilliance when everything was on the line in the Preliminary Final.

Cousins is often still described as the "spiritual captain" of the club, and on field he shows everything you'd want - determination, desparation and at times pure class. While 2006 might not have been quite as stunning as 2005, it was another brilliant season - and this year it resulted in a premiership medallion.
3. Quinten Lynch
Ah Lynchy... has anyone else ever become a cult hero after shaving off a porn star mo before? If there's anything that was clear in 2006's EFHPOTY, it was that the average Eagles fan absolutely loves watching a big Eagle forward make a position their own.

Oddly enough, a couple of seemingly lacklustre performances to start the season had many people questioning why the Lynch experiment at full forward was continuing, but by season's end it was absolutely clear that Lynch was the most improved player in the West Coast squad. Not only did Lynch become the first Eagle tall to kick five goals in a game since he jagged it in his rookie season, he also managed to become only the third Eagle to kick eight goals in a game (after Sumich and Cummings) when he achieved that feat against the Lions at the Gabba.

There's no doubting that having Lynch as a focal point has been a boon for the Eagles, hopefully it can continue on in 2007 with the Glovernator making full forward one position that we can pencil in each week.
The Man. The Glove. The Legend. Quinten "The Big Unit" Lynch
At our best, there is no better team in the competition. Not even close. Just ask Adelaide. Back-to-back in 2007

I think I've watched every single Eagles YouTube video. Someone has even put Lynch's first goal on there   The best one though is the one I posted yesterday, and the one that shows the last 5 minutes of the match. I still yell and carry on like an idiot when I watch it

I still don't own the Grand Final DVD though  It was in my hands yesterday and due to a lack of funds I had to put it down :( I've been looking for the Victory Pack too (all 4 finals + season highlights disc) without luck :(

And then I'm going to have to see if I can order the Geelong game (I felt a premiership was inevitable after this game), both Adelaide games, and the Carlton and Sydney games. And maybe both Brisbane games too just to see Judd dominate Aka in the first one, and Lynch booting 8 goals in the second. I wonder how much the entire season will cost?

As an Eagles fan, this was the greatest season of all time, even though it wasn't our first premiership, and even though we lost both derbies. So many huge comebacks, being written off before the season even started when Cousins was stripped of the captaincy, and again when Adelaide were crowned premiers in August before we destroyed them. Hunter vs. Adelaide in the Preliminary Final. Lynch booting 65 goals (12 during the finals series at 3.0 a game) and still not being considered a full-forward, Chick's tackle, smother, handball, shephard combo to assist Mr. September Adam Hunter (who else?) in the Grand Final. I had to laugh when I was browsing a footy forum, and the thread was name your most hated club and player. So many Adelaide fans named the Eagles and Hunter :D

And next year we should be even stronger. I wish the 2007 season started tomorrow :(
"Get up Buddy. Get up Buddy Franklin" Sorry Wallsy but if you mess with with the big boys, expect to be owned. It's funny, after this hit, Cousins wasn't targeted anywhere near as much as he was previously 8) Beau Waters is another success story. He missed all of last year with a groin injury after making his debut in 2004, got hit by a taxi at the start of this year ( ) before being right up there on Grand Final day, taking some huge marks in defence. And he put Franklin back in his box, of course.

Waters > Leo Barry

I better stop typing before this beats GameHED's post length record :P

Ambrose... glad to see the passion still burns...

The Eagles will be favourites next year... not sure how much they will improve (they didn't do anything to address their deficiencies on the trade table)... but they will definitely be the ones to beat.

Awesome side + home ground advantage = certain top two finish.

In terms of competition... Sydney will be up there again (Everitt experiment pending)... but a ruckless Adelaide may be dropping out of the top four with a pair of cement shoes.

As for Buddy... don't worry... he got up.

Ignoring the improvement that always comes from a young squad, I expect significant improvement from Ashley Hansen at CHF, as well as fierce competition for the small forward role between Armstrong, Sampi and LeCras. Seaby played well when he had to be the number one ruckman in Cox's absence, so hopefully he can step up and ruck for 50% of the game rather than 25% like he did this year.

Plus you have to look at the players that missed out. A fit Nicoski would be in our best 22 (our first 18 actually), and Graham, Staker and Rosa played for most of the year. Sampi showed glimpes of his brilliance, and then you have the youngsters who will keep players on their toes like Hurn, Morton and Priddis.

I think Sydney will again be our main challenger. Hopefully they won't be underrated anymore, they are one hell of a team stacked with talent.

Apart from Sydney (and a dodgy draw), the only thing that will prevent us from going back-to-back is the old premiership hangover (see also: 1993), but I think we have the mental toughness (lesser teams would have crumbled given the scrutiny over our criminal escapades and the huge leads we handed several teams this year) and the burning desire amongst the player group to go all the way again in 2007. There are still too many doubters we have to prove wrong. Again. :)

The hangover effect is always hard to quantify... a little bit of complacency from the Premiers... and an increase in desperation from the challengers.

I imagine opposition sides will try and adopt a Sydney like approach to taking on West Coast... but I'm not sure how many other sides have the balance across the board to pull it off.

In terms of WC improvement... it will be all about the forward line.

Here we go again ;)

a) I'd move Lynch to play as a mobile CHF. He's wasted as a useless marking target from the goalsquare. I guess it depends on how big his engine is. Think like Reiwoldt.

b) Develop another leading target from full forward (probably not Hansen). Maybe someone is a similar role to Mark Williams at the Hawks (and no - you guys can't have him). Or try and set up a system of resting the ruckmen down there.

c) Find a new Phil Matera. Ditch Sampi and try and fast-track one of the others... LeCras looked useful. The problem is that despite the number of entries into the 50 there are few crumbing opportunities being created (see my discourse with Ambrose over the last three months). Sampi ain't the answer though.

I wouldn't expect the Eagles to improve much from their youth... purely from the point of view that their drive is from established players already. Sure - they will develop some deeper depth... and set themselves up for the medium to long term future... but I don't think their best 22 for 2K7 will be any better than this year (mind you - that was still pretty much the best their was).

Part of the best game review ever:
Then, in the second term, with Sydney finding a bit of fluency, Big F***ing Quinten strode to centre stage, dispensed contested marks, glove throws and f bombs in roughly equal amounts, and kicked the team towards glory.
and:
The Ugly

So they’re the best AFL team in the league, minor premiers, major premiers, winners of possibly the best Grand Final in AFL/VFL/NFL/NRL/STFU history. What do you do next? Have a crack at the best post Grand Final celebrations in AFL history of course.

Just to refresh your memory, since we were all too busy dancing, yelling, singing the team song and putting our fists clean through Wanchai bar ceilings at the time- things started promisingly, with Woosh simultaneously hugging and shaking the dear life out of Cuz. The Glove taught us that profanity is always fucking appropriate, which was followed by a brief interlude which involved pwning some kiddies, giving the Herald Sun a controversial issue which they addressed with their usual high standards of hard hitting, highly researched journalism along the lines of (actual quote I swear) “Chelsea Heights reader Lucas Vogt said the players… . Meanwhile Judd just stood there, took it all in and smirked like a,…well.. like a guy who is captain, premiership player, Brownlow Medallist, Norm Smith Medallist, dating a super model, earning big bucks and generally a good deal cooler than you. Yes, you.

Then it was on to the ’92 reenactments, with Embley playing Jako in the ‘Everybody knows….’ role, and a month long drunken orgy where goldfish were tasty snacks, Norm Smiths were available on eBay, and Chad Fletcher lay gagging on his vomit in Vegas.

Victory had never tasted so sweet.

Yeah, I was surprised about Mal Michael! That's a massive pick up.

My girlfriends brother got picked up by Melbourne. James Frawley from Ballarat at number 12.

Was a massive surprise, as he wasn't expected to get picked until about number 50 or so! I haven't seen him play before, but apparently a really good defender... Can't kick for shit though from what I hear :fight Great kid though.

With the competition's best midfield and with Michael Gardiner (St. Kilda), Andrew McDougall (Western Bulldogs), Travis Gaspar (Delisted) and Brad Smith (Delisted) all departing, it's no surprise the Eagles went tall. VERY tall:

16. Mitchell Brown (Nth Ballarat U18)
29. Eric McKenzie (Claremont)
43. Tim Houlihan (Nth Ballarat U18)
50. Will Schofield (Geelong U18)
80. James Thompson (Claremont)

Apparently McKenzie at 29 is a steal, but Brown at 16 is a bit high, so switch them around and you have their "true" value. Somebody must have been interested in Brown so we swooped early.
ruslah wrote:My girlfriends brother got picked up by Melbourne. James Frawley from Ballarat at number 12.
The AFL website predicted earlier this week that Frawley would be picked up by the Eagles with pick 16. So much for that!

EDIT: The Kangaroos picked up Aaron Edwards with pick 82. I'm so glad he has a second chance, I'm still annoyed we delisted him at the end of last year (instead of Gardiner).

Looks like Cousins found a bottle of bourbon under the leaf.

You would think that missing out on being a Premiership Captain would have been enough of a wake up call.

But hey, at least he wasn't driving home this time.

Just heard this during the cricket:
Former West Coast Eagles skipper Ben Cousins is in trouble again after the 2006 AFL Premiership player was arrested for being drunk.

The 2005 Brownlow Medallist was arrested on Melbourne's Southbank near the Crown Casino early this morning, was charged with being intoxicated in a public place and spent four hours in a police lock-up while he sobered up.

And he was in the company of a certain ex-WCE player at the time. Perhaps they were attempting to snort the white lines off the roads near Crown?

The Eagles rookie selections:

Pick 16 - Jamie McNamara
Pick 31 - Llane Spaanderman
Pick 45 - Chad Jones
Pick 56 - Ben Sharp
Pick 60 - Ashley Thornton
Pick 64 - Beau Wilkes

The last three picks (Sharp, Thornton and Wilkes) were on our rookie list already but we had to re-draft them because they've been on the list for two years. Chad Jones (pick 45) from the Kangaroos is the brother of premiership defender Brett, and Llane Spaanderman is a former Brisbane player who nobody seems happy we drafted. Our first pick (McNamara) is a midfielder who racks up possessions like crazy: in the Colts he apparently picked up 55 in a single game.

Sam Butler did that a few times in state games a couple of years back.. It was unbelievable. Also, when he played juniors for the club I played for (I was seniors at the time), he kicked 33 goals in his first three games of football ever.

I was bored so went back and looked over some emails to Woosha published on the Eagles website. This one was from 2004:
Justin Diggins wrote:Hi John, I've been an avid West Coast Eagles supporter since the team's inception. I was only a young fella when West Coast won their first and second premierships and noticed how that time was characterised by not only a great team but a great full forward in Peter Sumich. I always felt that even if Suma didn't take the mark he was ably supported by the small forwards like Tony Evans who could crumb and score. Since this time I've noticed that almost every top four team and premiership team has a designated tall full-forward. Take the top four now and we've got Gehrig, Neitz, Lynch (and Bradshaw) and Tredrea. Even though Phillip Matera is an outstanding forward for his size and always seems to be at the right place at the right time my question is: Do you believe West Coast can win a premiership without a designated tall forward? And if not, who do you see taking that role in the future?
John Worsfold wrote:Justin, you’re on the mark. History shows that dominant forwards are needed to win premierships. Peter Sumich was a terrific full-forward for this club and his influence, particularly in finals, was enormous. We are confident of filling that full-forward position with one of our young tall players who will grow in that role as we look to seasons ahead. Andrew McDougall is developing well and has played strongly in the last months. Ash Hansen has also put up his hand and delivered, kicking four goals against Adelaide in just his second game. Once Travis Gaspar and Paul Johnson return from injury they too will push for their opportunities. Phil Matera can only benefit from the presence of a quality key forward.

I'll break it down if you don't understand why I'm laughing:
John Worsfold wrote:Andrew McDougall is developing well and has played strongly in the last months.
Traded to the Western Bulldogs at the end of this year after playing one game for the season. Woosha: -1.
John Worsfold wrote:Ash Hansen has also put up his hand and delivered, kicking four goals against Adelaide in just his second game.
He also delivered on Grand Final day with two first quarter goals. Woosha: 0

Delisted at the end of this year because he never did recover from injury. Woosha: -1

Traded to Melbourne at the end of the 2004 season after playing only one game. Woosha: -2
John Worsfold wrote:Phil Matera can only benefit from the presence of a quality key forward.
Too bad he retired before the start of the 2006 season. Woosha: -3

And the worst aspect of Woosha's reply? He failed to mention Quinten "It's Fucking Fantastic" Lynch - the man who kicked more goals than any other during the 2006 finals series. Woosha: -4

So once again it's Cox against Doyle - ball spills free. Back of the pack is Cousins. Cleverly done. Ben Cousins has a bounce, backs himself. Handballs to Fletcher. Eagles maintaining possession. Kerr goes into the middle. HERE'S THE MOMENT FOR THE SWANS - Leo Barry's in there. No one taking a backwards step - LYNCH - just manages <oh!!!> to get boot to ball! Waters keeps it alive - Waters is dog-tired - now O'Keefe - the ball comes back to Waters - now picked up by Fosdike. Fosdike's got to get it moving quickly, kicks to the 50 - Dempster's there, can't take the mark, Glass will see it over - throw in! <woah!!!>

There can't be long. There CANNOT be long to go. <what an unbelievable match> The West Coast Eagles lead by a point. Can the Swans do it? SIREN!!!!! WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THE SEQUEL WOULD BE JUST AS GOOD AS THE ORIGINAL???

THE WEST COAST EAGLES ARE THE PREMIERS FOR 2006!!! And the stars - Cousins and Chris Judd - now have the medal they REALLY want to put around their neck!

Twelve years of disapointment over for West Coast. They have won their THIRD premiership in history and this time the heartbreak is suffered by the Sydney Swans!

:D
