Re: Coronavirus thread
WFH for me starts from Monday now. There's a dude in my team younger than me that doesn't even have a computer but has to WFH. Dealing with his technical ineptitude is tiresome at the best of times. Then there's a 48yo woman who is upset that she has to come into the office to work because she still lives at home with her parents. Not because they need caring for, but because she never moved out of home, ffs. But she can't WFH because she has a computer from the dawn of time (2007, I think), and it's far too slow to cope with the remote desktop requirements. Work won't give her a laptop, because executive management took them all for themselves! So she's getting all grumpy about having to come in to work, meanwhile I'm the only grunt in the team that saw the writing on the wall three weeks ago and got all ready and set up... and it's looking like I'll be asked to come in to the office since we need people there to answer the phones. And of course the business phone system is ancient, and calls can't be rerouted to remote VoIP locations...
I'll tell you what; without being all conspiracy theorist about it, this situation is ripe for a bit of the old cyberwarfare. All it will take is be a bit of social engineering to gain easy access to the energy grid and financial system.

On the other hand, my building also has an employee-only cafe on the ground floor which is a separate business. Things are looking pretty grim for the foreseeable future, so The Company has stepped up and told the cafe owner that they'll cover wage costs for his employees for the duration. Fuck yes.

Re: Coronavirus thread
We were all told to make sure we can log in from home earlier this week, but no word yet on when we have to. A few do it once a week, I won't until I have to. Don't like WFH.
I work in state government, and some departments (like mine) are far better set up for WFH than others. But the rumours are that those other departments are madly scrambling around to get ready so that the government can make a government-wide announcement at the same time.
My old job in the Commonwealth was even further along the WFH route, a lot of my old colleagues are just doing it without an official word from on high.
It's in the community transmission stage in WA now.

Re: Coronavirus thread
We got told to all start working from home from the start of the week (I work in an insurance company in the tech area, so we’re all about risks and mitigations). Fortunately the company is very well set up for WFH and I’ve been doing a bit of it this year, so I haven’t skipped a beat in terms of being able to do my job.
Having my routine go to shit and struggling to get in work mode because of it, that’s a different thing altogether.

Re: Coronavirus thread
As a seasoned wfh'er, it's very easy to fall into a laziness trap and not eat properly, be active enough or even practice proper hygiene - especially when work gets busy. For some reason it's much harder to say "fuck it, I need a break/coffee" like when at the office, and instead sit in front of the laptop all day and next thing you know it's 2pm and you haven't even eaten anything or had a shower and feel like complete shit.
All the tips you read online such as have a routine, go for walks, stick to your regular break times etc etc are true, and they do wonders. Not that we want to go out much at the moment, but I would even have lunch out occasionally, get a coffee from the local cafe etc, just to get away from what is now the workplace.
And stay away from YouTube/pornhub

I don't know whether to post this in a music thread or here. Whatever - a happy uplifting ditty about dying from influenza to make us all feel better.

Re: Coronavirus thread
Time for a minirant!
So with all of this hullabaloo about social isolation and flattening the curve and the requirements of 4sqm per person in an indoor gathering, he fucking logs off early to go to a bachelor party. Sure, he's had that booked in for weeks, but times change, buddy! Then he's going to a wedding of 120+ people on the weekend. A wedding full of cheek-kissing italians.
I mean, I get that people think this is a bit overblown and all, but jesus fucking christ. There's people younger than me with no underlying health issues in hospital in critical condition. Regardless of whether you think it's overblown, the social distancing measures are the only way to flatten the curve. And even if you think it'll all be OK, think about your goddamn wife you selfish prick!
This dude has been required to WFH because his wife has a thoroughly compromised immune system thanks to having been treated for cancer recently. My workplace is fully supportive of this, and so is his wife's. They both get to WFH as a happy little couple.unfnknblvbl wrote:There's a dude in my team younger than me that doesn't even have a computer but has to WFH. I'm front line so business as usual. Been told to do as much as possible from the desk but otherwise there are still too many idiots out there that can't manage their shit.

Well looks like we're locked down properly now.
Interstate travel banned, footy (finally) banned, talk in WA of turning Rottnest Island into a quarantine zone
This is pretty surreal.

Mate of mine from Tassie is taking his family of five (including one immunocompromised kid) around the country in a caravan. Turns out the worst time to leave Tasmania was six weeks ago...

Re: Coronavirus thread
Apparently California is in lockdown too, 40 million told to stay home, drones flying around with loudspeakers telling people to stay inside. It's starting to sound like an Orwellian future.
And for those interested folding@home is available. https://foldingathome.org/2020/02/27/fo ... 2019-ncov/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I've been told to brace for a big internal announcement tomorrow that won't affect me. Not sure what to make of that...

Re: Coronavirus thread
NZ going into total lockdown as of midnight Wed. We've moved from Level 2 to Level 3 today, we'll stay at level 3 for 48 hours then the highest level, 4. Only supermarkets hospitals and pharmacies will stay open and the staff required to keep those going such as logistics, limited public transport only for those workers that need it. Shits getting real and I'm thankful I'm one of those that will be required to work through while my partner stays home with the kids.

Yeah, same. We're looking at maybe doing two-week rotations since our phone system can't be remapped. Gotta keep the power on, although I'm not sure wtf will happen if we go into full shutdown, since my department isn't exactly vital.t0mby wrote:Shits getting real and I'm thankful I'm one of those that will be required to work through
Day one of WFH and nothing exploded. Citrix though, fuck Citrix. I tried to take a screenshot, and it crashed so hard that it took the rest of my system down with it. There were no big internal announcements made at all, so I'm guessing that something might happen after 5 like the rest have been so far.
