Re: Game of Drones [FPV Racing]

I've ordered the fpv gear - goggles, flight cam, video transmitter, video receiver, antennae. The goggles are on a lengthy back order so now I wait.

Not much else I can do except practice flying LOS. I'm terrible at it! I had my first crash (yes it's on video), quite a soft catch into the branches of a gum tree. Some minor damage that just required replacing some wire mesh. I added lights while I was at it...

This is a more worthy pursuit than video game VR IMO.

This place is insane. Tons of cheap gear (mostly chinese) and free to almost-free shipping to Australia. I've got 6 orders on the go already *whistles*.. don't judge me.

Are some of those replacement parts for the Cup Day Disaster of 2015?

You know, I think I actually have 3 UMX Beasts. It's pretty stupid. One really should have a set up on it. Alright, I'll get onto it.

Well I reckon I'll have to get myself a micro plane too, and throw on a camera. The Camera/vTx unit is $111 AUD on its own. UMX Beast is $170. I have a spare FrSky receiver that I can swap into it. So $281 plus goggles, which are already in the mail. Maybe that'll be my xmas present >_>

I can't find the third one but I think it's somewhere stripped down for parts. I have an original UMX Beast and the one in that link which is the AS3X version. Personally I preferred the original because it handles exactly as you input..the AS3X versions came in later across the Spektrum range. You probably wouldn't notice the difference if you'd never flown the original. I don't fly it simply because the AS3X version is replaceable. There's quite a a few other planes in the UMX series that might appeal to you more than the Beast. It was pretty much the first UMX in that range...the the Sbach which seems to be discontinues. Mine was destroyed on the third flight...

there were only 2 or 3 in the range when I stopped flying. Now they have an F16, Habu, Pitts but I still think the Beast looks the best of the lot. It's a beautiful plane.

The Pitts looks pretty good...slightly more powerful motor too.

These bad boys came in the mail today! Everything I need to make my quad FPV!

Spent the night wiring it all up and turned it on.... and nothing.

Got a bit anxious but eventually discovered some dip switches on the vRX to set to raceband to match the vTX and voila! Good video feed complete with working HUD. Fuck yes!

I've got more bits and bobs coming this week to clean up the build so I'll take pics then.

I had my first FPV experience over the weekend (as did Cletus!). Oh man is it a thrill!

First battery I flew was on an oval on Saturday. Pretty basic flying up and down a cricket pitch. It really is an 'out of body' experience. For 5 minutes or so I was flying around the oval completely immersed and totally forgetting that I'm actually sitting on a nearby park bench. Sure, the quality is pretty low on these things but it's enough to give me a real rush.

The next day I went with Cletus to a park recommended by other FPV pilots in Melbourne. I had a blast zooming around trees and through gaps and even threw in a few flips and rolls :D Found a couple of other people flying drones there too and ended up flying with them for a while. Finished the day without so much as a broken prop. I'm gone. Completely hooked now.

Massive thumbs up. Definitely going to set up FPV for my micros and UMX. Elevates the RC hobby to a whole new level.

Wired up to battery and glued on.

Took it for a spin around the house. Pretty weird being able to navigate around other rooms out of sight. Got new batteries delivered today too \o/
Will post footage in the next couple of days.
