I remember being annoyed that PS2 covers weren't the same size as PS1 games. I got over it.

anyway, just watched clerks 2.
image is super sharp as expected, can see skin poures and stubble clearly... but you lose that as soon as there's movement thanks to the framerate.
I said the same thing when blu-ray was set up at JB, it doesn't look THAT next gen with such a crappy framerate, and I think that'll really hold the movies back for a LONG time.

also, maybe it's just clerks 2 (I have 4 more movies coming in the next few days) but the picture was very grainy.

overall i'm impressed, but it's far from perfect.
movies can't stay at 25fps (is that right?) forever, games make movies look bad in that area.

jis you need to check out something called Digital Natural Motion from philips. It was technology that interpolated extra frames into video so that it effectively took 30fps content and made it 60fps. Most of the time it worked pretty well.

From what i understand the reason films are still shot at 24fps is due to exposure times of the film stock used. Higher framerate film is very expensive and requires lots of very controlled lighting to work well.

Although with the movement into full digital capture for movies, there are hd cams and technology out there that could capture at 60fps. 60fps capture video does look very lifelike and "nextgen".

Oh and all hd movies are 24fps encoded/60hz playback. There is no such thing as 50hz/25fps movies in hd like there was with pal. So it could be why you are noticing a little bit more judder than you're used to, 1 less fps and 3:2 pull up in effect.

i'm not sure if the framerate is any different to what i'm used to (apart from gaming), I just feel these new formats don't really feel "next gen" because of it.

still images look supurb, but as soon as there's movement you lose a lot of that... there may be reasons why tframerates have stayed the same but I honestly feel any new tech will be severely held back 'till it changes.

ok take gaming for example, show a non gamer a 60fps racing game and they are impressed, I had the same reaction when I saw daytona and other smooth games in arcades.
imaging that with movies, DVD would be history, people would really want this new tech but as it is I really don't think it's enough.

HD movies won't get anywhere 'till we see dirt cheap players on the market, I don't think it will fail because the res increase is needed in this day of HD TVs, but it will be a long time before the masses move on imo.

I'm not sure about 60fps video.. the vids from my camera at that speed look a bit "odd".

Some people like the slower framerate because it feels more "cinema like" to them.

I'm hesitant to listen to you about anything home theatre related after your little freakout over the borders the first time you watched a DVD

I don't get how anyone could prefer a slower framerate, but some people prefer vynal over CDs.

I admit I have never seen 60fps video, but I think it'd look sensational.

I liked what I saw a lot, aside from the fact that the movie is fucking awesome.

it isn't a bad movie or anything but it's not very funny, I was a bit bored through much of it, and the end was just strange.

also i wasn't expecting a great transfer for such an old movie but it wasn't consistant, most of it looked pretty good but some scenes were of a much lower quality.
I thought it was odd when the bandits were lining up and they called the KKK dudes over, then the picture turned to shit for a while before coming good again... it was the same scene!

anyway... you kansas city faggots over hyped this one!

Its purely for aesthetic reasons. 24p has a look to it that cannot be recreated. It's become so embedded into our psyche that it becomes almost impossible to change.

There's very much 1080/50i and 1080/50p modes for both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Blu-ray has 24p native content no matter what region. The player simply spits out a 3:2 pulldown version (which may be frame doubled for 60p) in realtime for 60Hz and it either speeds up the video 4% or spits out a realtime 2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:3 pulldown (again, frame doubled for 50p) for 50Hz output.

HD-DVD? Read the freaking specs. Section 5.2. HD-DVD has 50Hz and 60Hz primary encodings. 60Hz operate with a 24p stream which has 3:2 pulldown timings in the stream to tell the player which frames/fields need to be repeated. To output 24p you just ignore the repeated frames. 50Hz primary encodings do exactly the same thing except they operate off a 25p source which has already been converted by the studio and they just directly frame double the 25p source rather than running any sort of pulldown.

FYI, this also means that 50Hz HD-DVDs are fucked from the start if you want unmolestered 24p from end-to-end. They're either going to be running faster or with pulldown jitter.

The only way you're going to get unmolestered 24p running at the proper speed is either a Blu-Ray or 60Hz HD-DVD title running to a 24p display. Anything else and you're introducing a frame rate change at some point which is either going to introduce jitter or change the speed.

This is why I haven't bought a HDTV yet. I know jitter and shit is just going to piss me off so I'm waiting for *the* perfect TV. I'm only on 42K. I can't afford to upgrade my TV over and over. I can barely afford to upgrade my TV now.

about $83-$84 for 11 50 min eps (before post)

planet earth arrived today.

most scenes look phenomenal, others look ordinary (grain and some pixelation in plain backgrounds (sky).

watching a great white jump 4 feet out of the water to snatch a seal in super slow-mo and high def is VERY satisfying.

I ordered the Matrix Complete Collection on HD-DVD this morning.

Wasn't going to, as i already have all the movies. But shit. I couldn't help myself. These are the first movies i have doubled up on though. It's around $80AUS for them, which isn't bad.

I canceled my matrix ultimate collection order because the extras are region1 nstc. I'll wait for a local release or pick them up on bluray when they get released, the bluray version should have the DVD extras on a single side due to the extra 20gb of space per disc.

I've ordered the 2 pirates bluray flicks, they're confirmed region free.

My ultimate collection arrived today for the hd player, looks absolutely stunning. The other two discs are region coded but i'll just use my normal multi region dvd player to watch them. With the uptake of hd dvd's in this country you will be waiting months to get them in pal.

Pirates of the Caribbean is going to be the one to get me onto the PS3 + Blu-Ray + 1080p bandwagon...

For this transfer Disney went with 50GB Blu-ray disc (BD50) and glorious AVC transfer in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio and the average bit rate ranges from 35 to 38 Mbps. In short ladies and gentleman this Pirates movie gives us the new benchmark in picture quality for HD optical. Up until this point, both Crank on Blu-ray and King Kong on HD DVD were the films to beat in HD optical picture quality. I was fortunate enough to watch the new Matrix Collection HD DVD box set yesterday, and not even it rivals this Curse of the Black Pearl disc. At no point in viewing Pirates did I experience any macro blocking or any noise of any type. I could not believe this considering the amount of both bright and dark scenes and also the amount action sequences. Also the film was extremely sharp and clear and free of any film debris and I mean zero debris whatsoever. I have not experienced this as of yet on HD optical until the viewing of this disc. This disc also contained little to no film grain. Colors (and this is a very colorful film) were extremely vibrant and flesh tones were spot-on. This disc is truly an AMAZING benchmark in picture quality.

Fuck. Yes.

I saw the third movie tonight and this is going to kick the shit.

Cars as well. Can't fucking wait for Cars on Blu-Ray.

The original Pirates looked good enough on Seven HD the other day running 1080i @ 10.5Mbps. I can't imagine how good it will look at those bitrates. Now for them to start doing this as the norm and I will be going Blu-Ray in a flash (well, after the heart attach at the price).
