Recommended ISPs? New connection required

Post by t0mby »

Tried to do a search, thread results were a few years old so asking here.

My partner has just moved to the GC ahead of me and asked to help try and sort out a decent pricing/connection plan. I was looking at Naked ADSL2+ on an unlimited plan through TPG but they require a phoneline connection first and then it is disconnected after Naked is installed (They said to contact Telstra, get a phoneline then cancel it after Naked is set up :? ). The house has a copper line but it is not currently connected so I can't even provide a number.

What are the options? Get an Internet + Phoneline bundle? Does anyone do a Naked plan that doesn't require the phoneline connection prior to ordering?

Which provider (not Telstra) has best value for money and reliability?

I'm with TPG. $60 a month. Unlimited Naked ADSL2+ with phone (pay for calls). It's good because I don't need a separate phone account and but I still can use the landline if I really need to. Otherwise it's essentially no cost. Didn't need an active phone line to set it up either.

Thanks Mavy. I read the website and it says you need an active line to set up naked but when I rang to query it I was told I didn't. So I went to sign up online and the first question was "What's your current number?", so I rang them back and got a different person that said I did need an active line and if I don't have one "ring Telstra for a line connection then cancel it after TPG sets up the connection".

Might take the unlimited data and phoneline for $70 then from TPG.

They're not the fastest but they are decently priced and I had a fairly stable connection with them.

I had found HD content start to buffer towards the end though...

1080p streaming Grey? My Canadian imports aren't even 720p so doesn't bother me too much. Cost is the main factor. And data cap. Unlimited for $60 is sweet.

Yeah I'm on TPG, speeds are decent enough, you should be fine. I wouldn't even bother with naked.

Yeah 1080p. On the whole though they were fine for a bit of gaming, YouTube after a few mins of loading and leeching the crap out of things.

wow, I just spent three hours* applying for TPG, only to get an email at the end of it that says they can't provide ADSL at my new address. Too bad, so sad etc.

I hate them already.

Annnnnnnd denied. Apparently ADLS2+ can't be installed because the house is in a complex and all the copper lines are bundled or something. Fucked if I know.

Back to the drawing board.

Update: Ended up going with Belong (A subsidiary of Telstra) and everything was sweet, good plan (Only 6 month lock in, free router and set up yadda yadda) but we had to move house back on the 11th Sept and Belong couldn't supply a connection to our new address to due lack of ports.

So we have gone with TPG, $59.95 for ADSL2+ & Home Phone and free router (with 24 month plan). Router arrived today so we connected up and man, talk about slooooooooow. Dunno wtf is up with this speed but last test on speedtest netted me a whopping 0.19mb download speed.

Grey, Mavy, have you had any poor quality connection problems with them at all?

I just moved out and I had TPG, had horrendous speeds for the last couple of months. I had figured it was due to a shit line. Plug in a phone and check if the line sounds clear. I didn't bother trying to get something done because I was leaving.

Edit: Should add I have had decent speeds in the past, and friends who currently have decent speeds.

Just got off the phone with them (ooer!) and they reckon there has been a short in the line recently so they're getting a technician to suss it out tomorrow whether it's on their end or at our house.

If they find it's on your end will they give you a new house in a better location? Wouldn't hurt to ask.

I've very rarely had a problem with TPG. Only a few issues which actually turned out to be the phone cable from the modem to the wall and for some reason the building's intercom system was interfering with the connection speed. Otherwise rock solid.

Try all the phone ports you have. Different cable. Make sure nothing else is plugged in to the line. Just rules a few things out then.

We got two jacks, one is modern but I.think may be on a separate line as there was no adsl. The other is one of those old school three pin jacks so we have an adaptor plugged in for the phone lead. This could be the problem and if so I'll just wire up a more modern jack in its place. The lead is the same one I used with my Belong connection so can't be that.

Time will tell tomorrow, just hope I don't have to call a technician out to solve it if it's on our end.
